Ten miles southwest of his masterpiece, Fallingwater, along a winding mountain road is a second residence designed by pre-eminent architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Kentuck Knob, blending impeccably with its surroundings, is a superb example of Wright's organic architecture. The interior, at once expansive and intimate, reflects the presence of its current owners, Great Britain's Lord and Lady Palumbo, who are dedicated patrons of the arts both at home and abroad. Commissioned in 1953 and completed in 1956 for the Hagan family of Uniontown, Pennsylvania (of Hagan Ice Cream fame), Kentuck Knob represents the realization of Wright's achievement during his 70-year career. Kentuck Knob, also known as the Hagan House, is based upon the Usonian model, typically a single, compact floor plan based upon a modular grid system. In this case the module is an equilateral triangle and is constructed of native stone, tidewater cypress and copper. Interesting features include the use of radiant heat in the concrete floors, a 'workspace' rather than a kitchen and a flat gable roof. The house stands out for its quality, pristine condition and harmonious connection to the rural mountain site on which it stands. Spectacular views, beautiful landscaping and an

The Life of Frank Lloyd Wright
Frank Lloyd Wright was born as Frank Lincoln Wright in Richland Center in southwestern Wisconsin , on June 8, 1867 (a date sometimes reported as 1869). His father, William Carey Wright, was a musician and a preacher. His mother, Anna Lloyd-Jones was a teacher. It is said that Anna Lloyd-Jones placed pictures of great buildings in young Frank's nursery as part of training him up from the earliest possible moment as an architect. Wright spent some of his time growing up at the farm owned by his uncles near Spring Green, Wisconsin (also in the southwestern part of the state). Frank Lloyd Wright was of Welsh ethnic heritage, and was brought up in the Unitarian faith Wright briefly studied civil engineering at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, after which he moved to Chicago to work for a year in the architectural firm of J. Lyman Silsbee. In 1887, he hired on as a draftsman draftsman in the firm of Adler and Sullivan, run by Louis Sullivan (design) and Dankmar Adler (engineering) at the time the firm was designing Chicago's Auditorium Building . Wright eventuallly became the chief draftsman, and also the man in charge of the firm's residential designs. Under Sullivan, whom Wright called "Lieber Meister" (beloved master), Wright began to develop his own architectural ideas. In 1889 he married his first wife, Catherine Tobin. He also designed houses on his own toward the end, homes Wright called

On April 9, 1959 at age ninety-two, Wright died at his home in Phoenix, Arizona. By the time of his death, he had become internationally recognized for his innovative building style and contemporary designs. He had created 1,141 designs, of which 532 were completed. His name had become synonymous with great design, not only because of the form of his designs, but also because of the function. In the end, he showed not just what to live in, but more importantly he influenced the very nature of how we lived.

Two reviews, the first by Frank Laraway, former Taliesin Apprentice, then by William Allin Storrer, PhD Re: Ken Burns Public TV Work on The Life of Frank Lloyd Wright TO THE LOYAL FRIENDS OF FLW AND ORGANIC ARCHITECTURE: by Taliesin Apprentice Frank Laraway Am I alone in my very negative reaction and assessment of Ken Burn's recent TV essay on the life and work of Frank Lloyd Wright? Did anyone else notice the general implication of the distortions, half truths and the back-handed put down (intentional or unintentional) of his life and work? Does anyone dare speak out against this highly touted but misleading video essay? Did it not insinuate that the significance of the many trials of his life, his faults, his failures, his immoralities, his times of poverty and woe, far exceeded his accomplishments and his philosophy of Organic Architecture? Did it not dwell on the personal, as opposed the The Idea, The Work and the quality and volume of his artful design? Did it not spend inordinate amounts of video time with interviews of people who historically or even currently, really never understood, much less favored his uniquely American Movement? Did it not vent the very esoteric, artistic philosophy and rhetoric which has dominated American art and architectural criticism in opposition to Wright and his Organic Architecture since he and it began? The particular selections of the various periods of his life, the dreary black and white views of old work, the unfortunate old photos of him, rerun -TV shots of his aged face, all gave the public a most negative impression of the man himself. The editorial obsession with his amorous affairs, marriages, divorces, his personal mistakes, his financial woes, his proclivity for debt and living beyond his means, his leaking roofs, all gave the general impression that they literally dominated his life and work.

Frank Lloyd Wright Biography
Considered the most influential architect of his time, Frank Lloyd Wright designed about 1,000 structures, some 400 of which were built. He described his "organic architecture" as one that "proceeds, persists, creates, according to the nature of man and his circumstances as they both change." As a pioneer whose ideas were well ahead of his time, Wright had to fight for acceptance of every new design.
Wright was born on June 8, 1869, in Richland Center, Wis. His early influences were his clergyman father's playing of Bach and Beethoven and his mother's gift of geometric blocks. He entered the University of Wisconsin at 15 as a special student, studying engineering because the school had no course in architecture. Wright left Madison in 1887 to work as a draftsman in Chicago. The next year he joined the firm of Adler and Sullivan, soon becoming Louis Sullivan's chief assistant. Wright was assigned most of the firm's designing of houses, and to pay his many debts he designed for private clients in his spare time. Sullivan disapproved, and Wright set up his own office.
As an independent architect, Wright became the leader of a style known as the Prairie school. Houses with low-pitched roofs and extended lines that blend into the landscape typify the style. In 1904 he designed the strong, functional Larkin Building in Buffalo, N.Y., and in 1906 the Unity Temple in Oak Park, Ill. Wright visited Japan and Europe. In 1911 he returned to build a home on his grandfather's Wisconsin farm, Taliesin (Welsh for "shining brow"). In 1916 he designed the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo, floating the structure on an underlying sea of mud that resulted in little damage to the building in the catastrophic earthquake of 1923.

13. Wright: Bio
A biography, gallery of photos and an index of books and videos on celebrated American architect frank lloyd wright, from Masters of architecture by Carl NilssonPolias.
http://www.lexised.com/architecture/wright/bio.html
Bio Frank Lloyd Wright is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern Western architecture. His radically innovative designs, utilising a building style based on natural forms, termed by Wright as organic architecture, have stamped him as a major, respected architect. Frank Lloyd Wright was born in Richland Center, Wisconsin., June 8, 1867 and died on April 9, 1959. It is a measure of his passion and commitment to his field that he continued working right up to the time of his death. With his reputation assured on both sides of the Atlantic, Wright began to reinforce the philosophical underpinnings of his innovative building style. In keeping with his rural leanings, Wright proclaimed that the structural principles found in natural forms should guide modern American architecture. He praised the virtues of an organic architecture that would use reinforced concrete in the configurations found in sea shells and snails and would build skyscrapers the way trees were "built"; that is, with a central "trunk" deeply rooted in the ground and floors cantilevered from that trunk, like branches. Spaces within such buildings would be animated by natural light allowed to penetrate the interiors and to travel across textured surfaces as the angle of sunlight and moonlight changed. Frank Lloyd Wright has left a rich heritage of completed buildings of almost uniform splendour, but, unlike Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and others, he has nurtured few disciples. Wright can be considered an essentially idiosyncratic architect whose influence was immense but whose pupils were few.

F rank Lloyd Wright was born on June 8, 1867, in Richland Center, Wisconsin, to Anna Lloyd-Jones Wright, a teacher whose large Welsh family of farmers and ministers settled the valley that became Taliesin, and William Russell Cary Wright, a preacher and musician. An early influence was his clergyman father's playing of Bach and Beethoven. (Later on Wright would make comparisons to music and architecture in relation to the mathematical aspects of both.) See also Frank Lloyd Wright in Buffalo, NY Before her son was born, Anna had decided that her son was going to be a great architect. She placed pictures of buildings in his nursery and bedroom during his younger years to inspire him to become an architect. Using Froebel's geometric blocks to entertain and educate her son, young Frank was given free run of the playroom filled with paste, paper, and cardboard. Financial troubles plagued the William Wright family and eventually they would return to the support of the Lloyd-Jones clan in the hills of Wisconsin. Between 1878 and 1885, the family lived in Madison, but young Frank spent the summers on his Uncle James' farm near the Taliesin hill. He always considered the valley to be his home. "As a boy," he wrote in his autobiography, "I learned to know the ground plan of the region in every line and feature. For me now its elevation is the modeling of the hills, the weaving and fabric that clings to them, the look of it all in tender green or covered with snow or in full glow of summer that bursts into the glorious blaze of autumn. I still feel myself as much a part of it as the trees and birds and bees are, and the red barns."
