Building the Information Base for Contemporary Islamic Architecture
It is no secret that research on architecture in the Islamic world suffers from the dearth of basic information on such elementary topics as architects' biographies and oeuvre, bibliographies of publications on contemporary architecture in the Islamic languages, and modern architectural and critical terminology. AKPIA@MIT is launching an experimental research project that aims to fill these information gaps in contemporary Islamic architecture. We would like, however, to take the long view and to collect all available information, edit, streamline, and classify it with the intent of making it available to all interested researchers. At a second stage, we will begin considering the best ways to synthesize and interpret the collected information through conferences, edited publications, and the like.
ArchNet provides us with a superb means of communication with our primary audience. It also allows us to use its extensive membership base as our most powerful potential informants. We are at this stage seeking the voluntary help of the ArchNet membership in building databases for contemporary Islamic architecture. As a pilot project, we are beginning with the construction of an electronic database on architects in the Islamic world with a special focus on the 19th and 20th century, but we welcome all information on architects from all previous periods.

    Alfred Waterhouse
    Born: 19th July 1830
    at Aigburth, Liverpool, Lancashire
    Architect
Died: 22nd August 1905 at Yattendon Court, Berkshire
Eventually, Waterhouse moved south to London, where he designed the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors off Parliament Square and the Guilds' College in South Kensington (Middlesex). He became most renowned, however, for the magnificent Natural History Museum (1873-81), also in South Kensington. This modified Romanesque style building is notable for its pioneering revival of terra-cotta - used on the facing in yellow, red and light blue - brought about by Alfred's concern for hard wearing surface materials. He also created a number of Oxbridge Colleges - Balliol College (Oxford) and Pembroke College (Cambridge) - and Prudential Assurance Buildings, such as those in Holborn, Southampton and Leeds. Though a most prolific architect, best known for his large scale public and commercial buildings, Waterhouse was also a furniture designer and painter and built many smaller domestic buildings. For example, his own residences: Barcombe Cottage (at Fallowfield in Manchester 1864), Foxhill House (at Whiteknights in Earley , Berkshire 1868) and Yattendon Court (also in Berkshire 1877). This latter county was his home in his later years and he was well known for designing such local buildings as the town halls in both

Daum Freres Ecole de Nancy Favrile Glass Poster Art ... Frank Lloyd Wright

    Daum Freres
French glassmaking business established in 1875 and based in Nancy. Auguste and Jean -Antonin Daum took over the running of the family glassmaking firm in 1887. Inspired by the success of Emile Galle at the 1889 Paris Universal Exposition, they began producing coloured, etched and moulded glass in the Art Nouveau style. Many designs for the firm were provided by the botanical illustrator Henri Berge. Daum Freres experimented with modern large -scale production techniques, and during the 1890s they collaborated with Louis Majorelle to create a series of lamps and vases. The firm won a Grand Prix at the 1900 Paris Universal Exposition, and in 1901 the brothers helped found what became the Ecole de Nancy.
    Ecole de Nancy
Decorative arts college in Nancy founded in 1901 by the Alliance Provinciale des Industries d'Art, whose members included Emile Galle, Louis Majorelle and the Daum brothers. The college ensured Nancy of its status as one of the major centres of Art Nouveau. The Musse de l'Ecole de Nancy today houses an important collection of Art Nouveau produced in the area.
    Favrile Glass
Hand-blown iridescent glass developed separately by the American designers John La Farge and Louis Comfort Tiffany. The Favrile trademark was registered by Tiffany in 1894 and is thought to be a derivation of an Old English word meaning 'handmade'.

The Good Oil Architects have some difficulty being whimsical. Take a look at Bruno Taut's 'Down with Seriousism' (1920), which you can find in the must-have collection Programs and Manifestoes on 20th-Century Architecture , edited by Ulrich Conrads (The MIT Press, 1970). Contrary to its title, the piece is a most earnest and serious attack on the old architectural generation of Bruno's day. Sure, you can find a lot of modern architecture that looks like its designer was having fun, that he or she was heaving some harpoon at pretence and pomposity. But talk to them about it, and you find yourself wallowing in the direst sort of art-speak that would make even a French intellectual blush. Architects take their whimsy very seriously.

Stephen Cassell co-founded Architecture Research Office in 1993. ARO is now a ten-person firm and has an intense focus on design: its research-driven process is the common thread running through its diverse projects. The firm often custom-designs furniture and fixtures for its clients, working closely with artists and crafts people, and designs on various scales and complexities from furniture to free-standing structures. Recently completed projects include the US Armed Forces Recruiting Station in Time Square; houses in untouched Colorado landscape and suburban New Jersey; store installations for Biotherm cosmetics; high-tech offices for the headquarters of an investment firm. ARO has been noted for several exhibition designs such as the Cooper Hewitt's Henry Dreyfus Directing Design , as well as for New York loft conversions, a lobby and a sculpture garden fence. Before ARO , Cassell spent five years at Stephen Holl Architects , where he was responsible for several award-winning projects, including the Hybrid Building in Seaside, Florida, which received a National Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects. Information Architects - Information Architects, edited by Richard Saul Wurman with contributions by 20 masters in the visual display of information deserves to be on the same shelf as Tufte's masterpieces. Nor does this book shout a simplistic "Cyberspace über alles!": there's great material in here about the importance of informational design in physical spaces and virtual interfaces, and train tracks and track balls. Very highly recommended.
