Early History
Archery is one of the most ancient of sports. During the paleolithic era (35,000 to 8,000 B.C.), the use of bow and arrow for hunting probably developed independently in many places throughout the world. By definition, there's no documentary evidence of archery competitions during the prehistoric era. But certainly, during that long expanse of time, now and then some ancient hunter who boasted about his skill with the bow must have been challenged to a contest by someone equally proud of his skill. There probably wasn't much to brag about. While an arrow can be launched by a bow with greater speed than any missile can be thrown, primitive bows are not very accurate. Western movies greatly exaggerated the skill of Native American bowmen; their hunting ability was based much more on skill and stealth in tracking than on marksmanship. The bow first entered military history in 2,340 B.C., when Sargon of Akkad in northern Babylonia conquered the Sumerians of southern Babylonia with an infantry made up mostly of archers. From that time on, many ancient peoples used archery in warfare in varying ways and with varying degrees of success.

Olympic Medalists: Archery
History
Various kinds of archery competition were on the Olympic program from 1900 through 1920. The exact type of competition depended on the host country. England, in 1900, and the United States, in 1908, favored target archery. Countries on the European continent, though, favored more exotic kinds of competition, usually more closely associated with hunting. After 1920, the International Olympic Committee took control of medal sports and archery was dropped because there were no standardized international rules. An international governing body was finally organized in 1931 to standardize rules and oversee competition, but target archery wasn't restored to the Olympics until 1972. From 1972 through 1988, standings were based on cumulative scores. Since 1992, competition has been based on a single-elimination tournament. The scores shown for those Olympics are for the gold medal contest between two archers. Top of page

The circular target has a series of ten concentric rings around a solid gold center, or "bull's-eye." Ranging outward from the bull's eye, the colors of the rings are red, blue, black, and white. The rings are assigned point values for arrows shot into them ranging from 10 for a bull's-eye to 1 point for an arrow in the outer white ring. Striking the target dead-center is somewhat like standing on the goal line of a football field and hitting an apple under the opposite goal post. Competition
Men and women compete in separate divisions, and the top 64 men and 64 women from the qualifying rounds then enter head to head direct elimination matches. The winner of each match advances until the gold medal winner is determined. Matches use 18 arrows until the quarterfinals, semifinals, and finals, which are 12-arrow matches. Archers can propel arrows at speeds of more than 150 miles per hour.

Origins

Bows and arrows have been important weapons of hunting and war since their invention 50,000 years ago. With the advent of firearms, they became obsolete as weapons, but archery continued to be practised as a target sport.
Archers must control the smallest body motions. Even a breath taken the wrong way can affect the accuracy of a shot.
The Sport
The object of archery is to shoot arrows into a target as accurately as possible within a specified time limit. The target is 122cm in diameter and is placed 70m away. At the centre of each target is a gold bull's eye surrounded by concentric circles of red, blue, black and white. Shots are scored according to which ring, and portion of the ring, the arrow strikes.
Inner Outer Gold (bull's eye) 10 pts 9 pts Red Blue Black White
The competition begins with a ranking round, followed by head-to-head elimination rounds. In the ranking round, each archer shoots 72 arrows and the results are used for both individual and team standings. The top 64 archers and the top 16 teams (threee archers per team) advance to elimination rounds where they compete head-to-head. Shots alternate, and each archer has 40 seconds to shoot each arrow in the individual event, and 20 seconds per arrow in the team event. Each elimination round up to the quarter finals consists of 18 arrows. From the quarter finals on, each archer shoots 12 arrows. The highest scorer from each pair advances to the next round and the loser is eliminated. In the team event, each archer on the team shoots nine arrows.

It allowed humans, perhaps as far back as the Stone Age, to hunt for food. It was also a huge advance in warfare. Archery has left such an indelible mark on civilisation that it has been ranked alongside the development of speech and mastery of fire as an influence on culture. For around five millennia the story of the bow and arrow has been writ large in folklore and history. In the climax to Homer’s Odyssey , Odysseus’s prowess with the bow is pivotal in a battle with Penelope’s suitors.

The Olympic Games were held every four years for more than 1,000 years, until a.d. 393, when a Roman emperor stopped them.
Some Modern Olympic Firsts The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens, Greece. A total of 312 athletes from 13 nations participated in nine sports. Women competed in the Olympic Games for the first time. For the first time, medals were awarded to the first three people to finish each event The Olympic flag was raised for the first time, and the Olympic oath was introduced. The five interlaced rings of the flag represent: Africa, America, Europe, Asia, and Australia. The first Winter Olympics, featuring skiing and skating events, were held. The Olympic flame was introduced at the Olympic Games. A relay of runners carries a torch with the flame from Olympia, Greece, to the site of each Olympics. Starting with the 1994 Winter Olympics, the winter and summer Games have been held two years apart, instead of in the same year.
