Bobst Library Inventory Report
A complete collection inventory is underway in Bobst Library. Following a study of missing books conducted in Spring 1994, funding was secured for a multi-year “search and replace” effort. Project staff are concentrating first on the most heavily-used parts of the collection that are also most prone to losses. Thanks to a combination of funds donated to the Library and additional financial commitments by the University, missing books are being replaced and catalog records deleted for items not found and which are irreplaceable. The project will take six years to complete and by the year 2002 the entire collection will have been reviewed. The inventory is in addition to the ongoing QuickSearch procedure in place to search for books reported missing by users. You are strongly encouraged to complete a QuickSearch form that is available on floors 1- 10 of Bobst Library and drop it at Circulation on the first floor. Circulation staff will notify you within 24 hours concerning the item's availability. In many cases our searches are successful within the first 24 hours. For those that are not, your search request initiates the replacement process for that title.

On the World Wide Web there are an estimated 250,000 sites that have content relating to the subject matter of anthropology. Unfortunately an estimated four-fifths contain little useful information. There are tens of thousands of anthropology sites containing redundant links to other pages that are collections of redundant links. Anthro.Net cuts through all of this by using advanced search technology to hunt down sites that contain useful content and information relating to anthropology.

Many links are dead, and there are hundreds of of additional resources around. Manual maintence of this list long ago became unfeasible. I do intend to update it, once I have located good links management software.] This page attempts to track ALL Byzantine material on the Internet, and ALL significant entry points for Medieval studies. Ancient and Classical links, except insofar as they impinge directly on Byzantine and Western Medieval matters, should be sought out via the direct links provided to ARGOS associates which track and maintain sites devoted to the Ancient world. Since this page was begun, the Medieval and Byzantine Internet has exploded in size. As a result, although I will take suggestions, I will no longer add the following materials:

The National Museum began early to be the depository of collections, now become the largest in the country, of objects illustrating North American archaeology-that is the state of aboriginal culture before it became modified by European influence. These prehistoric relics, derived from mounds and other ancient burial-places, on or below the surface of the ground, in caves, shellheaps, etc., are made of chipped and ground stone, copper, bone, horn, shell, clay, and to a small extent of wood and vegetable fibres. "Similarity of shape afforded the principal guidance in arranging these specimens, many of which leave a wide scope for conjecture as to the uses to which they were applied by the makers." Three separate series have been laid out for exhibition in the great upper hall of the old Smithsonian building by Dr. Charles Rau, who is curator. First a synoptical collection illustrating European archaeology, by means of typical specimens arranged serially in the circle of table-cases occupying the center of the room; this should be examined first, as it condenses into brief space the whole range of prehistoric workmanship. The general collection illustrating the archaeology of all North America forms the second, and most important part of the exhibit; the third part being independent special collections relating to limited localities. The general collection occupies the table-cases on the floor and proceeds in classification as the cases are numbered, from 1 upwards; the wall cases being devoted to the special local exhibits.

The image of rising waters creeping up hillsides behind a newly built dam, as occurred at the Roman site of Zeugma in recent years, is an apt symbol of the many hazards that imperil archeological sites, not just in Turkey but in many countries (see Damming the Past ). In this interview, Dr. Gaetano Palumbo, the World Monument Fund's Director of Archeological Conservation for Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Central Asia, touches on some of the challenges facing archeologists whose passion and very livelihood continue to be threatened by development.
Classic finds NOVA: You recently visited Zeugma. I realize a lot of it is now underwater, but what did you think of the site? Palumbo: The site is in a splendid position. It's on a hillside now overlooking this blue-water lake. You can understand that obviously a lot has been flooded, but there are still many remains above water. Unfortunately, it has not been well presented. Some work has been conducted on one of the villas that has remained above the waterline, but only now are local authorities undertaking some presentation efforts. There is a visitor's center and ticket offices, but no one was there when I visited, and the site is barely indicated anyway from the main roads. So there is not much to see right now. Eventually, I think, we'll probably reveal more of the site, and probably some presentation can be made about what has been done in terms of salvage work and what has been found there. Maybe visitors can go to the Gaziantep Museum and see some of the mosaics that were retrieved [see

The animals in this particular Kelsey Museum exhibit range from representations of familiar fish to mythical beasts. Students at the University of Michigan's Department of Classical Studies used all these artifacts to explore and present different aspects of animals in antiquity: animals as food, laborers, entertainment, pets, sacrificial victims, and symbols of power and terror. Community Outreach Some sixth-grade students in Ann Arbor used the Animals exhibit to learn problem-solving and information-seeking skills, how to research the role of animals in the ancient world, something about how exhibitions are created and to create an artifact of their own. History and Archeology of the Red River War
The Red River War officially began on July 20, 1874, when General Sherman telegraphed General Philip Sheridan to begin an offensive against the Kiowa and Comanches on the plains of West Texas and Oklahoma. Six years earlier, Sheridan, in answer to a question about how Indians were to be treated, said, "I will say nothing and do nothing to restrain our troops from doing what they deem proper on the spot, and will allow no mere vague general charges of cruelty and inhumanity to tie their hands." An undeclared Red River War had been going for about twenty years before it was officially declared. As the settlers moved into the counties along the upper Brazos River, contacts and conflicts between them and the Indians became more frequent. The horse and mules of the settlers represented wealth to the Indians, and they saw no reason to treat the settlers differently from they way they treated other Indians. In Five Years A Cavalryman, H. H. McConnell describes how 350 Indians besieged Fort Richardson in July 1867. Although there were only twenty-eight men in the fort, the Indians camped by the fort for three days. When the Indians saw that they couldn't get the fort's horses, they left. Archeology in NH With 10,000 years of New Hampshire history to uncover, the first statewide organization devoted to archeology was founded just fifty years ago. Before that, as early as 1790 and throughout the 1800s, private enthusiasts showed interest in collecting Native American "relics." Beginning in 1930 a number of well documented amateur excavations were conducted on prehistoric sites in Manchester and along the Merrimack River. The birth of the NHAS in 1947 provided a central body where professional archeologists, enthusiasts and the merely curious could work together, preserving NH's past. There were 48 members by 1950 when annual dues were only a dollar. Back then, excavators might even have taken home the artifacts they collected! Today, a fully scientific approach is in place. Under the leadership of Howard Sargent, Eugene Winter and others, the society grew and established itself as a dependable professional organization, both for its field work and annual publications that now form the key data on New Hampshire archeology. In 50 years , NHAS members have conducted scores of field studies and frequently combined forces with NH colleges, the state university, and others. With the onset of state environmental legislation, and with the assistance of the NHAS, a position of NH state archeologist was created in 1976. That, in turn, led to the formation of a state-funded field school nicknamed "
