A nxiety disorders, such as generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder and social phobia, are the most prevalent psychiatric disorders in the United States, and patients with these disorders are more likely to seek treatment from a primary care physician than from a psychiatrist. Patients with anxiety disorders are more likely than other patients to make frequent medical appointments, to undergo extensive diagnostic testing, to report their health as poor and to smoke cigarettes and abuse other substances. Anxiety disorders, particularly panic disorder, occur more frequently in patients with chronic medical illnesses (e.g., hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, irritable bowel syndrome, diabetes) than in the general population. Conversely, patients with anxiety disorders are more likely than others to develop a medical illness

But by the spring of 2001, the media were filled with news items urging people to watch for symptoms of irritability, fatigue, sweating and muscle tension. Subsequent medical reports described generalized anxiety disorder , or GAD, as leaving its victims paralyzed with irrational fears.

Self-Help Support Groups
Self-help and support groups for anxiety disorders are a way of empowering people to help themselves, and others, on the path to recovery. Participation in a self-help group can end the painful isolation of suffering alone with a disorder that is disruptive and debilitating for the individual and those people around him/her. An effective group will help members achieve recovery through mutual support as well as provide them with updated information about causes and treatment, eliminating some of the myths about anxiety disorders. The ADAA Self-Help Support Group Network is available in nearly all states and various countries around the world. The list of support groups is provided as a service of the ADAA, but it does not represent an evaluation or recommendation by the association. Furthermore, the ADAA does not endorse the use of a self-help group as a substitute for proper diagnosis and treatment. Please check with your treatment provider about the benefits of joining a support group as part of one's overall treatment regimen.

Do You Know the Signs of an Anxiety Disorder?
According to recent studies, anxiety disorders cost the United States $46.6 billion in 1990, nearly one-third of the nation's total mental health bill of $147 billion. We are not referring to dollars spent on effective treatments, but rather to the costs of worker absenteeism, job loss and alcohol/substance abuse.
National Anxiety Disorders Screening Day is May 1 People can help themselves by recognizing the signs of anxiety disorder. These can include:
  • Endless checking or rechecking actions.
  • A constant and unrealistic worry about everyday occurrences and activities.
  • Fear and anxiety that appear for no apparent reason.
"People need to talk about what's bothering them," said Dr. Dorothy Cantor, former president of the American Psychological Association . "Anxiety often comes about when people hold in their fears until they begin to feel anxiety. People shouldn't wait until they're paralyzed with anxiety before they seek some kind of consultation.
"They should talk with friends and loved ones about their feelings. If problems remain, they should talk to someone who can help. People shouldn't be ashamed of what they're feeling. We all experience a wide range of feelings and there is no shame in talking about them."
