Workstage Patterson Building Wins 2004 AIA Honor Award
The Workstage Patterson Building (referred to as Steelcase Project MAC) has received the distinguished 2004 AIA Honor Award, an award given to only 16 buildings throughout the world. The Patterson Building was built as the prototype for Workstage. It serves as the headquarters for the Workstage team and a swing-space for Steelcase Inc. "This project shows that it is possible to design a beautiful and elegant speculative office building on a modest budget," the jury concluded. "As a modular and prototypical building, it is designed to be repeated, adapted, or expanded on other sites."

Integrated Building Systems: Productivity and Building Science

T he Public Interest Energy Research (PIER) program conducts public interest energy research that seeks to improve the quality of life for California's citizens by providing environmentally sound, safe, reliable and affordable energy services and products. T he Institute received one of three research contracts in PIER's Residential and Commercial Buildings area. The Institute's program, called Integrated Energy Systems - Productivity and Buildings Science Program, is a three-year project with a $6 million budget. The program is funded through California's System Benefit Charges and administered by the California Energy Commission (CEC). Donald J. Aumann is the CEC Programmatic Contact. T he Institute's PIER project is organized into six research areas. One of these areas-Residential and Commercial Buildings-develops and demonstrates technologies that are not adequately addressed by competitive and regulated markets and that can make California's buildings healthier, more energy efficient, and more affordable.
