Anxiety Disorders in Children and Adolescents
What are anxiety disorders? Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illnesses in America; they affect as many as one in 10 young people. Unfortunately, these disorders are often difficult to recognize, and many who suffer from them are either too ashamed to seek help or they fail to realize that these disorders can be treated effectively. What are the most common anxiety disorders?
  • Panic Disorder Characterized by panic attacks, panic disorder results in sudden feelings of terror that strike repeatedly and without warning. Physical symptoms include chest pain, heart palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, abdominal discomfort, feelings of unreality, and fear of dying. Children and adolescents with this disorder may experience unrealistic worry, self- consciousness, and tension. Obsessive-compulsive Disorder (OCD) Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Persistent symptoms of this disorder occur after experiencing a trauma such as abuse, natural disasters, or extreme violence. Symptoms include nightmares; flashbacks; the numbing of emotions; depression; feeling angry, irritable, and distracted; and being easily startled. Phobias Generalized Anxiety Disorder Chronic, exaggerated worry about everyday, routine life events and activities that lasts at least six months is indicative of generalized anxiety disorder. Children and adolescents with this disorder usually anticipate the worst and often complain of fatigue, tension, headaches, and nausea.

Anxiety Disorders
Generalized Anxiety Disorder G eneralized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is characterized by 6 months or more of chronic, exaggerated worry and tension that is unfounded or much more severe than the normal anxiety most people experience. People with this disorder usually expect the worst; they worry excessively about money, health, family, or work, even when there are no signs of trouble. They are unable to relax and often suffer from insomnia. Many people with GAD also have physical symptoms, such as fatigue, trembling, muscle tension, headaches, irritability, or hot flashes. Fortunately, through research supported by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), effective treatments have been developed to help people with GAD. How Common is GAD?
  • About 2.8% of the U.S. population (4 million Americans) have GAD during a year's time. GAD most often strikes people in childhood or adolescence, but can begin in adulthood, too. It affects women more often than men.
What Causes GAD?

Anxiety Disorders
Phobias E veryone feels anxious or uneasy from time to time. Your first day on a new job, planning for a long trip, going to the dentist....your palms sweat, you feel shaky, your heart pounds. Some anxiety helps to keep you focused on the job at hand. However, when your anxiety is so serious that it interferes with your work, leads you to avoid certain situations or keeps you from enjoying life, you may be suffering from a form of the most common type of mental disorder, an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorders are not just a case of "nerves." You can’t overcome an anxiety disorder just through willpower, nor can the symptoms be ignored or wished away. These disorders cause you to feel anxious most of the time, making some everyday situations so uncomfortable that you may avoid them entirely. Or, you may experience occasional instances of anxiety that are so terrifying and intense that you may be immobilized with fear. Although these conditions can be very frightening and disabling, they are also very treatable. It is important to recognize the symptoms and seek help. Specifically, Phobias afflict as many as 12 percent of all Americans. They are the most common psychiatric illness in women and the second most common in men over age 25. Phobias are not all the same. There are three main groups which include:

Anxiety Disorder
If you regularly experience ANY inappropriate anxiety, you have an anxiety disorder.
Anxiety disorders make sufferers experience high levels of anxiety when it isn't necessary. Anxiety is ONLY necessary when real danger exists but anxiety disorders are indescriminate. There are 5 main anxiety disorders: GAD General Anxiety Disorder
Panic Disorder
OCD Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
PTSD Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Phobias (most commonly social phobia or agoraphobia) The most common of these anxiety disorders are General Anxiety Disorder and Panic Disorder. Although conventional medicine list the other three disorders, OCD, PTSD and Phobias as separate anxiety disorders, I believe that these are symptoms of rather than separate conditions. I dislike the term Anxiety DISORDER because it implies illness and anxiety disorders aren't illnesses, they are behavioural conditions.
