International Information Architecture
July 14, 2003 Comments (13) Subscribe Connecting people from diverse disciplines, countries and cultures is a strategic imperative, not only for AIfIA but for the information architecture community as a whole. Our competitive advantage derives from our very ability to build bridges and span networks. This argument alone should provide ample incentive for us to nurture an international perspective within the practice, but there are all sorts of idiosyncratic reasons why information architects should reach across borders.
Women, Fire, and Dangerous Things
George Lakoff's book about categorization is required reading for any serious information architect. Consider this excerpt: The title of this book was inspired by the Australian aboriginal language Dyirbal, which has a category, balan , that actually includes women, fire, and dangerous things. It also includes birds that are not dangerous, as well as exceptional animals, such as the platypus, bandicoot, and echidna. The ways we categorize are rooted in language and culture. This creates unique challenges for information architects. For example, a web site targeted for a Japanese audience may require a completely different structure and organization than its German equivalent. Localization isn't limited to translation.

The concepts- of house and home transcend geographical areas, cultural norms, linguistic connotations, religious doctrines and temporal boundaries: They are fundamental human concepts which are grounded in sets of relationships that order and define the status of individuals in relation to society at large. Historical research of interpretations of home plus recent demographic trends and technological innovations indicate that the multidimensional nature of home ought to be examined in precise contexts using integrative and historical research methads. This subject is complex and it warrants long-term commitment.

Lack of respect for the architectural profession shown by both public and private building patrons and their interference in the implementation of projects are among chronic difficulties that have remained as rampant today as yesterday. Other problems have also persisted, such as expecting consulting engineers to carry out large-scale projects without an initial plan, the inability to evaluate the artistic quality of projects, nitpicking over trivial matters while ignoring fundamental faults when judging the projects, the designers' and builder dislike of constructive criticism, lack of productive cooperation between designers and consultants, absence of healthy competition and the prevalence of deceitful practices in competing with others. Recently, a new issue has been added to these and that is the resistance of building patrons toward the construction of an edifice that is of a bold and outstanding artistic design.

  • Are you cultured? Global web design and the dimensions of culture
When a company decides to globalise its site, the web team often learns the taboo colors and appropriate dress codes of a given culture, translates the text, and launches. But cultural differences run deeper than visual appearance or language; they reflect strong values. Rarely do globalised sites incorporate the nuances of a culture's social hierarchy, individualism, gender roles, time-orientation, or truth-seeking attributes. Building worldwide websites
Playing in the global economy means preparing websites that speak to customers and communities all over the world. Find out ways to convert your websites to reach other cultures effectively, starting with language translation. But don't just translatelocalise your site. With ten tips for localising without tears. Conducting international usability
As business on the web matures, organisations increasingly pay attention to the first two Ws in WWWWorld Wide. Companies with international sales offices crave a distinct web presence in each locale to demonstrate seriousness in that local market. Multi-national companies often use intranets to unify global teams. Maintaining global consistency requires centralising these web efforts (usually within corporate headquarters), yet this must accommodate distinct approaches to working which vary from region to region. User testing is a valuable tool in such situations, but how does one conduct user tests internationally?
