By By Jeff Allen Published: Monday, June 16, 2003 "As a graduate assistant teaching here I fell in love with the program," Thomas said. But archery wasn't exactly tops on Thomas' list. One hour later, assisting became teaching. The director of the activities program scheduled Thomas to assist the experienced archery coach at noon, and teach his own class at 1 p.m. "(Pretty much) whatever was said at noon was just repeated at one," Thomas said. It was from these humble beginnings that Thomas began to climb the ladder to his current position as the head coach of the U.S. Olympic Archery team. After a slow start, he found his footing and brought the program back to prominence, leading the team to eight consecutive national titles. It was from this success that Thomas began to make an appearance on the national archery scene. In 1996, he began to prepare as a coach on the international level. Thomas was picked up and mentored by Sheri Rhodes, the current women's Olympic coach, and Lloyd Brown, both prominent in the national archery program.

TSAA MESSAGE BOARD HAS BEEN ENHANCED
The TSAA Message Board
has been updated with some new features to make it easier for you to follow topics you are interested in. You can now post your own schedule events to a category, and the calendar will be updated with the info. You can even include a registration form, information sheet, tourney information hyperlink, etc. Currently, it contains an ongoing discussion of four JOAD-related proposals for the upcoming BOARD OF GOVERNOR's meeting. Initially we were lead to understand that last Sunday was the deadline for the discussion, but found out that the BOG members are monitoring the discussions right up until the actual meeting, so keep on discussing! The main page of the TSAA website also has a "ticker" area towards the bottom where you can quickly scan 5 to 10 of the latest messages with recent postings. Each has a hyperlink that will take you directly to the message. You do NOT have to register to view the messages. We do wish that you would register so that you can take advantage of all the features. Your information is never shared outside of the TSAA/NAA. There are some great posts in the topics! Please read the messages, and provide your own ideas and perspectives.

      Archery First Olympic Appearance: 1900
      by Mike Morrison
      Did You Know?
As legend has it, Robin Hood once won an archery contest by splitting the arrow of a competitor with his own arrow. That act is still known as a "Robin Hood."
Historians suggest that people were using a bow and arrow as far back as 25,000 years ago. Where it was once used as a weapon of war, the arrow is now primarily used for hunting and for archery.
Archery was regularly featured as an Olympic sport from 1900 to 1920, but was removed from competition until the 1972 Olympics in Munich.
It takes a keen eye, steady hands and nerves of steel to succeed at archery. Competitors pull back on their bows and fire arrows up to 240 kilometers per hour (about 150 miles per hour) at their targets, which are 70 meters away. The round targets each contain additional concentric circles, which separate the target into ten scoring zones. At ten points, the center zone, or "bullseye" is worth the most points. Archers shoot 12 "ends" (rounds) of six arrows each.
There are four archery events, individual events for the men and women, and team events for men and women. In the 2004 Olympics, the archery competitions and the finish of the marathon will take place at Panathinaiko Stadium, which holds 40,000 spectators. The first modern Olympics were held at Panathinaiko Stadium in 1896.

Archery is a thrilling sport that is growing in popularity. Anyone can participate, man, woman or child. To be successful as an athlete in this sport requires years of practice and development of both mental and physical skills. Archers develop techniques to fully control their body movement, their endurance and their mental steadiness, when preparing to meet the challenge of match days. Description The Olympic Archery competition takes place outdoors, in four categories of events: Individual events, men’s and women’s Team events, men’s and women’s Competitors shoot standing, aiming to land their arrow in the smallest (the central) circle, 12 cm in diameter, on a target face 122 cm in diameter, placed 70 m away. The target consists of ten coloured concentric circles known as ‘rings’. An arrow in the innermost circle (the ‘bull’s eye’) is worth ten points, and an arrow in the outermost circle (the ‘outer’) counts for one. An arrow landing successfully in a ring between these two is worth from two to nine points, depending which one it is.

    OLYMPIC ARCHERY
Archery first appeared as a sport in the 1900 Olympics Games in Paris and was held at the Games of 1904, 1908 and 1920. However, international rules had not yet been developed and each host country used its own format. As a result, archery events in these early Olympic Games varied widely. Because of the lack of uniform international rules archery was then dropped from the Olympic Games.
The Federation Internationale de Tir a l'Arc (FITA), the international governing body of the sport, was founded in 1931 and implemented standardized rules for competition. It allowed the first World Championship to be held that same year. After countries adopted the new rules, archery returned to the 1972 Games in Munich.
Initially, only individual competition took place - the team competition was added in 1988. There are four archery events held at the Olympics: Men's Individual, Women's Individual, Men's Team and Women's Team. Archers used to shoot a double FITA round of 288 total arrows, with the championship decided by the highest total score. In an effort to make the sport more exciting, the format was changed to head-to-head elimination for the top 64 competitors beginning with the 1992 Olympics. Individual Competition
    • The format of the men's and women's individual competition is the same and consists of a ranking round followed by the FITA Olympics round.

The Scottish Archery Association (SAA) is affiliated to the national governing body, the Grand National Archery Society (GNAS). We are also associated to the Scottish Sports Association and SportScotland. There are about 50 clubs throughout the whole of Scotland, serving the most densely populated areas. The SAA and its clubs are run by volunteers - we have no paid staff. Most clubs offer target archery. However there may also be facilities to enable you to take part in field archery. Archery is an Olympic sport, with a Scottish archer having taken part in the Sydney Olympic Games. If, however, you are looking for a recreation or hobby, then local archery clubs will provide that facility.
    Getting Started
Contact the Regional secretary of the SAA to find out where your local club is located. Then simply arrange to go along to the club, where you will attend a beginner's course. You will be given in-depth instruction and coaching during your course, covering the basic techniques of archery, including safety, to ensure that you gain the maximum enjoyment from the very start. All equipment will be provided by the club, so you won't need to supply anything. At the end of your beginner's course (4-6 weeks) you will be invited to join the club, and affiliate to the SAA.
