The Netherlands - Indonesia: A Hybrid of Cultures ?
The editor's introductory remarks state that the aim of this bilingual publication (Dutch- Indonesian) is to trace the influence of the past Dutch endeavour upon the present work of younger generations. The book presents a collection of twenty-nine articles and interviews expressing both concern and expectations, as well as reflecting on the current scenes in terms of cultural transfer of language and literature; music, dance and theatre; photo- graphy and film; fine art; design and applied arts; architecture; and last but not least, trade and (government) administration. By Siswa Santoso
Political scientist at the University of Amsterdam The general mood of the writing is very positive and the atmosphere is a mixture of personal, political, critical, and cosmopolitan elements, with nationalist and sometimes colonial sentiments thrown in too.
One important aspect of this work is the interviewee's or writer's strident voice indicating an intermingling of professional and national interests being inserted into family and personal backgrounds. This is not surprising since one prominent sponsor for the joint endeavour was W. Deetman, the former Minister of Education and Sciences, now chairman of the Dutch Parliament. He stated that the government wishes to emphasize the personal and individual dimension in educational and cultural cooperation (p. 16/17). Hence we find in this book three ethnological museum curators who expect the younger generation of Indonesians in Indonesia to undertake a systematic study of Dutch and other West European archaeological and ethnological museum collections.

ADVENTURES IN SOCIAL ARCHITECTURE
CIVILIZATION AS A FINE ART We live in extraordinary times. The greatest tool-makers in history have just delivered us a fertile planetary infrastructure that nourishes our world with communications, energy, tools, and food of all kinds. It's now time to build another layer of evolution upon that rich and connected foundation. It's time to ask ....why did we put that gorgeous warm dancing fire in a box in the basement? Why don't we sing together anymore? Where are the story-tellers? What happened to dancing in groups? Where did the rocking chairs and hammocks go? Where are our town centers with park benches? How come all the older folks fade into oblivion? Where are the rituals to pass into manhood? Is marriage the only way to formally couple? The infrastructure we built around the planet is great....but its not the solution to quality living. We don't need to limit our future world by just growing up to be a global economy, or a new web of technology, or worse, another bigger more pervasive government. These are really important foundations to build on. But, we should aim higher. What we really need is to build a new civilization. That won't mean we will stop being at the business of building a functioning world that "works". That will continue. Now, however, we can aim together at a world that ennobles the grand state of life that's possible on planet earth.

About Mexico
To see a Mexico Map, click here Mexico is an ideal place for those interested in archaeology. In the land known as Mesoamerica, major cultures developed over three thousand years ago. The main archaeological sites in the high tableland include Cuicuilco, Teotihuacan. Tula and the Great Temple. Outstanding sites in the Oaxaca region include Monte Albán, Mitla and Lambityeco. For those wishing to find out more about the Mayan world, visiting Chichén Itza and Uzmal in the Yucatán and Palenque and Bonampak in Chiapas is a must. On the Gulf Coast, El Tajín and the La Venta Museum Park are well worth exploring. In the west of Mexico, visiting the Purépecha ceremonial stone structures is a rewarding experience. Finally, the city of Paquimé in Chihuahua is a fascinating example of the cultures in northern Mexico. Architecture occupies a significant position in the history of mankind. In Mexico, as in other countries, architecture is a reflection of its past. Thus, visitors will obtain a fascinating historical overview of the country through its pre-Hispanic temples and cities, colonial churches and monasteries, palaces and a wide range of civil and hydraulic architecture, in styles ranging from medieval and gothic through renaissance to mudéjar and baroque. Art nouveau, neo-Mexican, neoclassical and art deco were established between the 19th and early 20th centuries, leaving an indelible mark on many cities. Other styles that began in the 20th century eventually evolved into the restrained works of contemporary architecture. Here you will be able to see them first-hand, trace their development in time and discover a new world that is eclectic in each era and as a whole.

Posted by Rog the Dodge on February 16, 2003 at 17:38:44: I'm feeling my way round the early stages of an article which will examine the cultural role of churches in architectural achievement and in their contribution to the development of places of contemplation and worship in an increasingly secular Western world. It is based on my observation that the church, as a cultural contributor, has been largely absent in the UK (with exception of Coventry Cathedral and Christ the King, Liverpool) since WW2. I would be interested for views on this and also views from other countries by way of comparison. I am specific about churches as it seems to me that mosques and temples within their cultures do not suffer the kind of cultural crisis that I am implying for the church. Although, I stand to be corrected. I should say that I am not religious and my interest is purely cultural, but don't let that put you off.

Nature versus tradition
Eliel Saarinen: Railway Station, Helsinki, 1905-1919. F innish architecture means, almost without exception, modern architecture, or at least the built environment as it has been realised over the last 100 years. It could hardly be otherwise, for the building stock as a whole is young; less than 13% of it dates back to before 1920. There are scarcely any architectural drawings to be found from before the 19th century and even in the early 19th century very few of them were actually made. One cannot, therefore, speak of an actual academic tradition, at least not in the same sense as in the countries closer to Central Europe. I n the absence of a strong academic tradition, however, the weightiness of such a tradition has not been present to restrict the absorption of new influences. From very early on, there has been an open-minded attitude to the making of architecture; the ideal of a modern, dynamic nation was to be expressed through the formal language of new public buildings. When architectural training began at the end of the 19th century, women were able to take part at once. Indeed, the Finn Signe Hornborg was one of the first trained women architects in the whole world - so far, an earlier example has only been found in the United States - and

  • Dwelling culture as a part of common culture is only a framework for scientific research, a method to analyze the elements that compile it, a useful and successful method to study identity of housing architecture. 1.2 Globalization and internationalization Time we live in is not so simple as it was in the past. The World shows strong interest in approach to the process of globalization and internationalization. Cybernetic society, as a result of world s trends and efforts, is going to wipe out the borders between countries, nationalities, cultures and identities. The pessimistic scenario offers that there will not be any nationality, national architecture, national culture and national identity. The optimistic solution is that it is not reasonable and popular to believe that it is going to happen very soon. Are we prepared to become member of international society? The answer is much more complicated as we are prepared to admit.

Why a Reality Tour to Iran? Did you know that more than half of Iran's university students are women? That Iranian films are considered among the best in the world? Or that despite censorship, critical analysis of government policy flourishes in public debates? Since the 1979 Revolution and overthrow of the US-backed Shah, Iran has largely been out of reach for US travelers. In recent years, travel restrictions have been eased, yet few Americans visit Iran and explore the country's rich cultural and historic legacy. Contrary to popular Western perception, the vast majority of Iranians are eager to rebuild relations with the United States and are extremely hospitable to Americans. The name-calling by President Bush of Iran as an "axis of evil" undermines the very progress and reform that Iranians have been struggling to achieve. In this time of increased political tension between the US and Iran, American travel to this misunderstood country helps establish the people-to-people ties that facilitate understanding and respect between the countries. Join Global Exchange's Reality Tour to Iran and: Learn about Iran's vibrant reform movement, women's advances and struggles under the Revolutionary government and the work of non-governmental organizations.
