Ants in Lawns
There are many species of ants which occur in lawns and other turfgrass areas. Most ants do not require controls and are considered beneficial. However, ants may become a nuisance by constructing mounds or small hills in the lawn or by invading the home from the yard in search of food. The ants found in Iowa lawns are not biting or stinging pests. The fire ants of the southern U.S., well known for their aggressive behavior and painful stings, are not present in Iowa. Also, the noted mound building ants of the eastern U.S. that build ant hills several feet in height are not found in Iowa, although our local ants may build mounds several inches high and 12 to 18 inches in diameter if left undisturbed for a long period of time. Ants are social insects that live in well-organized colonies. Nearly all of the ants in a colony are the wingless sterile females, called workers, typically seen on or around an ant hill. They do the work of the colony which includes enlarging and maintaining the nest, caring for the queen's offspring (larvae that reside within the nest) as well as search for food and bring it back to the nest. In the spring or fall ant colonies may produce winged males and females called swarmers. These disperse from a wellestablished nest to begin new colonies. Ant Mounds . Soil nesting ants construct mounds or small hills by bringing granulated soil to the surface from the nest below. These mounds may be unsightly, may cause lawn unevenness, and if large, may smoother out the surrounding grass.

Carpenter Ants In the House
Carpenter ants do not eat wood but instead construct their nests in wood such as hollow trees, stumps, logs, posts, landscaping timbers, and the lumber used in homes and other structures. Nests are made by chewing an interconnecting series of tunnels and cavities. Wood is removed as coarse sawdust-like material that is pushed from the nest. The sawdust may include other debris such as dead ants and parts of insects and other food. Carpenter ants found indoors in the winter usually come from nests somewhere within the house. Ants found indoors during spring or summer could be invaders wandering in from outdoors or they may be foragers from a nest in the wall or ceiling. While there is no easy way to determine the source, it does pay to check carefully before making any treatment. Locating the source of carpenter ants is as important as it is difficult. It is especially difficult if only a few ants are seen at one time. Our best suggestion is to spend time observing ants to see if you can detect a pattern of movement. In spring and summer carpenter ants are more active at night and observations after sunset, with a flashlight on the outside and inside of the house may give an indication of the source. Presence of sawdust is an important clue in locating ant nests. Carpenter ant control can be a do-it-yourself project or a job for a professional pest control operator. Shop around and compare prices and services when selecting a pest control service. Under most circumstances, the best carpenter ant control comes by locating and treating the nest (indoors or out). The practical alternative indoors is to treat room edges, cracks and crevices in the areas where foraging workers are abundant and hope to reduce the population through gradual elimination of the foragers. Homeowners should use ready-to-use products such as "ant and roach killer" or boric acid dust.

Forest and Bird's Campaign The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry should respond to this potentially serious threat by declaring the Argentine ant an Unwanted Organism under the Biosecurity Act and developing a National Pest Management Strategy. Ongoing nationwide monitoring is needed to detect where the ants are present, and isolated infestations (e.g. Wellington, Nelson and Christchurch) should be eradicated before they have the chance to spread. Baiting operations and ongoing monitoring are needed at the Auckland 'epicentres' (e.g. plant nurseries and carparks in heavily infested areas) to prevent further spread of Argentine ants to other regions. Baiting operations are needed at other Auckland problem sites (e.g. landfills and reserves) and public education is required on what to do and who to contact about Argentine ants. In future, prompt action must be taken to eradicate new pests when they are first discovered in New Zealand.

Space ANTS: Futuristic Probes to Cruise Asteroid Belt

SAN FRANCISCO – NASA may mimic the ant in its future efforts to explore the belt of asteroids that lies between Mars and Jupiter, a resource-rich region that astronauts might tap as humans move out in the solar system. A small group working at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center has proposed launching a massive colony of miniature spacecraft – using social insect-inspired artificial intelligence – to spend several years prospecting among perhaps 1,000 of the space rocks. "The idea is to have a totally autonomous swarm you can send out to explore multiple bodies," said Steven Curtis, a scientist at the Greenbelt, Maryland, NASA field center. Called ANTS – that’s "Autonomous Nano Technology Swarm" – the fleet of buggy spacecraft would cruise independently to the Asteroid Belt. Each futuristic probe would hoist its own solar sail to capture the minute pressure of the sun’s rays and push it along on its journey. Images
Asteroid 951 Gaspra is shown here as a mosaic of two images taken by Galileo about 3300 miles away on 10/29/1991. About 11 miles long, its irregular shape is presumed to be derived from a much larger asteroid shattered in a catastrophic col lision.

SUBFAMILY ECITONINAE
The New World Ecitoninae, together with the Old World Dorylinae, are the legionary ants, par excellence . Their colonies may reach enormous size (up to 2.2xl0 for Old World Dorylus and up to 10 for Eciton ; Brian, 1965). Colonies are nomadic. The bizarre queens lay enormous numbers of eggs at regular intervals and when the brood reach a certain level of development, the entire colony relocates to a new site. There is never a true nest, as such, but only a temporary bivouac. The available information on army ant life has been summarized by Gotwald (1982).
The Ecitoninae were, until recently included within the Dorylinae, a group now considered to be restricted to the Old World tropics and subtropics (Snelling, 1981b; Gotwald, 1982). Wheeler and Wheeler (1985) have argued in favor of lumping all the legionary ants back into the single subfamily Dorylinae partly because that "... at least is well supported by larval evidence," even though they had earlier stated that larval characters (or their lack) should not take precedence over adult characters. As additional evidence they cited Kistner's (1972) conclusion that

Teamwork In Genetic Programming
I have developed a Genetic Program that will evolve programs that will emulate the food collection behavior of ants. The teamwork.shtmlect of my GP comes into play when the ants must work together to solve a problem.
The ant programs are written in a special language developed for this application. The language consists of ant actions such as: MOVE FORWARD, PICK UP FOOD...
This genetic program consists of an an intepreter to execute the special ant language, a lex/yacc compiler to read, write, and convert this ant language, and a display process that allows the user to view the ants in action as they collect food.
