Chapter 1
The Unities of Discourse Source: The Archaeology of Knowledge (1969), publ. Routledge, 1972. The First 3 Chapters of main body of work are reproduced here. The use of concepts of discontinuity, rupture, threshold, limit, series, and transformation present all historical analysis not only with questions of procedure, but with theoretical problems. It is these problems that will be studied here (the questions of procedure will be examined in later empirical studies - if the opportunity, the desire, and the courage to undertake them do not desert me). These theoretical problems too will be examined only in a particular field: in those disciplines - so unsure of their frontiers, and so vague in content - that we call the history of ideas, or of thought, or of science, or of knowledge. But the unities that must be suspended above all are those that emerge in the most immediate way: those of the book and the . At first sight, it would seem that one could not abandon these unities without extreme artificiality. Are they not given in the most definite way? There is the material individualisation of the book, which occupies a determined space which has an economic value, and which itself indicates, by a number of signs, the limits of its beginning and its end; and there is the establishment of an oeuvre

    Geo-archeology
    General
In the Netherlands an increasing need for specialists at the overlap between archeology and earth sciences has led to the awareness that a study in Geoarcheology is desirable. A Bachelors/Masters programme is being set up, offering a study at the interface of both sciences. Most of the archeological material in the Netherlands is stored in the ground, therefore, knowledge of changes and influences of soil on materials is of prime importance. On the other hand, reconstruction of the type of landscape that might have been present at the time of the arefact uncovered in archeological sites can be performed using different techniques applied already in Earth Sciences.
    The Study
As of september 2004 the Vrije Universiteit starts a Master program in Geoarchaeology. The complete program will be offered in English. Foreign students with a background in Archaeology* or Earth Sciences will be able to enroll in the course. We already offer two closely related courses, respectively archaeometry, which is material- oriented, and landscape archaeology, which both will lead to a MSc Diploma. A third course (bioarchaeology) is in development.

Posted: Tue Dec 03, 2002 1:03 pm Post subject: Local archeology A group of us is headed down to Playa in Jan, staying for two weeks this year, at a great place in Playacar for the second time. Our walk into town, or to the beach, or to the ferry takes us thru one of the sets of small Maya temples scattered around.
Is there anyone that y'all know of that could provide some info about these ruins and maybe some more specifics about Playa Del Carmen's archeological past? I know that its Maya name was XamanHa, but I can't find much specifically as to the role it played other than as an alternate port if Tulum or Xcaret were "closed" for some reason. I've also found some references to the possibility of the existence of a sacbe from Coba that one time may have led to Playa.
Whom would you recommend? Now that Dave Gowman has passed on (bless his soul - my condolences to all who grieve his passing), who is the local expert?
