In addition to the opportunities for plant study and observation, the Arboretum provides a unique site for observing resident and migratory birds throughout the year. The ever changing habitats among the maturing ornamental plants provide food, nesting sites, and stopping points for the common and uncommon songbirds and raptors throughout the year.

Just north of the Eastside Marketplace mall, cross streets are Mountain View Drive and Harold Street. This is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Associates. As always, it will feature a great assortment of hardy perennials, some woody trees and shrubs from the arboretum (including a selection of lilacs), and new for this year, a selection of new perennials from Terra Nova Nursery.

SUMMER CONCERT
Arboretum
Date TBA (usually held in mid July)
This is an acoustic concert performed in the arboretum, usually on an evening early in the week in mid July. In the past the musicians have set up at the north end of the upper pond, with the audience sitting on the grass around and above the musicians. Somehow the weather has always cooperated, and the concert has made for a beautiful evening in the Arboretum. The audience often bring picnics and folding chairs or blankets for more comfortable seating.

We spend a great deal of time carefully evaluating potential links that we feel are valuable to our customer...both botanical and horticultural. We think this will better enable gardeners to sort through the myriad of useless information and move right to the sites that are truly worthwhile. We welcome your input for other potential links, and hope you enjoy the sites we have selected. Chicago Botanic Garden
One of my favorite large scale botanic gardens, this is a must see, when you are in the windy city. Duke Gardens
Located in Durham, NC, Duke Gardens has long been a destination garden for visitors to the triangle region. In the last few years, an upgrade of the plantings have dramatically changed the face of this superb garden. Both the Asian Valley garden under the direction of curator Paul Jones, and the Bloomquist Native garden under the direction of curator Ed Steffek are a must see! A visitor center is also slated for construction in 2000. The Holden Arboretum
Visit the largest arboretum in the United States, just east of Cleveland, Ohio. The prime emphasis here is a superb collection of woody plants, but there is certainly much more to see.

    The Arboreta:
"If you are thinking a year ahead, sow a seed. If you are thinking ten years ahead, plant a tree. If you are thinking one hundred years ahead, educate the people." Chinese Poet, 500 BC The Howard County Arboreta are arboreta without walls: there are no boundaries, no fences, no admission charges. We live in an ecologically rich environment with an extraordinary variety of native trees. To this abundance developers, county planners, landscape artists and individual homeowners have added a wonderful assortment of exotic species. In part, an arboretum is a collection of trees in an environment dedicated to education: teaching about the natural environment, raising conciousness about the impact each of us has on that environment. In Howard County we already have the trees and natural wooded areas. The arboretum program adds tags, interpretive signs, and other educational services to these abundant resources, enhancing their value to the entire community. The arboretum program is based on our conviction that an understanding of the importance of our local ecosystem is fundamental to having effective environmental programs. Becoming familiar with that ecosystem, learning the names of the trees, is one pathway to that more complete understanding.
