PROJECTS Living Architecture is committed to an architecture that fully nurtures the complete human being...body, mind, and spirit by working with the laws of nature. We have been practicing environmental and healthy architecture for over 25 years, and are nationally recognized experts in healthy design and construction with projects across the country.
We are architects and consultants capable of creating healthy buildings of all types...residential, educational, commercial, governmental, and industrial. Our experience has proven that building for health and environment is cost effective especially when life cycle and productivity costs are considered. Commercial / Institutional
A healthy workplace can increase productivity, reduce absenteeism, and lower employee turnover. For most companies, employee payroll and benefits are the largest expense. Increasing productivity in even a small way can have significant financial payback. Companies that have moved into healthy buildings have seen greater than 500% Return on Investment (R.O.I.) www.betterbricks.com

As a shadow appears it tunes any radio frequency between 150kHz to 1.5GHz based on its position monitored by a video tracking system. The size of the shadow controls the volume gain of the specific audio channel. We can have 16 frequencies tuned simultaneously and the resulting sound environment is a composition controlled by people's movements. This piece investigates the contested radio space in the context of the increased surveillance of the body as an antenna. The system tunes all sorts of signals including air traffic control, short wave radio, cell phones, police, taxi dispatch, pagers and more. With the assistance of Conroy Badger.

Lawrence Technological University
University Technology and Learning Complex
Southfield, Michigan The complex offers comprehensive facilities for learning in an electronic environment with fully wired classrooms, a virtual reality lab, an advanced graphic lab, a lighting lab, electrical engineering and computer labs, a photography studio, and
TV production and broadcasting studios with double-height ceilings. It also offers galleries and lecture rooms, an office of the future, a resource center with a 15,000-volume library, conference rooms and office spaces. The ground floor lobby announces the building's focus on technology with an information commons featuring computer stations available for campus information, group teaching and individual research. The four-story, 135,000-square-foot building extends between the one-story Architecture and Engineering Buildings, its length interrupted by a grand three-story portal that acts as the school's formal entrance and leads to the campus quadrangle. The initial analysis of the building site also resulted in a complete reconsideration of the campus plan. Formerly, the main road to the campus continued through the middle of the central campus quadrangle, impeding pedestrian flow among the main academic buildings.

Gates Hall projects a spirit of welcome openness By SHERI OLSON SEATTLE P-I ARCHITECTURE CRITIC If one of architecture's uses is to signal sea changes in institutions, then the University of Washington's new $80 million law school broadcasts a mea culpa. The old law school, bunkerlike Condon Hall, resembled the last bastion of an embattled male-dominated profession holed up behind narrow slots in the concrete sunscreens. In contrast, the new brick and glass William H. Gates Hall designed by Kohn Pederson Fox of New York (in collaboration with Mahlum Architects of Seattle) has wings that reach out, projecting a spirit of openness and inclusiveness. [ Note: Pederson was misspelled in the original version of this article.

Beyeler Foundation Museum Riehen (Basel), Switzerland Architect: Renzo Piano. Date completed: 1997 The Beyeler Museum has been acclaimed for the classical serenity of its design, but it is also an efficient green machine. Perforated metal panels and a translucent glass roof modulate light in the galleries. The panels also create a thermal buffer that reduces fluctuations in temperature. Source: New York Times April 16, 2000, Sunday Arts and Leisure; Art/Architecture; "Good Buildings, and Good for You", by Herbert Muschamp. Business Promotional Centre Duisburg, Germany Date completed: 1995 A stepping stone for high performance cladding systems using the principle of double skins and a ventilated cavity. The external planar facade protects very finely computer-controlled perforated aluminum blinds that still allow views out when closed. Behind them is a highly insulated double-glazed argon-filled facade for thermal comfort. The building's design concept was to try to create the best level of comfort under artificial conditions. Each room has individual controls in addition to computer controlled light and temperature sensors. Source: http://www.fosterandpartners.com/projects/0458.html

Herten, Germany Architect: LOG ID, Dieter Schempp Date completed: 1994 Size: 4,610 m This public building comprises two interconnected elements: a four-story public library, and a cultural center in the form of a glazed rotunda rising through four stories. The innovative architectural practice behind it specializes in exploiting the potential of passive solar energy and green vegetation. Solar collectors heat domestic hot water and air. The roof opens on hot days creating a thermal chimney to cool the space below. 100% natural ventilation, uses thermal mass and natural daylight. Author(s): Publisher: Birkhäuser ISBN: Format: softback Price: Review Date: May 23, 2000 Review: The basis for this oeuvre of Adolf Krischanitz, the freelance Viennese architect, is his 'double strategy': 'the programmatic dualism of theory and practice, the method of continuing dialogue between conception and reception, stringent realization and contemplative assimilation' ( Friedrich Achleitner). This well-illustrated book documents Krischanitz's furniture designs, exhibitions and interiors as well as his architecture. His buildings exhibit an affinity to the usual everyday processes and show his individual development of contemporary Minimalism.
