Aquaculture and Hatchery Assessment Reports: For the Pacific Fisheries Resource Conservation Council (PFRCC), in 2002 and 2003, DKE, working with Dovetail Consulting, prepared a report entitled "Making Sense of the Aquaculture Debate," which assessed and evaluated the impacts of BC salmon aquaculture on the province's wild salmon resource. In March 2004, DKE completed, with Dovetail, Allen Wood Consulting and Vicki Maloney, a similar report, "Making Sense of the Hatchery Debate." It assessed the impacts of hatcheries and other enhancement activities on BC's wild salmon. Both reports are available at www.fish.bc.ca BC Seafood Industry Summits: For the BC Seafood Alliance (BCSA), an umbrella trade association representing 14 specialty seafood organizations, DKE planned and organized the first annual BC Seafood Summit in 2001, for 100 high-profile invitees. In 2002, the firm provided similar services for Seafood Summit II, which included workshops and presentations focusing on the issue of fisheries co-management. Most recently, DKE assisted with the planning and organization of Seafood Summit III, which was held in January 2004. It dealt with the new Species at Risk Act (SARA), as well with the many other challenges facing BC's seafood industries. For more information, visit:

Fisheries and Aquaculture
Commercial harvesting activities in British Columbia, whether they be the commercial harvest of wild species, or the raising of aquatic species on farms, are a vital element of the economy of the province.
Aquaculture
Aquaculture is a significant contributor to the provincial economy, and most aquaculture jobs are located in coastal communities. With its climate, good water quality and sheltered bays, British Columbia's coastline is well suited for both finfish and shellfish aquaculture. In 2002, the farmgate value of the salmon, shellfish and trout sectors combined was $304.5 million. Farmed salmon is B.C.'s largest agricultural export product. There are three main species groups currently cultured in British Columbia waters:
Commercial Fisheries
Commercial fisheries are also a significant contributor to the provincial economy and the social fabric of numerous coastal communities. This industry includes the commercial harvesting of more than 80 different species of finfish, shellfish, and marine plants from both freshwater and marine environments. In 2002, the landed value of the salmon, groundfish, shellfish and herring fisheries combined was $363.8 million.

By Hans J. Marter
SUPER MARKET chain Morrisons is importing fish to Shetland alienating local producers and shoppers, and destroying local jobs. One of the first steps the retail giant undertook after taking over Safeway earlier this year was throwing out fresh fish delivered daily to its Lerwick store by local fish mongers McNab's Kippers. The move has now triggered angry reactions from islanders who were last night (Friday) questioning the logic behind stocking "inferior fish" from south when the isles itself could supply the freshest fish available. McNab's Kippers owner Rita McNab said she felt disappointed and offended about the way she had been treated. She had started supplying the retail giant three years ago as the result of ...
