Barns (Norton/Library of Congress Visual Sourcebooks) > Customer Review #1: The Best Resource on Barns

I highly recommend this book for general readers and researchers interested in relationships between architecture and history. John Vlach has a comprehensive knowledge of architecture, and he insightfully writes about the importance of barns and rural cultural landscapes as resources for studying history. This new volume is an important resource for studies of rural folk culture as it provides studies of a great variety of barns and an array of approaches for learning about vernacular architecture.

Having just purchased an old barn, I found precious few resources to assist in gleaning a history. Visser's book was concise, informative, and a pleasure to read. It provides valuable insight to the development of agricultural styles, and valuable clues to dating the agrarian landscape. Excellent source.

    INTRODUCTION
Maps, site survey sheets, and photographs of vernacular architecture in Benton, Henry, Hickory and St. Clair counties. The images include barns, bridges, cabins, chicken coops, churches, corncribs, garages, granaries, houses, outhouses, post offices, root cellars, schools, sheds, silos, stores, wells, and windmills.
    DONOR INFORMATION
The Harry S. Truman Reservoir Architectural Survey Records were donated to the State Historical of Missouri by an unknown donor on 24 March 1980 (SHS Accession No. 2299). An addition to the records was made on 1 May 1980 by Curtis Synhorst (SHS Accession No. 2311).
    HISTORICAL SKETCH
The Harry S. Truman Cultural Resources Survey Project was undertaken to record the architecture in areas that were affected by the Harry S. Truman Reservoir. The area included Benton, Henry, Hickory , and St. Clair counties in southwest Missouri. Curtis Synhorst participated in the project which was headquartered in the Division of American Archaeology at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
    SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE
The Architectural Survey Records are organized into four sections. The maps and site survey sheets are arranged alphabetically by county name. The architectural check sheets, building plans, and contact prints are arranged alphabetically by town name. The architectural data cards and photographs are also arranged alphabetically by town name. Another section of photographs, the bulk of the collection, is arranged alphabetically by county name and then by type of building thereunder.

Luxembourg traditional architecture in the United States Some elements of Luxembourg traditional architecture Luxembourg traditional architecture is based on stone construction, a technique introduced by the Romans. Stone dominates the picture in every town and village in Luxembourg. Not only houses but barns, bake houses, smoke houses were constructed of stone. Gardens had no fences but stone walls, cemeterys had not wooden but stone crosses and monuments. Stone structures were coated in stucco and mortar in a variety of earth tones, whitewashing was a more common practice in the Norther part of Luxembourg. The layout plan of the main buildings is a stretched rectangle with the length of the building being generally 2 or 3 times their width. Typical rural Luxembourg architecture is exemplified by the "Quereinhaus", a combined house and barn , with house stable and barn in one lenghthy unit lying under one roof. The buildings were one and a half or two stories high. Above the second floor was the "Speicher" (from Latin: spicarium = grainery), used for storing grain and fruits. The floor of the "Speicher" was usually covered with a cement floor, more suitable for storing and supporting weight. It was rodent proof and provided protection in case of fire.
    Half hip
or jerking roofs were common, they were eaveless, which means that there was virtually no overhang where the roof met the walls. Although the original cover of the roof was straw, which meant that a fire in a closely-built village could destroy a large part of the agglomeration, legal precriptions (10 July 1845) prohibited thatching and imposed fireproof material to cover the roof (Although the purpose of this measure was evident, it was not perceived as such by the impoverished population. A slate or tile cover added a significant weight, imposing the reconstruction of the roof framework and sometimes reinforcement or reconstruction of the supporting walls). Black slate was used throughout the country, however the Moselle area had a preference for red half cylindrical tiles.

    The Richards-Jones Log Barn
The Jones Log Barn is one of the oldest log barns in the Mid Atlantic region. Its rare architecture and unique history has made it eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. The Jones Log Barn, which has stood for over 250 years, has suffered from time and benign neglectcausing its foundation to crack and its roof to collapse. The owner of the property where the barn is located wanted to donate the barn to Tredyffrin Township or have it demolished because its deteriorating state posed a liability. Demolition seemed to be the barn's fate until, the Tredyffrin Township Historic Architectural Review Board (HARB) petitioned the Board of Supervisors at its October 2, 2000 meeting for support in its efforts to save this unique piece of Tredyffrin history. The Board of Supervisors agreed to loan the HARB $25,000 to dismantle the barn and store it. But the HARB must pay back the $25,000 loan and pay for all the work necessary to restore and rebuild the barn. Would you like to help save the Richards-Jones Log Barn?

    Kemper House
Vorhes House Hayner House Elk Lick House ... Mercantile Museum Store
The Kemper House is an example of frontier architecture. Log construction was based on necessity. Kemper is a double-pen log house. This means two rooms, as opposed to a one-room cabin. Kemper has all the features of a house: a full second story, a cellar (not those of the log cabin in fiction and film) and a porch on each side. The front porch was for visitors and social activities; the back porch was for work.
Access to the second floor was by an enclosed staircase off the back porch. The staircase was constructed to protect the stairs from the weather. The stairs were "winders" or "tight winders," which was a quick way around a corner while still going up. Winders are a way of squeezing the maximum rise (height) in the stairs into the shortest possible run (length).
Building a log house took a considerable amount of labor to cut and shape the logs. Precautions were taken to protect the house from fire, like keeping the kitchen in a separate building. The house is made of poplar logs cut on the site. The house is about 85% original. Where logs were missing due to the changes made by the Kemper family, old logs were "cannibalized" from the other log buildings HSO had in storage.
The logs are joined together in an inverted "V" notch, sometimes called a "steeple" notch, and are chinked with lime mortar. (There were plenty of shells available for the lime.)

TITLE COVER DESCRIPTION The Ultimate Book of Historic Barns: History, Legend, Lore, Form, Function, Symbolism, Romance The contemporary reawakening of interest in the historic folk buildings of North America has made us see old barns with new eyes, even as many of these simple, dignified structures vanish from the landscape. With spectacular full-color photographs, The Ultimate Book of Historic Barns is a fascinating pictorial essay into the history, geography, symbolism, ethnic roots, design and technology, and lore and legend of these vernacular buildings - - the focal point of the family farm when agriculture was a way of life for most people.
