Reaching the Next Generation
Marilyn Eisenwine, Education Committee, and Pam Wheat, Executive Director TAS members have a great opportunity to introduce archeology to youth of today through the BSA merit badge program. The requirements provide a format to convey scientific perspective, to advocate preservation ethics and to provide leadership for future decision-makers. When we asked members of the txarch listserv to respond, we learned that the following people have worked with approximately 100 scouts during the past year (2001). Doug Boyd and Gemma Mehalchick lead Troop 513 from Austin in excavations at Fort Hood. They were assisted by Stephanie Bandy. Gavin Smith and Nick Trierweiler. Marvin Glasgow reported that the Tarrant County Archeological Society worked with Troop 265 from Fort Worth at the Eastland Boles Ranch. Jim Blanton, Mark Cohen, John Yates, Max Ratheal and Brenton Thompson assisted. Alan Skinner also served as counselor for a troop from Dallas. Donald Turner has hosted several troops near Waco. The Fort Bend Archeological Society and the Houston Archeological Society provided field work at the Lamar Homestead for a program initiated by the Houston Museum of Natural Science. Paul Spana, Mitzi Wheeless, Tommy Nuckols, Dick Greg and others conduct Saturday sessions at least twice a year. Maureen Brown introduced numerous scouts to lab work at the Fort St. Louis Archeological Project in Victoria. Lenny Voellinger is a counselor in Austin who conducts weekend long merit badge clinics. Louis Pinky Robertson serves as a counselor in Region 2. Also, TAS member Gary Moore reports that he serves as a counselor in Lyons, Colorado.

Archeology: Study of the human past through the things left behind by humans. Arrowhead: An arrowhead is the same thing as an arrow point. It is the sharp tip of an arrow, the part that spears the target. In prehistoric times arrow points were made out of stone. In more recent times, most arrow points were made of metal. Arrowheads were attached to the end of a wooden or cane shaft, using srong fiber or leather cording and sometimes mastic (glue) to hold them in place. Arrowheads, or arrow points. Artifact: Something made or used by a person such as tools, containers, and weapons, as well as the bits and pieces (debris) left over from making these things. Archeologists often learn just as much from tiny, broken pieces as they do from whole artifacts. Even an animal bone can be an artifact if it has human teeth marks or cut marks on it from a tool like a knife.. Atlatl: Short, hand-held piece of wood used as a lever to "throw" or propel a dart or light spear. This is an Aztec word pronounced "at-lat-til" or "at-til-lat-il".

I recently ran across Doctor Paradox (a.k.a. Barb ). She creates very funky, fun, and creative sample-loop-based music using Ableton Live and other tools for the Mac.
I recently spoke with her about CC licensing, found art in remixes, and music in general. Apparently I caught her in the middle of reading Larry Lessig's The Future of Ideas , so she had a lot of good things say on the matter, not the least of which is the idea that: "all art is found art to some degree. Ideas have origins and everything is fundamentally connected." She sees CC licensing as a part of the re-connecting of art to what it is meant to be, an organic part of everyday lifestyle: "Even as recently as a few decades ago, music was still something people did in their homes to entertain themselves, their families, and friends. Now in the midst of a radical technological revolution, we are starting to have access to the tools we need to craft music in our own vision, according to our own philosophies." "For me, the dream and vision of Creative Commons is that by making an enormous amount of high-quality art available to society, our culture's demand for, and appreciation of art itself is bound to increase."
