  • WHAT IS ANTHROPOLOGY
"Anthropology"from the Greek anthropos ("human") and logia ("science") is the scientific study of humankind, from its beginnings millions of years ago to the present day. Its subject matter is both exotic (initiation rites of the Ganda of Uganda) and commonplace (anatomy of the human hand). Its focus is both sweeping and microscopic. Anthropologists may study the environmental impact of a new industry, the folklore of West Virginia, primate disease patterns, prehistoric cultures in North Carolina, or secret societies. A common thread links these vastly different projects. The common goal is to advance knowledge of who we are and how we came to be that way. Because the subject matter of anthropology is so broad, an undergraduate major in anthropology is part of a broad liberal arts background for men and women interested in any career, including law, environmental studies, government, business, international relations, medicine, and in just being a well-educated citizen. With the current intensity of global actions and interactions and the increasing cultural diversity of our own society, anthropology becomes even more relevant to our lives. In these times of narrow specialization, anthropological study is refreshingly broad. This focus on comprehensive breadth is especially valuable to students seeking to develop expertise in planning, decision-making, and management. Anthropology's scope and intellectual perspective prepares students to make objective, far-sighted decisions at the professional level in any career field, either at home or abroad.

The Undergraduate Anthropology Program emphasizes the commitment of this department to four-field anthropology, providing exposure to Ethnology, Archeology, Linguistic and Biological Anthropology. As a discipline, anthropology investigates both the biological and the sociocultural aspects of humanity in all its diversity. This holistic approach serves Anthropology's intellectual goal to achieve a comprehensive and comparative understanding of humanity.
Concentrations in Anthropology The Department of Anthropology offers two undergraduate concentration programs, Anthropology and Anthropology/Zoology, a joint program with the biology department. A third concentration, Social Anthropology is a joint program whose home department is Sociology. It is designed to acquaint students with both sociological and anthropological perspectives, theories and methods. Its focus is united by these fields' joint interest in social organization and culture. Interested students should contact the Sociology Department and may also speak with the general anthropology advisor.
The Anthropology Concentration Within the anthropology concentration students may specialize in one of the sub-disciplines: ethnology (cultural anthropology), archeology, linguistic anthropology or biological anthropology. However, students are required to take course-work in each of the four fields and are encouraged to view their specialization within the context of culture theory and the field as a whole.

IRAQI MUSEUM SPECIALISTS RECEIVE GRANT TO STUDY IN THE U.S.
Sunday, February 22 – Today a group of Iraqi museum professionals departed Baghdad for the United States, where they will participate in a five-week, intensive Cultural Heritage Institute and practicum.
The need to protect and conserve cultural heritage unites all countries. The Cultural Heritage Institute for Iraq aims to prepare the next generation of Iraqi stewards and to forge ongoing partnerships between Iraqi and American institutions and colleagues.
“These young professionals represent the future for museums in Iraq,” observes John Russell, Deputy Senior Advisor for Culture for the CPA, who consulted on the development of the Institute. “This unique program gives them an opportunity to see how other collections work, meet colleagues in a variety of museum disciplines in the US, and bring ideas back to their own museums throughout Iraq.”
The Cultural Heritage Institute for Iraq is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The five-week program is provided through a grant to the Council of American Overseas Research Centers, in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution. The Institute will provide these Iraqis with the opportunity to build their professional skills in order to contribute to the renewal of Iraq's cultural heritage and institutions.
