Applied Mathematics
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, 80% of the fastest-growing jobs in the United States require some training after high school. Many of these jobs require a strong basis in math and science. Mathematics engages critical thinking, abstract reasoning, and problem solving. Invididuals can use these skills throughout their lifetime for higher learning and many different careers. The WorkKeys Applied Mathematics assessment helps current and potential employees measure the math skills they have against those the workplace requires. This assessment measures the skill people use when they apply mathematical reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving techniques to work-related problems. The test questions require the examinee to set up and solve the types of problems and do the types of calculations that actually occur in the workplace. This test is designed to be taken with a calculator. A formula sheet that includes all formulas required for the assessment is provided. While individuals may use calculators and conversion tables to help with the problems, they still need to use math skills to think them through.

Scientific Applications
We develop physical-mathematical models, computational methods, and scientific applications software, with specialization in x-ray physics applications. Our best-known work has been in the area of quantitative chemical analysis by x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF).
Our principal off-the-shelf software package is XRF11, which accounts for matrix absorption and indirect fluorescence in XRF analysis by using fundamental parameters of the elements in a detailed model of the experimental arrangement. The simulation is adjusted automatically to conform to whatever standard reference materials are available, whether a full suite of standards or just a single multi-component standard.
Our XRF software for elemental analysis has been used in hundreds of labs in over thirty countries. Other programs, many of which we developed for specific x-ray spectrometer and x-ray diffractometer manufacturers, also are in widespread use.

ICES Mission To provide the infrastructure and intellectual leadership for developing outstanding interdisciplinary programs in research and graduate study in the computational sciences and engineering and in information technology.
The Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences (ICES), formerly known as TICAM, is an organized research center created to function as an interdisciplinary research center for faculty and graduate students in computational sciences and engineering, mathematical modeling, applied mathematics, software engineering, and computational visualization. Organizationally, ICES reports to the Vice President for Research, and draws faculty from fifteen participating academic departments. The Institute currently supports five research centers and numerous research groups, but new research units in distributed and grid computing, computational biology, biomedical science and engineering, computational materials research, and many others are planned over the next 4 years. It also supports the CAM Program, a graduate degree program leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Computational and Applied Mathematics.

The Mathematical Modeling and Analysis Group (T-7) combines the strengths of applied mathematicians, mathematical physicists and numerical analysts to derive, analyze and solve mathematical models of complex problems. Its mission is to conduct forefront basic and applied research in mathematical modeling and analysis, provide theoretical leadership and support for the Laboratory and other programs of national interest, and to furnish an effective interface with academic science. In accordance with this mission, T-7 maintains its multidisciplinary, but highly mathematically oriented character, by supporting a strong applied research effort that is grounded in basic research. The applied mathematicians in T-7 have made substantial contributions in solving large systems of linear and nonlinear equations, in the theory, and numerical solution nonlinear partial differential equations, in modeling the long-time predictability of ocean dynamics, in nonlinear optical transmission lines, in the applications of wavelets and homogenization to multiscale problems, and in deriving mathematical models for disease transmission. EJAM is a flourishing journal for original work in areas of mathematics in which an understanding of the application requires the use of new and interesting mathematical ideas. The advent of powerful user-friendly computer codes in science and industry has increasingly led research workers to pose their problems in mathematical terms. Such activity frequently leads to a need for new mathematical analysis at a high level. EJAM focuses on this area of mathematics inspired by real-world applications, at the same time fostering the development of theoretical methods with broad areas of applicability.
EJAM is published by Cambridge University Press . The links to the left will take you to the main EJAM website , maintained by CUP. The editors can be contacted at : ejam@maths.ox.ac.uk

Information
For the past few years I have been working on an open source textbook. It contains material on calculus, functions of a complex variable, ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations and the calculus of variations. The text is still under development, but I believe that the current version will be useful for students and instructors. I am trying to distribute the text to as wide an audience as possible, so please tell all your friends and link to my main page By ``open source'' I mean that all of the source used in the creation of the text is available for download. The L A T E X source which comprises the text, the Mathematica notebooks and xfig files used to make the graphics, etc. are all available. I hope this will save instructors time, as they will be able to cut and paste portions of the text to make problem sets, solution sets and handouts.
