Arabic Language, the language of written communication and of most formal, oral communication for speakers of Arabic dialects from Morocco to Iraq.
Before the spread of Islam and, with it, the Arabic language, "Arab" referred to any of the largely nomadic Semitic inhabitants of the Arabian Peninsula.
In modern usage, it embraces any of the Arabic-speaking peoples living in the vast region from Mauritania, on the Atlantic coast of Africa, to southwestern Iran, including the entire Maghrib of North Africa, Egypt and The Sudan, the Arabian Peninsula, and Syria and Iraq.
Among Muslims, Arabic is considered sacred since it is the language through which the Koran is believed to have been revealed. With the rise of Islam as a dominant religion after AD 622, Arabic became the most widespread of the living Semitic languages.
Classified as South Central Semitic, Arabic is related to Hebrew, spoken in Israel, and Amharic, spoken in Ethiopia, as well as to the ancient Semitic languages. The earliest written inscriptions in Arabic are found in the Arabian Peninsula and date from the early 4th century AD.
Today, Arabic is a unifying bond among Arabs, and it is the liturgical language of Muslims in Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indonesia, parts of Sub-Saharan Africa, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan.

Arabic script
Origin
The Arabic script evolved from the Nabataean Aramaic script. It has been used since the 4th century AD, but the earliest document, an inscription in Arabic, Syriac and Greek , dates from 512 AD. The Aramaic language has fewer consonants than Arabic, so during the 7th century new Arabic letters were created by adding dots to existing letters in order to avoid ambiguities. Further diacritics indicating short vowels were introduced, but are only generally used to ensure the Qur'an was read aloud without mistakes. There are two main types of written Arabic:
  • Classical Arabic - the language of the Qur'an and classical literature. It differs from Modern Standard Arabic mainly in style and vocabulary, some of which is archaic. All Muslims are expected to recite the Qur'an in the original language, however many rely on translations in order to understand the text of the Qur'an. Modern Standard Arabic - the universal language of the Arabic-speaking world which is understood by all Arabic speakers. It is the language of the vast majority of written material and of formal TV shows, lectures, etc.

    Introduction
As-Salaamu Alaikum , we present to you, absolutely the best books and cassettes for learning the Authentic Arabic of the Qur'an and Sunnah, these books are used in The Islamic University of Medinah al-Munawwara. In response to overwhelming request to learning the Arabic language, Dr. V. Abdur-Raheem, a well known and respected teacher in the Faculty of Languages came up with an integrated and step by step method of teaching reading, writing, and speaking to students from Western as well as Eastern backgrounds. The result of his endeavor are these Arabic Language Books. But this did not seem like enough for the student who was not in an Arabic country or environment. Making Arabic the first language was an endeavor that needed to be addressed in a non Arab country. This problem few address. With this in mind Sheik GM Shukri Jumuah found the solution and took the time to record the whole program and step by step and explain it as he goes along. He becomes the teacher the explainer the sound you become accustomed to. This was what completed the program where others had failed. We now present it to you as a complete program!! Subhanallah!!
THE PROGRAM The Program consist of books on Arabic grammar which help with .... reading, writing, and exercises which help with comprehension, along with Nusoos (higher Qur'anic Grammar and Terminology). They have all been written with the aim of taking the student step by step through the basics with an emphasis on the language of Qur'an and Hadeeth. The level 1 books Each lesson builds upon the student's abilities from previous lessons. Thus making it impossible to go on to another lesson without fully comprehending.

WHY SUMMER STUDY IN FEZ, MOROCCO?
Fez is located in Morocco, the western of three North African countries known to the Arabs as Jeziret al-Maghreb, or Island of the West". Morocco has an extensive coastline facing both the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, yet it is geographically dominated by the highest and most rugged ranges of the Atlas Mountain system of north-west Africa. Fez, founded in the 9th century, is a fascinating city where the old and new worlds coexist in perfect harmony. One of the four imperial cities of Morocco, Fez is famous for its Medina, its school-mosque, the Qarawiyyin, and its Arab-Andalusian gardens and architecture. The program is held at the Arabic Language Institute in Fez (ALIF) which was founded in 1983. ALIF is an affiliate of the American Language Center in Fez and has established itself as the pre-eminent institution in the Maghreb for the teaching of Arabic as a foreign language.

Toulouse, France, Friday 6 July 2001 Co-organized by:
    WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES AND DESCRIPTION:
The objective of the workshop was threefold.
    • First of all we wanted to bring together people who are actively involved in Arabic language and/or speech processing in a mono- or multilingual context, and give them an opportunity to report on completed and ongoing work as well as on the availability of products and core technologies. This should enable the participants to develop a common view on where we stand with respect to Arabic language processing. Secondly, we wanted to identify problems of common interest, and possible mechanisms to move towards solutions, such as sharing of tools and resources, moving towards standards, sharing and dissemination of information and expertise, adoption of current best practices, setting up joint projects and technology transfer mechanisms, etc. Third, we would like to enhance collaboration between the Arabic NLP community and the NLP community at large.
    PARTICIPATION AND PROCEEDINGS
