If you wish to receive materials sooner, join the VAF right now During the past twenty-five years, interest in the ordinary architecture of North America has grown rapidly and in diverse directions. Scholars and field professionals now apply the term "vernacular architecture" to traditional domestic and agricultural buildings, industrial and commercial structures, twentieth-century suburban houses, settlement patterns and cultural landscapes. The Vernacular Architecture Forum was formed in 1980 to encourage the study and preservation of these informative and valuable material resources. If you are interested in learning more about vernacular architecture in North America (including the United States, Canada, Mexico and the West Indies) and in building associations with hundreds of kindred souls from all parts of the continent and the world, then you should join the Vernacular Architecture Forum today

Mike Barns is Maori from New Zealand and serves as Treaty Settlement Negotiator for Tuwharetoa ki Kawerau, as an Executive Member of Tribal Government (Te Runanga O Tuwharetoa Ki Kawerau), and as Secretary of Traditional Land Trusts (Kawerau A12 Land Trust). Mr. Barns earned his Masters in Architecture from the University of Hawaii, with detailed studies in Architecture of Asia, the Pacific and the United States. He received the East West Centre Scholarship from the U.S. government and undertook international research and studies at the East West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii. He earned his B.Arch. from the University of Auckland in New Zealand. Mr. Barns is a Senior Fellow at the Institute. His work focuses on sacred landscapes and cultural risk. These studies include the investigation of cultural perceptions of the landscape and the idea of particular tribal groups having differing ways of perceiving and responding to the environment. Often, traditional perceptions have become ritualized in ceremony and prayer, and at a political level in resource management systems and tribal government environmental education, management and harvest programs. Of particular interest are the relationships of indigenous peoples with national or federal governments, utility companies, oil, coal, gas and uranium developers and the positions of indigenous peoples in such relationships. The Sacred Landscapes Program seeks to locate native peoples at a level of influence and control over their traditional resources and over landscapes that affect their social, cultural and economic well-being.

    http://www.uvm.edu/~hag/barns/glendale.html
    GLEN DALE FARM BARNS
    CORNWALL VERMONT
According to the Vermont Historic Sites and Structures Survey, the original farm at the Glen Dale site was settled in 1787 by Abraham Williamson of Washington, Massachusetts. Architectural Historian Thomas Visser reports that although the original farmhouse does not stand, the existing English barn was probably built by Williamson in the 1700s as it is representative of the first major type of agricultural buildings constructed in Vermont. Significant features of the English barn include hand-hewn, post-and-beam, hardwood timber frame, with flared columns and half dovetail tenons on the girts (see drawing). Most of the boards sheathing the walls appear to be original as they are up to 23 inches wide fastened with hand-wrought nails. In the 18th century, this structure would have been a general purpose barn, sheltering grain and hay crops as well as farm animals. The Glendale Barns Architectural Conservation Assessment, partially funded by a grant from the Preservation Trust of Vermont, makes the statement regarding the English barn that it is "... historically significant as evidence of the initial permanent English-speaking settlement of this region of Vermont." The construction materials and remarkable joinery in the English barn speak eloquently of this period in local history. Glen Dale farm attained its present appearance under the ownership of Milo B. Williamson, a breeder of Merino sheep and "gentleman's driving horses." The present Italianate style farmhouse and additional barns are pictured in Burgett's 1876 Illustrated and Topographical Atlas of the State of Vermont". The barn complex is remarkably intact when compared to the Burgett

    The Ritz Theater
In Brunswick, Georgia We spotted this marquee on the way to Jekyll Island. The Ritz Theatre, located within the "Old Town Brunswick" National Register Historic District, was built in 1898 to house the Grand Opera House, retail establishments, and the general offices of the Brunswick and Birmingham Railroad. Originally, the Grand Opera House, a three-story Victorian building featuring ornate brick and stone work, was built for the legitimate stage. Later, it served as a theatre for vaudeville. In the 1930s, as motion pictures became the rage, the Opera House was converted into a movie palace. To give the building a more modern art deco look, the first-story brick work was covered with carrara glass, and an elaborate marquee and cascading sign were added. Thus, the Grand Opera House became the Ritz Theatre. In 1980, the City of Brunswick purchased the Ritz, and again, the theatre was modernized and substantially altered; however, the Ritz sign was left intact. Under the management of the Golden Isles Arts and Humanities Association since 1989, the Ritz is returning to its roots. Recent "cosmetic surgery" has revealed parts of the original brickwork, storefronts, transoms, and glass, while live performances again grace the Ritz stage. Further restoration will offer space for artists' studios and classes on the second and third floors. 58. Bibliography On Rural Architecture And Material Culture

    Rural Architecture and Material Culture
A Bibliography by Tom Isern and Tricia Velure
You can get information on historic architecture and architectural styles from many sources. For instance, this site has links to the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and that site includes a helpful bibliography. Working in rural Bowman County, however, we realized that we often were dealing with structures that had little to do with high architecture and were not much treated in the standard sources on architectural style. So we began compiling a list of good sources for the interpretation of rural architecture and material culture, which we offer here. This bib is by no means exhaustive, but we post it because others might find it useful, and because we welcome suggested additions. One more caveat: This bib emphasizes the material culture of the plains, and is less concerned with other regions. The photo at right, incidentally, is from the Fred Hulstrand Collection in the NDSU Institute for Regional Studies. It depicts that classic vernacular dwelling of homesteaders on the northern plains, the tarpaper shack.

Cantilevered Barns A curious nineteenth century American structure, the cantilevered barn is unique to the Southern Appalachian region where over 300 have been discovered. Marian Moffett and Lawrence Wodehouse, professors at the University of Tennessee School of Architecture in Knoxville (UTK), became interested in these barns while teaching Tennessee history at the university.
Rule Barn, Sevier County, Tennessee. Courtesy University of Tennessee, Knoxville
The cantilever barn differs from an ordinary barn in that the second floor loft oversails or cantilevers out from the ground level supporting cribs. A cantilever is a horizontal projection, in this case a beam, without external bracing that appears to be self-supporting. In fact, the horizontal projection extends beneath or into the mass it supports and is kept in place by the downward force created by the mass resting on it. The base of a cantilevered barn is called a crib. It is made in the same manner as a log cabin- - logs laid horizontally on top of each other in rectangular configuration, the ends notched together at the corners. The top logs along the shorter dimension of the crib cantilever out to the side, becoming the primary supports for a second set of cantilevers. These are laid perpendicular to the primary set and extend the width of the loft, supporting the loft floor and walls. Animals could be housed within the cribs while farm machinery was stored under the over-hanging loft. Wagons parked between the cribs could easily be loaded with crops stored above in the loft.

Folk Architecture Survival in the remote areas of the Southern Plains during the nineteenth century demanded ingenuity, and the ingenuity of the people who dug into that soil is often demonstrated in their unique and resourceful architecture. "Folk Architecture of the Southern Plains," an exhibition highlighting the architecture of this area, was developed under the direction of Am Henderson, professor of architecture at Oklahoma University.
Mead Dugout, ford County Kansas, ca 1900. Photo Kansas State Historical Society
Henderson's research took him throughout the Southern Plains including the western parts of Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas, and the eastern sections of New Mexico and Colorado. He was searching for examples of "folk architecture," a tern that distinguishes vernacular, everyday buildings constructed by the people who use them from buildings designed or influenced by professional architects. "These were anonymous buildings," Henderson says. "No architect, no professional designer, yet a lot of these buildings are really good architecture in a very orthodox sense nice proportions, appealing geometry, form and space, light and shadows all those attributes that we use to characterize good buildings found in such things as barns, for instance." The fruits of his efforts are displayed in this exhibition, including pictures of ranching structures, dugouts, sod houses, silos, and barns, all with the distinctive stamp of the people who built them.
