Leaf-cutting Ants
Atta cephalotes
by Jim Wetterer
I have studied leaf-cutting ants for more than ten years, working mostly at La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica.
As you might expect, many leaf-cutting ants cut the leaves of trees. Here, workers of one type of leaf-cutting ant called Atta cephalotes cut the leaf of a grapefruit tree. Workers of different size do different jobs. While the larger workers cut the leaf, the smaller workers guard them against attack by flies. As in all ants, the workers are all female.
When the larger worker finishes cutting a leaf fragment, smaller workers climb onto the leaf fragment to guard the larger worker. Leaf-cutting ants can carry loads weighing up to twelve times their own weight. Usually, they carry loads only two to four times their own weight. Leaf-cutters often cut leaves fifty to one hundred meters away from their nest. Each round-trip to a tree may take an ant several hours. Back at the nest, the ants do not eat the leaf fragments. Instead, smaller workers cut the leaves into small pieces which they use as fertilizer for growing a fungus that they use for food.
Each colony of Atta cephalotes has one mother queen who can live more than fifteen years. All the workers are her daughters. Colonies of Atta cephalotes can grow to have ten million workers, all sisters. Here an Atta cephalotes queen sits on her fungus garden, surrounded by her daughters.

Games Ants
As you move your mouse around the page a swarming army of ants scattered about the window will chase after it. (No wisecracks about buggy code now...) If an ant actually reaches the mouse cursor, we reposition it randomly around the edge of the window, and its chase starts again. The ant images are preloaded with a great image loading bar script, then the script begins. A great effect!
Ants Screenshot
To the right you will find a screenshot of the 'Ants' script in use rather than the usual live example. Based on the overwhelming number of sites (200+) that were calling the ants images from our site, we had to remove the live Ants example and the ant images from our web server. This will help decrease the stress on our server and ensure that the entire internet.com network is always accessible to you, the user. However, you can still put this script on your site as usual. Just copy the ants source code in the box below and download the ants images zip below the screenshot. This zip file contains all the ant images. Click here to download ants.zip

When first collected and identified in the Homestead, Florida area in 1986, the white footed ant was considered only of minor importance for the pest control industry. This tiny ant has now become quite a nuisance in at least 8 Florida counties, 3 of which are waiting for official confirmation. Originating in certain areas of Japan (Okinawa, Iriomote, southern Kyushu and Nansei Islands,) they were first accidentally imported into Florida. White-footed ants have been confirmed in the following Florida counties:
Dade, Broward, Collier, Palm Beach, Orange and Sarasota These ants have been reported (but not officially confirmed) in:
Martin and St. Lucie Counties, Florida. Since attempts to eradicate this pest have fallen short of their mark, we can expect to see them slowly migrate. If you believe that you have encountered white footed ants, place several specimen in a vial of alcohol and send them to:

Argentine Ants
Although ants seem little and insignificant to us, once we look into their world they become important. The way Argentine ants build their homes and the way they communicate are unique. In addition, the social structure of the Argentine ant is different from other ants. To get into their world, it's necessary to learn more about them. Are you ready? Let's march into the underground world of the Argentine ant. Left . . . left . . . left, right, left . . .
HABITATS
The Argentine ants can usually be found in the top six feet of soil. They can live in moist soil underneath buildings and by sidewalks. Boards can also be used as shelter. Sometimes colonies develop in potted plant soil. Nests can be made of rocks, twigs, dirt, and so forth. Argentine ants relocate their nests often. Food sources and temperature affect where nests are built. Other types of ants live in anthills that look simple on the outside but contain a labyrinth of specialized chambers.

ANTS
This module is intended to serve as a source of basic information needed to implement an Integrated Pest Management program for structure-infesting ants. Any pest management plan or activity must be formulated within the framework of the management zones where it will be implemented. Full consideration must be given to threatened and endangered species, natural and cultural resources, human health and safety, and the legal mandates of the individual parks. Recommendations in this module must be evaluated and applied in relation to these broader considerations.
Ants are among the most successful insects. Experts estimate that there could be 20,000 or more species of ants in the world. They have evolved to fill a variety of different ecological niches as predators, herbivores, leaf-cutters, seed-harvesters, aphid- tenders, and fungus-growers. They are found in deserts and rainforests, mountains and valleys, from the Arctic Circle to the tip of South America. They are interesting organisms that should be studied to better understand their unique behaviors and their roles in the earth's ecosystems.
They can also be pests, however. Fire ants and others may sting or bite people and animals. Pharaoh ants get into wounds and dressings in hospitals. House-infesting ants can become pests by their presence in kitchens and living areas. Carpenter ants tunnel into structural wood. Mound-building ants mar the appearance of lawns and landscaped areas. Sometimes ants must be managed to suppress a pest problem.

    Carpenter Ants
    Genus species Hymenoptera Formicidae
Gnawing away at a decomposing log by the side of a tropical stream in Ecuador, these carpenter ants make their homes in excavated wood chambers. Formicid ants are quite varied but can be easily recognized by their elbow-shaped antennae. Most ants exhibit societal organization with female worker castes doing the brunt of the work. Surrealist artist, Salvador Dali often included groupings of ants within his paintings and was generally fascinated by their activities.

AORTA is an extension to the ANTS framework developed by Pablo Orozco at University of Valladolid. Demo Pong and Tanks games released. ANTS.COMM updated. This month will be released new applications built on top of ANTS: ANTS Web Workspace system and new multi-user game examples. New ANTS/MOVE version released: MOVE will be presented at ACM Collaborative Virtual Environments 2002 Conference. ANTS J2EE CORE beta2 has been released with two new sample applications: Pong and whiteboard. ANTS J2EE CORE beta1.1 has been released. ANTS J2EE CORE beta1 has been released. Description The ANTS system aims to provide a generic multi-user collaborative framework. Being the overall problem a complex distributed challenge, it is necessary to base on solid distributed technologies as well as provide generic CSCW services to the user and developer communities. We can distinguish three main layers in the overall architecture: a technology layer, a CSCW layer, and a Framework extensions layer. Who we are The ANTS project is the main CSCW and CSCL research line of the ANTS research group. We are involved in a number of spanish and european research projects on CSCL and CSCW. We are also an active member of learning specifications and groups like IMS (Instructional Management Systems) and ARIADNE.
