Anxiety is a normal experience. Moderate or high levels of anxiety can increase alertness and performance in particular situations. However, people who experience continuous or recurring fears, or episodes of intense fear can feel powerless to manage their symptoms and their lives can become severely restricted. Anxiety Disorders affect at least 12% of Australians at some time in their lives. The increasing demands and stress of everyday life means that anxiety has become a problem in our society. All indications are that stress related mental health issues, such as anxiety disorders and depression, will represent a growing area of need in Mental Health resources within the next few years. The five major anxiety disorders are Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety (sometimes referred to as Social Phobia), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). Other types of disorders are Specific Phobia and Separation Anxiety.

http://www.bu.edu/anxiety/gad.html
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Study The goal of the current study is to test the effectiveness of a promising new cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) for GAD. This new treatment, which is based on years of empirical research on the nature of worry in GAD, incorporates traditional elements of CBT with acceptance and mindfulness approaches to treatment. The goals of this new treatment include increasing mindful awareness of one's thoughts and feelings, encouraging acceptance of emotional experiences, and promoting action in valued areas of life. This study is funded The National Institutes of Mental Health and is directed by Drs. Lizabeth Roemer and Susan Orsillo. Individuals who have completed a comprehensive diagnostic interview at CARD and who have been diagnosed with GAD may be eligible for the study. These individuals will be contacted by project staff for a second, free assessment to confirm eligibility. Treatment consists of 16 weekly free individual therapy sessions with either a doctoral or doctoral candidate level clinician. Participants will be asked to practice new strategies and exercises (learned in therapy) as homework outside of the sessions. In addition, throughout treatment, assessment of changes in anxiety symptoms, quality of life, and other outcomes will be completed in order to assess treatment effectiveness.

The Child Anxiety Disorders Clinic (CADC) is a clinical/research specialty clinic of FDU’s Center for Psychological Services. The CADC specializes in the cognitive-behavioral assessment and treatment of anxiety and related disorders in children and adolescents. The clinic is staffed by licensed clinical child psychologists and doctoral students affiliated with the Ph.D. program in clinical psychology. The CADC provides comprehensive assessment and intervention services for children and adolescents, ages 3 to 17, and their families. Families may be self-referred, or referrals may be made through family physicians, schools, or mental health professionals.
INITIAL EVALUATION PROCEDURE
A comprehensive assessment is conducted by the staff and involves separate structured interviews with children and their parents. The interviews specifically assess anxiety and related problems and examine each child’s past and current psychological functioning. In addition, a number of paper and pencil questionnaires may also be administered to children, parents, and teachers (if appropriate) to provide further information on each child’s psychological functioning.

June 2004
Welcome to my website! Shy kid and Social Anxiety Disorder (formerly called Social Phobia) since teens, my Social Anxiety became pretty severe by late high school. At 26 I finally found out the name "Social Phobia" and that it was medically treatable. Substantial improvement in the quality of life is within the reach of most all with untreated Social Anxiety Disorder. Current research is being done to promote earlier diagnosis and treatment (onset in the childhood or teenage years is common).
A Recent Abstract on Social Anxiety Disorder:
Journal of Clinical Psychiatry 2001;62 Suppl 12:24-9
Comorbidity, Neurobiology, and Pharmacotherapy of Social Anxiety Disorder.
Pollack MH, Department of Psychiatry, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston 02114
Symptoms of Social Anxiety Disorder:
Social Anxiety Disorder is a persistent fear of one or more situations in which the person is exposed to possible scrutiny by others and fears that he or she may do something or act in a way that will be humiliating or embarrassing. It exceeds normal "shyness" when it leads to excessive social avoidance and substantial social or occupational impairment. Feared activities may include most any type of social interaction, especially small groups, dating, parties, talking to strangers, restaurants, etc. Physical symptoms include "mind going blank", fast heartbeat, blushing, stomach ache. Cognitive distortions are a hallmark, and learned about in CBT. Thoughts are often self-defeating and inaccurate.

Anxiety disorders can severely interfere with day-to-day life
Anxiety disorders are among the most common mental illlnesses in the UK. They cover everything from panic disorder, phobias and obsessive compulsive disorder to post-traumatic stress disorder. Each has its own particular symptoms and differs greatly from normal feelings of nervousness. What causes anxiety disorders and what are their symptoms? There are several possible reasons for anxiety disorders, including biological and environmental factors such as genetics, biochemical changes in the brain and traumatic life events. Symptoms may include:
  • Panic, fear, apprehension
  • Uncontrollable obsessive thoughts
  • Repeated flashbacks of traumatic experiences
  • Nightmares
  • Ritualised behaviour such as repeated hand-washing
  • Problems sleeping
  • Cold or sweaty hands
  • Palpitations
  • Shortness of breath
  • Inability to be still and calm
  • A dry mouth
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet
  • Upset stomach
  • Tense muscles
Often there appears to be no particular reason why symptoms occur since the feelings of panic are dissociated from events which are happening or about to occur.

Social Phobia: The Largest Anxiety Disorder Social Phobia (social anxiety disorder) is defined as the fear (anxiety) of being judged, criticized, and evaluated by other people. This fear is recognized as irrational by the individual; nevertheless, the fear of judgment in social situations persists. People who have social phobia usually find it difficult to be introduced to other people ("I wonder what they're thinking about me; I'll bet they don't like me"), attracting attention to the self or being the center of attention, being watched while doing something ("They don't like what I'm doing; I must be making a fool of myself"), and feeling insecure and self-conscious in most public settings. Life is difficult for the person with social phobia because they feel they do not fit in with every one else. Something is wrong with them. Therefore, it is easier to stay away and avoid all contact with people in social situations, whenever possible. Dr. Richard G. Heimberg of Temple University, the leading researcher of social phobia, notes that people with social phobia experience many negative life problems as a result of their social anxiety:
