Idiopathic aplastic anemia
Definition: Idiopathic aplastic anemia is a failure of the bone marrow to properly form all types of blood cells.
Alternative Names: Anemia - idiopathic aplastic
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Idiopathic aplastic anemia is a condition that results from injury to the stem cell, a cell that gives rise to other cell types after it divides. Consequently, there is a reduction in all cell types red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets with this type of anemia , which is called pancytopenia. The cause of idiopathic aplastic anemia is unknown, but is thought to be an autoimmune process (the body reacting against its own cells). Causes of other types of aplastic anemia may be chemotherapy radiation therapy toxins , drugs, pregnancy, congenital disorder, or systemic lupus erythematosus
Symptoms arise as the consequence of bone marrow failure. Llow red blood cell count (anemia) leads to fatigue and weakness. Low white blood cell count (leukopenia) causes an increased risk of infection. Low platelet count ( thrombocytopenia ) results in bleeding, especially of mucus membranes and skin.

Secondary aplastic anemia
Definition: Secondary aplastic anemia is a failure of the bone marrow to form enough blood cells. All blood cell types are affected.
Alternative Names: Anemia - secondary aplastic; Acquired aplastic anemia
Causes, incidence, and risk factors: Secondary aplastic anemia results from injury to stem cells. Normal stem cells divide and differentiate into all blood cell types. Thus, when stem cells are injured, there is a reduction in red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
This condition can be caused by chemotherapy, drug therapy to suppress the immune system, radiation therapy, toxins such as benzene or arsenic, drugs, pregnancy, and congenital disorders. When the cause is unknown, it is then referred to as idiopathic aplastic anemia
The disease may be acute or chronic and is usually gets worse unless the cause is removed.

What is aplastic anemia?
Aplastic anemia occurs when the bone marrow produces too few of all types of blood cells: red cells, white cells, and platelets. A reduced number of red blood cells causes the hemoglobin (a type of protein in the red blood cells that carries oxygen to the tissues of the body) to drop. A reduced number of white blood cells causes the patient to be susceptible to infection. A reduced number of platelets can cause the blood not to clot as easily.

Aplastic Anemia is a rare bone marrow disorder characterized by decreased function of the bone marrow that results in abnormally low levels of all the cellular elements of the blood (pancytopenia). In some cases, the disorder may affect primarily single cell lines (i.e., red blood cells, white cells, or platelets).

Then she was diagnosed with the rare blood disease and soon found herself embarking on a long, tedious journey to maintain her health. Although her improvement has been slow and has had setbacks, it has progressed enough to encourage doctors who have been searching for better treatments for the disease. Her progress is attributed to the drug Neumega® (Oprelvekin), which Thompson, now 63, began taking when she joined an M. D. Anderson clinical trial in 2000. The trial was one of two pilot studies designed for patients with bone marrow failure diseases, including aplastic anemia. Because the drug is FDA approved and has seen some success, as in Thompson’s case, Neumega will be studied again at M. D. Anderson in a new Phase II clinical trial, which begins patient recruitment in January. This time the drug will be used only for aplastic anemia patients.

Aplastic anemia is a very rare blood disease in which the bone marrow stops producing enough blood cells, which includes red and white blood cells and platelets. In Thompson’s case her platelets were especially low. Platelets help the body control bleeding by clotting blood. Without it over time, a patient could begin to lose blood (bleeding from the rectum, coughing blood, nose bleeds) and eventually die.

Lindane has been classified as Group B2/C (probable/possible human carcinogen) (U.S. EPA, 1999c) and a cancer potency of 1.3 per mg/kg-d has been listed (HEAST, 1997). Lindane's related isomers, alpha and beta hexachlorocyclohexane, are classified as probable human carcinogens and have cancer potencies similar to that of lindane . In addition to tumors identified in experimental animals, human study data indicate that this chemical may cause aplastic anemia (U.S. EPA, 1993a). TOXICOLOGICAL PROFILE SUMMARIES FOR TARGET ANALYTES Aplastic Anemia Toxin Exposure By Lyle L. Sensenbernner, M.D. In many cases, aplastic anemia has been clearly linked to exposure to certain toxins, although in many cases it is unlikely that a specific case can be identified. Overall there are certain groups of substances which have been clearly shown to be causative agents for aplastic anemia. These include:
