Athens 1896 12 countries took part in these Games for which there were 80,000 spectators. The Americans dominated most of the athletics events (they won 9 out of the 15 events), while the Germans were superior in gymnastics, and the French in cycling. However the disappointment of the Greeks was soon forgotten when Spyros Louis managed to win the marathon.
Following the success of these first games, the Greek proposed that all subsequent Games were to take place in Greece. But this was not approved, and it was then agreed that the second Games were to be held in Paris as recognition of the hard work done by Baron de Coubertin. top
Paris 1900 These Games took part at the same time when the World Fair was being organized, and the organizers of this Fair, did all they could so that the Olympic Games would not steal the show. The Paris Games lasted 5 months, and because of this the interest in the Games were not high. No adequate sports stadia were built and the Games were held at the track of the Racing Club de France at the Bois de Boulogne. However the standard of the athletes was already getting better. Water polo was one of the sports in this edition.

With permission of the foundation TOP Archery Around 1988 a growing concern grew in the archery world that archery might loose its Olympic status. The reason for this was the conceived low attractiveness of an archery tournament for both a real live end television audience. In the Netherlands this resulted in an initiative by Harry Jacobs and a group of passionate archery enthusiasts to see if they could work on a tournament model that was more interesting to the public and keep its attractiveness for the archers themselves. The model they proposed was one of personal duels. This model offers the possibility of a fast and attractive game where a lot is happening and the game stays interesting. This contrary to the then recognized competition system of the FITA.

    THE TORCH OF BERLI

The Museum features a complete collection of Olympic torches used for both Summer and Winter Games. This collection is the only one of its kind in the world. The first Olympic torch relay was organised for the 1936 Games in Berlin. The tradition of the Olympic torch relay is still with us. To remind us of the important role of fire in both human and Olympic history, a flame burns constantly on the esplanade of this Museum.

    THE TORCH OF MONTREAL 1976

It was at the Montreal 1976 Games that, for the first time in the history of the Games, technology played a role in the torch relay. The sacred Olympic Flame was electronically transmitted from Athens to Ottawa by satellite and from there it was transported by runners to Montreal. On this occasion the final igniting ceremony was performed by Sandra Henderson and Stephane Prefontaine, both 15 years old, who lit the big bowl together.

The first time the medals were hung around the necks of the victors was at the Rome Olympics in 1960. On that occasion a chain made of laurel leaves was designed to suspend the medals on. Today, a coloured ribbon is often used.

The Summer Paralympic Games are the ultimate competition for world class elite athletes with a disability and as such are linked to the Olympic Celebration each quadrennium. The Paralympic Games, in terms of complexity, duration and the number of competitors, are second only to the Olympic Games.
The fundamental philosophy guiding the Paralympic movement is that athletes with disabilities should have opportunities to pursue their goals in sport equivalent to those of non-disabled athletes. Athletes who compete in the Paralympics set their sights on the dream of winning a gold medal, are committed to strenuous training regimes and meet strict qualifying standards to be selected to their national team. The Paralympic Games represent a commitment to excellence that allows elite athletes to achieve their personal best. The Paralympic Games exemplify the Olympic ideal of participation and sportsmanship.

The archers will shoot in team competition and individual competition, using olympic recurve and compound bows. The tournament will also recognize the U.S. Archery All-Academic Team as well as the Collegiate All-Americans, Madison said. It will be an outdoor competition open to the public. "I'm so pleased that we'll be able to host the tournament for 2005," said Taylor. "We have so many things at GC&SU to showcase to visitors. We will look forward to showing them our beautiful campus and offering up some Southern hospitality." "Though the program is young, the GC&SU Archery Team has done well at the state and national level," Madison said. "That gave us some recognition." The younger Madison discovered archery at a mall in Atlanta where there was an archery range, said his father, who is a former archer himself and now a member of the board of directors of the National Archery Association Foundation and a NAA National Coach. The Madisons are from Macon. "We were really fortunate to get a good core of kids with good attitudes together," Madison said. "We also had great support from the school. We had quality indoor practice facilities and that gave us an opportunity to practice more frequently. Some colleges have a difficult time starting a program, but we didn't."

Oh man, I just stuck my gps out the window and it really hit me just how far away I am from home . In other news, the dspace server is up and running, and whats more I dont have to set up a CVS server as the boss reckons we are getting ourselves a sourceforge project. Good stuff.
Friday, 04-06-2004, 11:32:32 Wooo, after much poking, pleading, and general weeping and knashing of teeth I have the Dspace server behaving as it should. Going for lunch with the girlfriend now, and then the rest of the day will be dedicated to getting a CVS server behaving itself. My condolences go out to Doneagain who has to spend the summer on dialup :P Thursday, 03-06-2004, 14:33:50 Arrived safely in Germany, special no thanks to Ryanair for making me check in my laptop bag as it was too heavy.. ended up carrying my laptop around Stansted in my arms like a gimp. Not impressed. According to the An Post website my bowcase has now left Heathrow, so Im hoping it will arrive tomorrow. The job is keeping me busy, getting this odd runtime error from the dspace installer that Im still trying to iron out... its failing on the very very final step of the installation, so Im almost there. Anyway, enough typing, I have to get back to it. On a parting note, Aldi Coke tastes different to Lidl Coke.
