Glenn Murcutt: Buildings and Projects 1962-2003, Second Edition > Customer Review #1: Great documentation

I recently saw Murcutt lecture and regretted that the wonderful (and fully annotated) construction drawings he was showing us were not published and available for a closer look. Well, get out the magnifying glass, cause here they are! Unlike most architectural monographs, this one actually gives us some insight into how these designs were actualized...highly commendable. Murcutts work speaks for itself, but the format of this book would win with any architect...unless they dont want us looking too closely. Hmmm.

The Industrial Age B Baroque Urban Design Baroque thinking powerfully addressed the area of urban design. Michelangelo’s Campidoglio (Capitol, 1538-1564) in Rome had already provided a model for the public square, and villas such as Vignola’s Villa Farnese (begun 1539) in Caprarola showed how these important buildings could extend axial ties into the townscape. Baroque church facades frequently had more to do with their accompanying piazzas than with the church interiors. Often, whole new towns were built on formal principles. Early in the 18th century Peter the Great brought Italian and French baroque architects to Russia to create Saint Petersburg. In the New World were built such large urban centers as Mexico City; Santiago, Chile; Antigua Guatemala, Guatemala; Philadelphia; Savannah, Georgia; and Washington, D.C.

Michael Graves: Buildings and Projects 1990-1994 > Customer Review #1: Great visual compilation of Graves recent projects

I got this book as a fathers day present and I absolutely love it. It has great photography of each of the finished projects, gives a brief description of the project and interesting facts about each. There are also photos of some of Graves 3-d models for some concept buildings that never "made it to production", as well as a peppering of his wonderfully whimsical sketches. A must have for anyone interested in architecture or design, or anyone that has even a remote fascination into the beauty that is a Graves design.
Michael Graves: Buildings and Projects 1990-1994 > Customer Review #2: Graves 1990-1994 A wonderful addition to the library of any Graves fan. Beautifully photographed, with wonderfully descriptive texts.

Discussion Portland Building Commentary The Creator's Words "The Portland Building was a design-build competition sponsored by the city of Portland, Oregon. Located on a 200-foot square downtown block, the building will house the city's minicipal offices. This particular site offers a rich and special setting characterized by the adjacent City Hall and County Courthouse buildings on two sides, and the public transit mall and the park on the other two sides. "The design of the building addresses the public nature of both the urban context and the internal program. In order to reinforce the building's associative or mimetic qualities, the facades are organized in a classical three-part division of base, middle or body, and attic or head." "While any architectural language, to be built, will always exist within the technical realm, it is important to keep the technical expression parallel to an equal and complementary expression of ritual and symbol. It could be argued that the Modern Movement did this, that as well as its internal language, it expressed the symbol of the machine, and therefore practiced cultural symbolism. But in this case, the machine is retroactive, for the machine itself is a utility. So this symbol is not an external allusion, but rather a second, internalized reading. A significant architecture must incorporate both internal and external expressions. The external language, which engages inventions of culture at large, is rooted in a figurative, associational and anthropomorphic attitude."

Photo: © Gerald Zugmann The focal center of the current Zaha Hadid exhibition is the spatial experiment "Ice-Storm" developed specifically for the MAK.
At 300 square meters, eight tons and seven meters in height, this "landscaped interior" occupies the central exhibition hall. Visitors are drawn by the radical experience of space, offered by Hadid's unique architectural approach, into an exhibition which presents a comprehensive overview of the architect's oeuvre.
Photo: © Gerald Zugmann
Photo: © Gerald Zugmann The installation, "Ice Storm" is the result of new digital potential that takes advantage of design and production practices so as to make innovative interior architecture comprehensible. As a built manifesto, Hadid integrated a series of early furniture designs and installations within it. She takes all of this, forming it into a dynamic, flowing spatial collage. Areas of semi-abstract forms and half-functional additions indicate a new kind of latent, rather than manifest, environment. Photo: © Gerald Zugmann An essential element of the exhibition is the large number of mid-sized and large format paintings which have never been shown before and which the architect regards as the archive of her oeuvres.
