What are anxiety disorders? Are they common?
Everybody knows what it's like to feel anxious - the butterflies in your stomach before a first date, the tension you feel when your boss is angry, the way your heart pounds if you're in danger. Anxiety isn't always a bad thing. It can help you cope with life's everyday stress. It makes you study harder for that exam, keeps you on your toes when you're making a speech, and helps you stay focused when looking for a job or asking for a raise. But if you have an anxiety disorder , this normally helpful emotion can do just the opposite. It can keep you from coping and can disrupt your daily life. Anxiety disorders aren't just a case of "nerves." They are serious illnesses that can grow worse when not treated. They are thought to be related to the biological makeup and life experiences of a person, and often run in families. Every year, more than 19 million American adults suffer from anxiety disorders. There are treatments for these disorders that can help people lead full and healthy lives. And, research is being done to find new ways to help people with anxiety disorders.

What is generalized anxiety disorder?
Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) is a real illness, called an anxiety disorder . It's not just simply worrying, and it can be treated to help a person have a healthy and full life. From time to time, we all have worries about our health, family, money, and work. But when a person has GAD, they worry all the time, even when nothing is wrong. A person with GAD always expects the worst will happen, can't relax, and feels tense most of the time. Aches and pains, plus feeling tired a lot, can also happen with GAD. Sometimes, though, the source of the worry is hard to pinpoint. Just the thought of getting through the day causes anxiety. It's important to know that when a person has this illness, it's not her or his fault. And, it's not something a person can just "snap out of." No one knows for sure what causes GAD. Most often GAD begins in childhood, but can start in an adult as well. More women than men have this illness. And, GAD may run in families.

http://www.reutershealth.com/wellconnected/doc28.html
Anxiety Disorders December 2001 WHAT ARE ANXIETY DISORDERS? Fear and stress reactions are essential for human survival. They enable people to pursue important goals and to respond appropriately to danger. In a healthy individual, the stress response (fight, fright, or flight) is provoked by a genuine threat or challenge and is used as a spur for appropriate action. [ See Box The Brain's Response to a Threat
An anxiety disorder, however, is an excessive or inappropriate aroused state characterized by feelings of apprehension, uncertainty, or fear. The word is derived from the Latin, angere , which means to choke or strangle. The anxiety response is often not attributable to a real threat; nevertheless it can still paralyze the individual into inaction or withdrawal. An anxiety disorder also persists, while a healthy response to a threat resolves once the threat is removed.
Anxiety disorders have been classified according to the severity and duration of their symptoms and specific behavioral characteristics. Categories include:
  • Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), which is long-lasting and low-grade.

47. Smoking May Lead To Anxiety Disorders In Adolescents And Young Adults
Recent research shows that tobacco products may cause anxiety, panic attacks and fear of leaving home.
http://www.nida.nih.gov/NIDA_Notes/NNVol16N1/Smoking.html
Research Findings Volume 16, Number 1 (March, 2001)
Smoking May Lead to Anxiety Disorders in Adolescents and Young Adults
Using a wealth of data obtained through a 25-year longitudinal study, NIDA-funded researcher Dr. Judith Brook of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, Dr. Patricia Cohen of Columbia University in New York, and their colleagues have documented adverse effects of smoking in several critical areas of functioning during young adulthood. Most recently, the team has reported a connection between tobacco use by adolescents and young adults and the likelihood that they will develop agoraphobia (fear of leaving home or of the outdoors), generalized anxiety disorder, or panic disorder. Analyzing data from their Children in the Community study, funded by NIDA and the National Institute of Mental Health, the researchers were able to separate the effects of smoking from the effects of age, gender, childhood temperament, alcohol and other drug abuse, and depression among the adolescents, as well as parents' smoking, education, and behavioral and/or mental health problems. The researchers interviewed 688 youths and their mothers in 1983, between 1985 and 1986, and again between 1991 and 1993. A total of 69 of the youths smoked heavily - at least 20 cigarettes every day - and experienced an anxiety disorder during adolescence, early adulthood, or both. Of these 69 youths, 29 (42 percent) began smoking before they were diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. The remaining 40 youths were split between those who were diagnosed with anxiety disorders before they reported heavy smoking (13, or 19 percent) and those who reported smoking and were diagnosed with anxiety disorders at the same interview session (27, or 39 percent).

Social Anxiety Disorder
It's more than just shyness Most people feel shy or self-conscious in social situations. Speaking in public, going on a job interview or even asking for a date can make anyone feel shy or anxious. The symptoms are familiar: your heart pounds, your hands tremble or you feel like you have "butterflies" in your stomach. But this type of anxiety is temporary, and once you get through the situation, life goes on as usual. If your anxiety about social situations is so severe that it disrupts your daily life and relationships to the point where you are sick with worry, you may have social anxiety disorder. Social anxiety disorder is an excessive, persistent fear of social or performance situations. GOAL! Achiever, Delta Burke

More than 19 million American adults suffer from depression annually and more than half of these individuals also have an anxiety disorder, such as generalized anxiety disorder or social anxiety disorder. Due to the social stigma surrounding these conditions, many people have accepted feeling sad, constantly tired, or overwhelmed as part of their lives. However, it doesn't have to be this way. GOAL! (Go On And Live!) is a national campaign designed to educate people about the emotional and physical symptoms of depression and anxiety disorders. The GOAL! campaign also aims to help people recognize that, with the right treatment, they can achieve remission (virtual elimination) of their symptoms and get back to being themselves. Since 2002, the GOAL! campaign has been providing hope to people suffering from depression and anxiety disorders, as well as to their friends and family. If the emotional and physical symptoms of depression and/or an anxiety disorder are interfering with your life, or the life of someone you love, you may find the information on this site about treatment options and resources to be helpful. Remember, there is life beyond depression and anxiety disorders, and with the right treatment, you or your loved one can Go On And Live!.
