HISTORY OF ARCHERY IN OLYMPICS Archery first appeared in the Olympic Games in 1900 and was contested again in 1904, 1908, and 1920. In those four Games, it was possible for an archer to compete in numerous events and win several medals. Hubert van Innis (BEL) is the most decorated archer in Olympic history, winning six gold medals and three silvers in 1900 and 1920. Archery was re-introduced to the Olympic program in 1972 with an individual event for men and for women and John Williams and Doreen Wilber of the USA captured the gold medals. Team competition was added to the medal program in Seoul in 1988.

42nd World Archery Championships Finals To Hit Central Park
As previously announced, more than 500 archers from at least 60 countries will compete in the qualification and elimination rounds in Van Cortlandt Park’s Parade Grounds in the Bronx from July 14-18. Additionally, as an Olympic qualifier, forty-six individuals and the top eight teams in these World Championships will win positions for their countries in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens.
“I am thrilled that the finals of archery’s premier event for 2003 will be held in such a prominent location as Central Park,” said Jim Easton, the President of FITA. “It is a great credit to the New York City officials and the 2003 World Championships Organizing Committee that we are able to bring this outstanding event to one of the world’s premier outdoor venues. We promote archery as a sport for everyone and the atmosphere created by the archers and crowds should be something very special.”
Reigning Olympic and world champions are expected to compete and the public is invited to attend both the qualifying and final rounds free of charge. The opening ceremonies will be held in Van Cortlandt Park on July 14.
Central Park, designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1853 and one of the most massive public works in the city’s history, is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year.

Archery Indoor Outdoor Discontinued Olympic Sports The discovery of the bow and arrow dates back 100,000 years ago, if we're to judge from excavations and cave drawings. During antiquity, the ancient Greeks considered archery a sport as well as a mighty weapon. Greek mythology is replete with references to Olympian gods and heroes celebrated as skilled archers. Artemis, the goddess of hunting, was considered the master archer of all the mythical Olympians. In Homer's Odyssey, Ulysses returns to his palace and island kingdom after 20 years and numerous adventures to confront his faithful wife Penelope's suitors in a grand archery competition. The first recorded archery contest of recent times took place in Finsbury, England, in 1583, where 3,000 archers competed. Archery, nevertheless, developed into a true sport in England in the 18 th century. The first international competition was held between English and French archers in 1900, the year that archery was accepted into the Olympic Games. It remained in the Olympic program until the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, with the exception of the 1912 Olympic Games in Stockholm. In the context of the Olympic Games, the archery competition is called the Olympic round competitors only shoot with the recurve bow. The Olympic round, where a total of 128 archers compete (64 men and 64 women), will last seven days in the 2004 Athens Games.

OLYMPIC ARCHERY
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1900 Anyone familiar with the legend of Robin Hood knows archery competitions date back at least to mediaeval times. Indeed, today's archers still honour the fabled outlaw. The term "Robin Hood" now refers to splitting the shaft of an arrow already in the target with another arrow. The equipment has crept forward in its technology since Robin and his merry men had the run of Sherwood Forest, but the sport of archery remains essentially unchanged. A recurve bow coated in fibreglass has become standard, and arrows made of aluminium and carbon graphite can travel more than 240km/h, but the most important requirements are straightforward: steady hands, strong shoulders, flexible muscles, sharp eyes and nerves of steel. Archery is a thrilling sport that is growing in popularity. Anyone can participate, man, woman or child. To be successful as an athlete in this sport requires years of practice and development of both mental and physical skills. Archers develop techniques to fully control their body movement, their endurance and their mental steadiness, when preparing to meet the challenge of match days. Various kinds of archery competition were on the Olympic program from 1900 to 1920. The exact type of competition depended on the host country. England, in 1900, and the United States, in 1908, favored target archery. Countries on the European continent, though, favored more exotic kinds of competition, usually more closely associated with hunting. After 1920, the International Olympic Committee took control of medal sports and archery was dropped. It then disappeared for more than 50 years. It reappeared as target archery at Munich in 1972 and has remained a fixture ever since.

Introducing Youth to Shooting Through Archery By Lloyd W. Brown Jr.,
National Coach, National Archery Association
Assistant Coach, U.S. Olympic Archery Team (This article is reprinted from the Third National Shooting Range Symposium, 1996 with permission from International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies, Wildlife Management Institute and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.)
Archery is a great way to introduce kids to the shooting sports. Every kid wants to shoot a bow and arrow, and they really love doing it. Archery is widely accepted by parents and youth organizations. It's a great lifetime sport for men, women and kids. It's something the whole family can do together. It's easy to sell parents, teachers and youth organizations on the advantages and benefits for kids of shooting a bow and arrow. Those benefits include the challenges of an Olympic sport, building confidence, self-esteem and concentration skills. I like to tell parents that the skills that I teach their kids in archery can be used to prepare for a math test or job interview. It also helps them increase upper body strength.

The year-round, warm-weather facility in Chula Vista, California, was a gift to the United States Olympic Committee from the San Diego National Sports Training Foundation, a group of dedicated business and community leaders, and volunteers who raised the funds to build the Center.

Through programs developed by the national governing bodies of each sport, and estimated 4,000 athletes each year will receive the coaching, support and facilities necessary to be their best. These numbers are increasing each year.
The Center, which officially opened in June 1995, not only benefits thousands of Olympic hopefuls, but serves local youth and citizens nationwide. The Training Center has been designed to accommodate thousands of daily visitors with escorted tours of our nation's state-of-the-art national Training Center at no charge.
