Individual topics to be examined include the cities and cemeteries of Etruria, the origins of the city of Rome, the typical Roman town, Roman architecture (palaces, ports, aqueducts, roads, baths, amphitheatres, circuses), sculpture, mosaics, wall painting, and portraiture. There are no prerequisites for the course. The format of the course consists of three illustrated lectures per week and a discussion section. The requirements are a midterm and a final examination which will include material covered in the lectures. (Albertson) 427/Hist. of Art 427. Pompeii: Its Life and Art. (3). (HU).

Section 001 – The Literate Imagination. This course explores the role of literacy (reading and writing) in our lives, throughout history, and in different cultures. To accomplish this we read autobiographies and historical accounts as well as visit such campus resources as the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology and the Rare Book Room. (Keller-Cohen) 112. The purpose of this course is to explore past and current directions in both theoretical and practical aspects of second/foreign language learning and teaching. The course will examine a number of language learning/teaching paradigms and focus on the changing forms and functions of methodology, technique and approach as the emphasis of language pedagogy has shifted from teacher directed, drill and pattern practice to learner focused, task based instruction. Students will have an opportunity to reflect upon and analyze their own language learning experiences and begin to critique and understand the instructional needs of varying language learning populations. The flower, paleontologists tell us, is an ancient innovation in the endless struggle of adaptation and survival; the earliest fossil flowers date to some 120 million years ago, long after the arrival of other forms of plant life (and, for that matter, insects). Their arrival heralded a new way for plants to go forth and multiply that was so successful that countless animal and insect species now depend on flowers for food, and flowering plants have spread across the face of the earth. "We know that flowers are beautiful," writes essayist Sharman Apt Russell in this lyrical exploration of the flowering world. "We forget that they are also essential." In fact, the more we learn about them, the more essential the 250,000 known species of flowering plants appear to be to modern life. Scientists are only now beginning to understand the complex role of flowers in ecosystems, and their studies have turned up surprising discoveries (such as the fact that a single flower can produce more than a hundred chemical compounds, and that plants like the alpine pennycress and sunflower can remove toxic chemicals from earth and water). Russell takes us to laboratories and academic conferences, as well as sun-drenched fields and greenhouses, to relate the science and lore of flowers. She also warns that, with one in three species in the United States alone already at risk, flowers may well prove to be among the first victims of a mounting wave of extinctions.

Picturing Evolutionary Trees
Common Descent Described Graphically
Family Trees, Cladograms, Phylogenies, Charts of Ancestry Graphic by Mark A. Klinger, Carnegie Museum of Natural History, Pittsburgh I have loved Mark Klinger's painting of the primate family tree ever since I stumbled across it while making a series of pages covering the world of primates. It shows representative species of Lemurs, Prosimians, New and Old World Monkeys and the Great Apes, including humankind. There is no timeline illustrated and the branching is not intended to convey a precise picture of lines of descent. It is fine art where form and color balance is as important as any scientific details. Adding a Gibbon swinging from branch-to-branch is unnecessary. This illustration was created to help publicize the opening of the new primate facility at the zoo in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I think of it is an artistic rendering where the branches flowing to the right and left are kept in balance. The candelabra-like design correctly shows the branching of chimps and humans from a common ancestor after the branching of our clade from the ancestor shared with gorillas.

It's just great The book is just great! I used the source code from the CD-ROM for various image processing projects. The algorithms are also very practical if you have to deal with images. The code is neat and ready to compile and run. Also this book is good on the description of image process and image analysis algorithms. I read the whole book and use it as a reference during my programming. It sits in my bookshelf and I use it almost everyday. I recommend anybody who wishes to do serious image programming to have this book. It's just great! (if you want my comments in english please send me an e-mail to innovacl@vtr.net) Practical is the Word The title says it all. This book was meant to be used. It is organized around a series of transformations that are performed on an image in going from the raw, captured form to usable result. Each step is well identified so you can go directly to the part you need. The methods and routines used are the author's choices, but they give enough information so you can dig deeper if you suspect you may have special needs.

The expectations for the quality of the projects go up for 7th grade, but I know that every student is capable of doing a great job on these reports. In my experience, the best ingredient for success in all projects is to start it early, and do the project in phases; your child should set up a schedule well in advance of the due date, and not start the project 3 days before the due date! For instance, students could set up a schedule of reading so many pages of their book a week: set a date to have the rough draft done by: a date to finish their map posters or models, etc. I am always happy to take some time to look over a rough draft and give some advice or guidance.

Sixty Weeks of Wordy Incoherence Main July 31, 2001 I like the idea of I like the idea of Heather Champ's Rabbit, Rabbit dictum. This appeals to me all the more because of my dream Sunday night: I was trying to get to another section of the museum, across a big room which had been beautifully and carefully carpeted with live grass. But there were these three big, black rabbits not cute little cuddle-riffic thingies, but big, buck rabbits not unlike the powerful beast Gerald holds in that scene from Women in Love These rabbits kept getting in the way, pulling at my ankles trying to trip me up. They weren't dangerous per se, but stubborn, powerful, and a little unsettling. I finally got out of the room, and into the big gallery where I had to sneak past the horrible, ceramic Sphinx. Posted by B T at 04:22 PM July 30, 2001 Pointless Elaboration Time A conversation Pointless Elaboration Time
A conversation with literary smart guy Gary left me feeling I was too hard earlier on Mr. Myer, particular with that last crack. He does, Gary reminds me, make some awfully good points about some awfully overrated writers. And it may be true that his article's excesses the one-note bray and lack of a coherent picture of a literary approach we should prefer don't invalidate the salutary dope-slap he delivers to writers who lean on effects not backed up by any substance. So, I don't mean to undercut him unfairly. But he has the burning eyes of the critical zealot, and he froths a bit around the jaws, and in the end, I wanted to shout "Okay, okay! I don't like William Golden either! Now, will you please give me my car keys back?"
