Published In this Guideline:
Ants are among the most prevalent pests in households. They are also found in restaurants, hospitals, offices, warehouses, and other buildings where they can find food and water. Once ants have established a colony inside or near a building, they may be difficult to control. On outdoor (and sometimes indoor) plants, ants protect and care for honeydew-producing insects such as aphids, soft scales, whiteflies, and mealybugs, increasing damage from these pests. Ants also perform many useful functions in the environment, such as feeding on other pests (e.g., fleas, caterpillars, termites), dead insects, and decomposing tissue from dead animals. There are over 12,000 species of ants throughout the world. In California, there are about 200 species but fewer than a dozen are important pests. The most common ant occurring in and around the house and garden in California is the

Educational Resource Guide #4 Carpenter Ants
by Barb Ogg, Ph.D., Extension Educator Carpenter ants are important in the balance of nature because they burrow and nest in dead trees and enhance decay of the wood. They achieve pest status when a colony invades and damages the integrity of the wood within a house. This fact sheet will explain how the biology and behavior of carpenter ants relate to control strategies when a homeowner is faced with this problem. Description and Habits: The black carpenter ant, Camponotus pennsylvanicus , is the most common carpenter ant species in Nebraska. Foraging workers are 1/4 inch to 5/8 inch and black in color. Another species, the rust-colored carpenter ant, Camponotus ferrugineus , is a bit smaller and has a reddish-orange thorax with a black head and abdomen. The most diagnostic characteristic of all carpenter ants is they have a one-segmented pedicel (the segment between the thorax and the abdomen). The profile of the thorax is evenly rounded and not bumpy. Most carpenter ant workers are polymorphic—which means they are different sizes. Entomologist refer to larger workers as "major" workers and the smaller workers as "minor" workers. Each colony has at least one "queen," the reproductive member that produces all additional members of the colony. There may be more than one queen in a colony.

MANAGEMENT PUBLICATION ... GLOSSARY DESCRIPTION OF THE PESTS The most prevalent of the ant species, the Argentine ant , is a small, uniformly deep brown ant. Worker ants travel in characteristic trails on trees, the ground, or irrigation lines and build their nests underground. Ant populations peak in midsummer and early fall. The southern fire ant is light reddish brown with a black abdomen. These ants build nests of loose mounds or craters near bases of trees and do not aggregate in colonies as large as those of the Argentine ant. Native gray ants are gray and considerably larger than the other two species. They nest in topsoil or under rocks and debris and move in irregular patterns. In contrast to Argentine and fire ants, the native gray ant is solitary and its importance in disrupting biological control is often underestimated.

Order Hymenoptera
This page contains pictures and information for Sawflies, Bees, Wasps and Ants that we found in the Brisbane area, Queensland, Australia.
A cluster of bees rested on grass stem during the late afternoon.
The insect order Hymenoptera includes sawflies, wasps, bees and ants. The name Hymenoptera means 'membrane wings'. Their adults have two pair of membranous wings with the forewings lager than the hind wings. The main defining characteristic of Hymenoptera is that the front and hind wings are held together by a series of little hooks called hamuli. The female insects have strings to inject venom to their enemy where the string is their modified ovipositor. Most insects in this order have a waist that separates the thorax and abdomen. On their head they have two large compound eyes and mandibulate mouthparts. Their antenna is medium in length and usually strongly elbowed. Most larvae in this order are maggot-like and with no legs. However, the Sawflies larvae look like caterpillars and sometimes mistaken as butterflies or moths larvae. The insects in this order developed in complete metamorphosis.

There are thousands of species of ants found all over the world and in just about every type of land environment. Many species are found in rain forests . The science of studying ants is called myrmecology.
Ants are common social insects . They always live in colonies (a colony is a group of related ants); some colonies have millions of ants in them. Each ant colony consists of the following:
  • Queen - The queen begins her life with wings, which she uses while mating. After mating with a male ant (or many males), she flies to her nesting area. She then loses her wings and spends her life laying eggs.
  • Workers - Workers are the many sterile (non-reproducing), wingless female worker ants who are the daughters of the queen. These workers collect food and feed members of the colony, defend the colony, and enlarge the nest. Most of the ants in a colony are workers.
  • Soldiers - Soldiers are large workers (sterile females) who defend the colony and often raid other colonies, capturing slaves.

Fire Ants - What are they?
Red Imported Fire Ant, Solenopsis invicta , is a serious new pest which has been detected in Queensland, Australia. They inflict a painful sting and if not eradicated will seriously affect our lifestyle. They are the greatest ecological threat to Australia since the introduction of the rabbit and are potentially worse than the cane toad.
What do they look like?
Fire ants look very much like ordinary house or garden ants. Fire ants are :
  • Small
  • Reddish-brown in colour on the head and body, with a darker abdomen
  • Come in a variety of sizes within one nest, ranging from 2mm to 6 mm. This is a distinguishing feature of fire ants
Their nests can appear as dome-shaped mounds up to 40cm high. Mounds will not always be evident, but are usually found in open areas such as lawns, pastures, along roadsides and unused cropland, but rarely occur in frequently cultivated areas. This species could easily be confused with the common coastal brown ant and as well as some local native ants, but can be distinguished by its aggressive behaviour. More pictures of fire ants and their nests.

Ants are social animals and live in colonies, sometimes these colonies may contain only 50 or so individuals but one supercolony of Formica yessensis on the coast of Japan is reported to have had 1,080,000 queens and 306,000,000 workers in 45,000 interconnected nests. Some Scientist think that 30% of the animal biomass of the Amazon Basin is made up of ants, and that 10% of the animal biomass of the world is ants. and that a further 10% is Termites.
This means that 'social insects' could make up an incredible 20% of the total animal biomass of this planet.
