Submit A Special Request Olympic Sports History ARCHERY A rchers began forming tournaments when the bow was replaced as the main weapon of war in the 17 th century, and target archery evolved as a competitive sport. One of the oldest known and continuously running tournaments still held today is the Ancient Scorton Silver Arrow contest held in Yorkshire, England. The National Archery Association (NAA) was founded and held its first tournament in Chicago in 1879. Archery didn't become and official event in the modern Olympics until 1900 in Paris, France. Women began competing in the Olympic archery events in 1908 in London. However, international rules had not been developed and each host country used its own format causing confusion. Because of the lack of uniform international rules, archery was eliminated from the Olympic program after 1920 and did not reappear until the 1972 Games in Munich, Germany. In 1930, Poland hosted the first real international archery contest and organized the Federation International de Ter a l'Arc (FITA) or International Archery Federation in 1931. FITA is currently the governing body for international archery competition and implements standardized rules for competition. The 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, Germany were the proving ground where FITA rules were recognized and established. The competitors shot 36 arrows for a single competition and 72 arrows for a double competition. Men shot from 90, 70, 50 and 30 meters while women shot from 70, 60, 50 and 30 meters. In the1988 Games in Seoul, Korea, team competition was added. There are four archery events held at the Olympics: Men's Individual, Women's Individual, Men's Team and Women's Team.

The inaugural meeting of the British Timken Bowmen was held on Thursday December 9 th 1954 in the works canteen at the Duston site of British Timken. 27 potential members attended, the Chairman for the meeting was Mr D. E. Holmes, British Timken’s Chief Product Engineer. The initial annual subscription was five shillings (25p). A caretaker committee was elected to function until the first Annual General Meeting with Mr Holmes as chairman. At the first annual general meeting held on April 21 st 1955 a committee of 10 members was elected. Doug Holmes was elected Chairman, Janet Tysoe agreed to act as Secretary and Cyril Hill was appointed club Treasurer. During the 1950s the club thrived, reaching a peak membership of over 70 Timken employees and their families. In 1958 two members became Northamptonshire’s first ‘Master Bowmen’, Joanne Taunton and Norman Taylor, both of whom were invited to shoot in the GNAS International Trials, which were held in Chester. In 1959 Jo Taunton was selected to shoot for Great Britain at the World Championships in Stockholm. In the '60s BTB were the premier club in Northamptonshire, providing most members of the County Team. During its first 15 years of history club member won no less than five National Championships, seven East Midland Championships and 29 County Championships. Additionally the club’s members were to the forefront of administration both in the Region and the County.

Greek Olympics Ancient Times The Greeks invented Olympic athletic contests and held them in honor of their gods. But sports and competitions are part of the history and culture of many ancient civilization - including those of Meso- America. In Egypt there had been many findings and glyphs depicting sports events have been found. In ancient Egypt, acrobats, who displayed physical agility and strength, were mainly viewed as performers. Most Egyptian acrobats were women, and they performed alone or in groups. Young Egyptian boys also participated in acrobatics, and played games with hoops. There are 200 wrestling groups depicted on one wall of the tomb at Beni-Hassan. The wrestlers wear a loin-cloth similar to the cod-piece or loin-cloth of Minoan athletes. Although the scenes portray the various positions and "holds" involved in wrestling, the sport was practiced as part of Egyptian military training, and there is no evidence of organized competition. Ancient Egyptians also participated in various running activities. One of the kingdom's most important festivals was the "jubilee celebration," a festival first celebrated on the 30th anniversary of the reign of Amenophis III, and celebrated continuously in three-year intervals. In the "ritual run", an integral part of the celebration, the current king would run between two sets of three semicircles, the semicircles being cosmic references to the order of the universe. Unlike later Greek footraces, however, the Egyptian king ran alone, without a competitor. Physical evidence of the "ritual run" exists at the pyramid complex of King Djoser, where one can find the ruins of the world's first sports facility, complete with the running track for the "ritual run."

Once we get interested in something, we start thinking of ways to improve it's efficiency. Let's take a look at the recorded history of archery, the study and practice of bow and arrow use. Arrowhead evolved to include the following: Barbed arrowheads-these would make arrow removal difficult. Small Triangular tips-used to pierce chain-mail armour. Half-moot tips-used to cut through the rigging of opposing ships. In 1208 AD, Temujin became Great Khan of the Mongols, better known as Genghis Khan. The Mongols used composite bows of approx. 70lb. Draw weight and used a thumb ring to release the bowstring. Unarmored Mongol soldiers would were silk under-shirts to minimize injuries inflicted by the arrows of the enemies. The silk fabric would wrap around the arrow head without being cut as the arrow stuck the Mongol soldiers. This would allow the clean removal of the arrows by slowly pulling on the silk fabric, eliminating further damage caused by the barbed arrowheads.

So, I'll give you a brief summation of how it all began, and then provide some further links for additional information. So, how and why did it all begin? In ancient Greece, they often combined religious festivals with sporting events, to honor certain gods. The Greeks held the following: The Pythian Games The Nemean Games The Isthmian Games The Olympic Games It was the last one, the Olympics, that were held for the Greek God Zeus and were also the most popular with the people. The first game is said to be held at Olympia, Greece in 776 B.C. and has been held every 4 years since = 1,168 years! Then, Greece came under the rule of the Roman Empire and the Olympic games were declined, to the point where they actually declined in 393 B.C. by the Christian Roman Emperor, Theodosius I, who objected to what he felt were some "pagan rites" associated with the games. In the beginning, the Olympic games were confined to just one day and one event. That event was a footrace that was the length of the stadium. Soon, additional races were added as the popularity grew, as well as discus and javelin throws (tosses), broad jumps, boxing, wrestling, chariot racing and a pentathlon.
