Advertisement In Brief We love the Olympics. Not because it gives us a glimpse of who we expect to see selling cars and toothpaste to us for the next six months, but because the Games embody the spirit of the amateur. Or at least they’re supposed to. If you really want to see the embodiment of the amateur, start looking at the early games. Like the guy who ran the 1904 marathon in dress shoes. Or the entire team that couldn't pay the landing fees in Los Angeles because they didn't sell enough coffee en route. When the flames at Sydney got stuck on that little mechanical track this year, the organizers looked bad. Trust us: that was nothing Party On You might also be interested in Circus Maximus: Rome's Astrodome

History of Our Olympic Games Welcome to our web site!
Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

OLYMPIC ARCHERY
Archery first appeared as a sport in the 1900 Olympics Games in Paris and was held at the Games of 1904, 1908 and 1920. However, international rules had not yet been developed and each host country used its own format. As a result, archery events in these early Olympic Games varied widely. Because of the lack of uniform international rules archery was then dropped from the Olympic Games.
The Federation Internationale de Tir a l'Arc (FITA), the international governing body of the sport, was founded in 1931 and implemented standardized rules for competition. It allowed the first World Championship to be held that same year. After countries adopted the new rules, archery returned to the 1972 Games in Munich.
Initially, only individual competition took place - the team competition was added in 1988. There are four archery events held at the Olympics: Men's Individual, Women's Individual, Men's Team and Women's Team. Archers used to shoot a double FITA round of 288 total arrows, with the championship decided by the highest total score. In an effort to make the sport more exciting, the format was changed to head-to-head elimination for the top 64 competitors beginning with the 1992 Olympics. Individual Competition
  • The format of the men's and women's individual competition is the same and consists of a ranking round followed by the FITA Olympics round.

Olympics History Origin Of Modern Olympic Games Inflaming the inspiration and enthusiasm from the Ancient Olympic Games , which were conducted every four years between 776 BC and 393 AD in Olympia, Greece until forbidden by Emperor of Greece in 393 AD, the Modern Olympic Games were started in 1896 at Athens, Greece under the initiation and leadership of a French educationalist Baron Pierre de Coubertin. DISCIPLINES Archery: Like so many other sports Archery is a game of Egyption origin. It originated probably in the pre-historic period through primitive men, who used it either for self - defence or for food by killing animals. In the later centuries men used bows. Ancient Hindu Epics, tell of the heroic wars where Lord Rama and Arjuna, to quote a few, played important roles in the field of Archer which gradually turned into a discipline in the Modern Olympics. Although Archery featured in the Modern Olympics in 1900 at Paris, 1904 at St. Luis, 1908 at London and 1920 Antwerp Olympic Games, it was discontinued till the 1972 Munich Olympic Games.

    Archery First Olympic Appearance: 1900
    by Mike Morrison
    Did You Know?
As legend has it, Robin Hood once won an archery contest by splitting the arrow of a competitor with his own arrow. That act is still known as a "Robin Hood."
Historians suggest that people were using a bow and arrow as far back as 25,000 years ago. Where it was once used as a weapon of war, the arrow is now primarily used for hunting and for archery.
Archery was regularly featured as an Olympic sport from 1900 to 1920, but was removed from competition until the 1972 Olympics in Munich.
It takes a keen eye, steady hands and nerves of steel to succeed at archery. Competitors pull back on their bows and fire arrows up to 240 kilometers per hour (about 150 miles per hour) at their targets, which are 70 meters away. The round targets each contain additional concentric circles, which separate the target into ten scoring zones. At ten points, the center zone, or "bullseye" is worth the most points. Archers shoot 12 "ends" (rounds) of six arrows each.
There are four archery events, individual events for the men and women, and team events for men and women. In the 2004 Olympics, the archery competitions and the finish of the marathon will take place at Panathinaiko Stadium, which holds 40,000 spectators. The first modern Olympics were held at Panathinaiko Stadium in 1896.

The Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta came to a close Sunday night, after two weeks of athletic competition between 197 countries and over 11,000 athletes the most ever in an Olympic Games. The Games closed with International Olympic Committee president Juan Antonio Samaranch praising the city of Atlanta, but notably failing to call the game as "the greatest in Olympic history" a phrase that has become routine in his Closing Ceremonies speeches.

100. Lebanese Archery Federation - History Of Competitions
in recent history and after the advent of firearms did archery become known as amajor sporting event and that thru its introduction in the Olympics of 1900.
http://www.laf.org.lb/compete.htm
It was long the weapon of choice of old armies in their insatiable pursuit for new conquests. Also, archery became the favorite sport in the ancient world, historians have reported, when it was introduced in the Greek Olympic games in 776 B.C., as portrayed by effigies of Hercules. Much later, it was immortalized by the anecdotes of Robin Hood and William Tell. Only in recent history and after the advent of firearms did archery become known as a major sporting event and that thru its introduction in the Olympics of 1900. Modern-day archery competition was first introduced in 1972, and later in Seoul in 1988, and included tournaments for men and women. The international governing body for archery, FITA, was founded in 1931. It now counts over 100 members worldwide. The current president is Mr. James Easton. Local Events:
