A classical as well as modern language with a long cultural legacy, Arabic has been language in world history for more than 1500 years. One can hardly overestimate the importance of the language in contemporary world culture and commerce. Over 250 million people speak one or more types of Arabic in what is known as the "Arab World". Countless others in Asia, Africa, Europe, South America and North America either speak Arabic as a first or second language, or use it as part of their daily religious observances. It is one of only six official languages at the United Nations and is regarded as a "critical language" by the United States government. The language is also the centerpiece of Binghamton University's program in Near Eastern Studies, and an important component of the affiliated program in Middle Eastern and North African Studies ( MENA ). In addition to the Arabic major or minor, which can include courses in both Standard and dialectal Arabic (e.g. Egyptian or Moroccan), the program in Near Eastern Studies offers courses in literature as well as special topics courses dealing with key issues in Arabic and Islamic civilization, past and present. The flexible nature of the program, and in particular the Independent Studies option, allows it to offer a wide range of courses catering to the needs of majors as well as students from other departments, whether graduate or undergraduate.

Historical background
Knut Tallqvist (1865-1949), Professor of Oriental literature from 1898 to 1933, was an eminent Assyriologist, but in the 1890s he also collected material on Spoken Arabic and Arabic folklore. After his retirement from the chair he started a Finnish translation of the Qur'an, which was continued by Armas Salonen (1915-1981), Professor of Assyriology, and completed by Jussi Aro (1928-1983), Professor of Semitic languages from 1965 to 1983. Aro, too, started his academic career as an Assyriologist, but after his appointment to the chair turned increasingly to studies of Arabic. In the field of Arabic linguistics, he published a study on the dialect of ez-Zreriyye. He also wrote several books in Finnish on different aspects of the cultural history of the Middle East. Other Finnish Assyriologists have also contributed to Arabic and Islamic studies. Thus in 1943, Harri Holma (1886-1954), then Finnish Ambassador to the Vatican, published a biography of the Prophet Muhammad in Finnish; later on it appeared in Swedish as well as in French (Mahomet, Paris 1946). In 1979-80 Erkki Salonen (b. 1930), Docent of Assyriology, published studies on the dialects of Gaza and Shirqat (Assur). The main field of Aapeli Saarisalo (1896-1986), Professor of Oriental literature from 1935 to 1963, was biblical archaeology, but his publications, too, include a monograph on Arabic studies, titled Songs of the Druzes (1932).

NES investigates the languages, history, cultures, literature and geography of the region now known as the Middle East, but referred to as the Near East for studies of the pre-Christian era. This region includes the Arab world, Turkey, Iran and Israel, and ranges from Morocco on the Atlantic Ocean to the Persian Gulf. NES offers programs leading to the Bachelor of Arts (BA), Master of Arts (MA) and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees with a major in Near Eastern Studies. Areas of MA fields include the Middle Eastern languages (Arabic, Persian and Turkish), cultures, history, politics and civilizations of the Islamic Middle East. Concentrations at the doctoral level are available in the fields of languages and literature, and Islamic studies. Students wishing to concentrate in history or politics at the doctoral level must apply to the appropriate disciplinary department upon completion of the MA. Introduction The Department regularly sponsors lectures, colloquia, and presentations by scholars from around the world. The Department has also organized two special events in response to the current world situation, the first a panel discussion after September 11 and the second a teach-in during the war with Iraq. In recent years, the Department has organized and hosted two major international conferences, with associated exhibitions in the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library and Sterling Memorial Library. The NELC Roundtable offers students an opportunity to rehearse public speaking about work in progress and receive feedback from faculty and peers in an informal atmosphere. 101. Introduction to Near Eastern Studies. (4). (HU). 201/Rel. 201. Introduction to World Religions: Near Eastern. (4). (HU). See Religion 201. 361. God and History in the Ancient Near East. (3). (Excl). This course, specifically for undergraduates, attempts a combination of approaches to Ancient Near Eastern History, one which stresses cultural and intellectual concerns against the backdrop of necessary political history. Beginning with the decipherment of the first writing in Mesopotamia and Egypt, the study explores the first organization of human life and activity in recorded history. The course is as much interested in "capturing" the human perspectives of the era (3000-323 B.C.) as in setting in order consecutive events. We shall be looking at politics, religion, subsistence issues, literature and world-views of ancient Semitic peoples. The course requires no previous background, and is introductory in nature. It will be taught through a combination of lecture and discussion techniques. 442/Hist. 442. The First Millennium of the Islamic Near East.
