Then along came the Palefaces. The Red Indians are no longer Red as that might imply Communism, athough their tribes were very communal - and still are on the reservations they've been 'preserved' on. Ironically, many Palefaces have since become Rednecks. But whichever way you look at it, judging people by color is very unwise. But before all this happened, the many native tribes of what was still to become America had all the space in what was their world. They made good use of it, living close to nature and treating life as a camping holiday with teepees and hunting lodges. There was so much in the way of free-range food, you left it alone until needed. Animals had powerful spirits and placation was necessary if you ate them. When corn came by courtesy of the deities, it was also given its due measure of respect. Heaven was the Happy Hunting Ground, much the same as Earth but with better weather.

    WHAT IS THIS ALL ABOUT?
Native Americans have lived throughout North America for thousands of years. This was long before Christopher Columbus sailed to the New World and named them "Indians". He had mistakenly thought he had reached his destination of India. We are going to discover what our world, the Southwestern United States, looked like during the time of Native Americans. Come along on a journey where you will discover different cultures and learn to look at your home in a new way. Each tribe had a distinct culture yet shared many of the same beliefs.
    WHAT WILL I DO?
You have the task to learn about the location of the tribes, types of homes, clothing, food, and beliefs and/or crafts of the Hopi, Navajo, Pueblo,Western Apache, and Zuni tribes. At the end of this unit you will have to decide to join a tribe and write about your life there. Which tribe would you like to join? Why? Activity 1 - Look at the map of the Southwestern United States. On this map you will find the locations of the 5 tribes you will be studying in this unit: Hopi, Navajo, Pueblo, Western Apache and Zuni. Click on the name of the tribe, a hand will appear, and read about the tribal ways of each tribe. When you finish reading about that tribe remember to use the BACK arrow to return to this page.

    Apache Tribe
by Todd Underwood The word "apache" comes from the Yuma word for "fighting-men" and from the Zuni word meaning "enemy." The Apache tribe consists of six subtribes: the Western Apache, Chiricahua, Mescalero, Jicarilla, Lipan and Kiowa. Each subtribe is from a different geographial region. It is possible, due to their nomadic nature, that several names were used to identify the same tribe. The Apaches are commonly known for their incredible endurance and warfare skills. First arriving in the Southwest sometime between A.D.1000 and 1400, the Apaches carved out a home on the south side of the Rocky mountains. As early as 1540, the Apaches confronted Coronado in eastern New Mexico and were called "vaqueros." By the 1600's, they were also living in Arizona. Between 1656 and 1675, the Apaches continuously raided Spanish Settlers and Pueblo Indians in what is now known as New Mexico. In 1680, their population was approximately 5000. In 1692, the Spaniards reconquered New Mexico and the Apaches were starting to make enemies. In 1723 the Comanche defeated the

These markers have very specific modes of inheritance and are relatively unique to populations with Native American Ancestry. There are 2 types of inheritance pattern categories that these markers follow, either a directly paternal linkage (i.e., male-to-male-to-male, etc.) or a directly maternal linkage (i.e., female-to-all her children.
