  • Sleep apnea is a breathing problem. It occurs when the upper airway is blocked during sleep. It causes pauses in breathing during sleep. It upsets normal sleep patterns. It is a serious condition that requires a doctor's treatment.
What causes sleep apnea?
  • Some children have facial structures that narrow the airway and cause sleep apnea. Sleep apnea can also happen when the throat and tongue relax during sleep and partly block the airway. Sleep apnea can occur in overweight children if they have too much tissue in their airway, making it narrow.
Who can get sleep apnea?
  • Both adults and children of all ages can have sleep apnea. It is most common between the ages of 3 and 6 years old. Some children are at higher risk. Overweight children, children with Down's syndrome, and children who have large tonsils are at higher risk.

Facts About...Sleep Apnea
What Is Sleep Apnea? Sleep apnea is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition that is far more common than generally understood. First described in 1965, sleep apnea is a breathing disorder characterized by brief interruptions of breathing during sleep. It owes its name to a Greek word, apnea, meaning "want of breath." There are two types of sleep apnea: central and obstructive. Central sleep apnea, which is less common, occurs when the brain fails to send the appropriate signals to the breathing muscles to initiate respirations. Obstructive sleep apnea is far more common and occurs when air cannot flow into or out of the person's nose or mouth although efforts to breathe continue. In a given night, the number of involuntary breathing pauses or "apneic events" may be as high as 20 to 30 or more per hour. These breathing pauses are almost always accompanied by snoring between apnea episodes, although not everyone who snores has this condition. Sleep apnea can also be characterized by choking sensations. The frequent interruptions of deep, restorative sleep often lead to early morning headaches and excessive daytime sleepiness.

CANPAP is a multi-centred randomized trial designed to explore a new non-pharmacologic therapy (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure - CPAP) for patients with Congestive Heart Failure and Central Sleep Apnea.
The CANPAP trial is currently recruiting in many large metropolitan cities in Canada. The trial began in January 1999 at six clinical sites in Canada. An additional four sites have since joined the trial. The clinical sites participating in the CANPAP trial are as follows:

http://www.aarc.org/patient_education/tips/apnea.html
Breathing disorders during sleep can lead to disturbances as commonplace as snoring. In more extreme cases, they may cause daytime hypersomnolence - the inability to stay awake during the day. The term apnea is used to describe a pause in breathing of 10 or more seconds. Sleep apnea is defined as having 30 or more apneic episodes per 8 hours of sleep. Sleep Apnea Syndrome (SAS) is characterized by numerous apneic episodes along with loud snoring and daytime sleeping. Daytime sleeping is a real problem on the job or while driving. Falling asleep at the wheel is a common problem for SAS patients and the cause of numerous accidents. Falling asleep at work frequently results in injury and/or job loss. Believe it or not, SAS can also lead to memory problems as well as difficulty concentrating and thinking. Anxiety and/or depression are frequent symptoms, as is irritable and aggressive behavior. Physically, a person with SAS may experience early morning headaches, sexual dysfunction, chronic tiredness, high blood pressure, and swelling of the extremities.
Treatment
There are numerous treatment possibilities available for people experiencing sleep apnea. Obese patients must lose weight. There is very little risk associated with medically supervised weight-loss programs, and the weight loss may offer additional physical benefits.

    Does snoring mean Sleep Apnea?
Aug 1999 Does anyone have experience with their children's sleep apnea? My son (2 yrs old) snores terribly and seems to have trouble getting the breathing technique down at night. He can't seem to breath through his nose and sometimes will wake himself up trying to get air through. Obviously he breathes through his mouth, but when he's not in a deep sleep, he struggles with how to do it. It's painful for me to watch, not to mention the loud snoring and flopping around on the bed when he wakes up. We sleep together, so I get to participate in these events. I did see an ear/nose/throat doctor who said he did have big tonsils and probably big adenoids, but would need an x-ray to know for sure. We didn't really get into the subject of surgery, but it may come to that. However, the doc said he may outgrow it too. I really don't want to face surgery, but of course I don't want my son to lose sleep either. Thanks.

    Apnea of Prematurity
    What is apnea of prematurity?
Apnea is a term for the absence of breathing for more than 20 seconds. It can occur in full-term babies but is more common in premature babies. The more premature the baby, the greater the chances that apnea will occur. Apnea may be followed by bradycardia - a decreased heart rate. When breathing slows, the heart rate also slows. A common term for apnea with bradycardia is "As and Bs." What causes apnea of prematurity? Apnea of prematurity may be due to a disturbance in the brain's breathing control center; this condition is called central apnea. With obstructive apnea, breathing stops because something is blocking the airway. Problems in other organs can also affect the breathing control center. Apnea of prematurity may not have an identifiable cause other than immaturity of the central nervous system. However, apnea of prematurity may have other causes. Some of these include:
    • bleeding or tissue damage in the brain respiratory disease infections gastrointestinal problems such as reflux (when the stomach contents move back up into the esophagus) too low or too high levels of chemicals in the body, such as glucose or calcium
