The Secret Lives of Ants
by Stephanie Bailey
Entomology Extension Specialist
revised by Patricia Dillon
ACTIVITY #1 - Introduction
Even though ants are tiny, as a group they have a big impact on the natural world. All together, ants have the largest biomass of any group of animals on the earth. Ants are champion earthmoversthey move more earth than any other organism including earthworms (who are no slouches in the dirt-moving business, as you may know!). Have kids draw or tell what they think is going on underneath the soil in an ant nest. What jobs do they do? What do they do for fun? Then read a book such as Ant Cities , by A. Dorros, Ants by W. Goetsch, or Insect Societies by E. O. Wilson.
ACTIVITY #2 - Ant Trails
Watch the ants coming and going in an outdoor ant colony. Encourage the students to form ideas about their movement:
  • Do they seem to follow each other?
  • How do they know where to go?
  • What advantage(s) would come from following another ant?

Ants Formicidae
Ants have been acclaimed for their wisdom since ancient times. They stand out at, or near, the peak of invertebrate development, displaying memory, learning, and the ability to correct mistakes. However, these intelligences are trapped inside rigid and programmed behavior patterns.
Like human societies, ant communities have their own expertise at the three primary methods of obtaining food: gathering, hunting, and growing. The caste system of ants is believed to have existed for 30 or 40 million years.
In North America, there are several species of ants, each of which have a distinct behavior pattern. These include carpenters, dairymen, soldiers, seed collectors, fungus growers, and even thieves and beggars.

HYG-2064-96
Ants rank number one in inquiries at our Ohio State University Extension Entomology office over all other household/structural pests. It is very important to have an accurate ant identification in order to determine the best method of control if needed. When in doubt, collect several specimens in a watertight vial, add isopropyl or 70 percent alcohol (not water), and enclose in a crush proof box. Take to your county Extension office of Ohio State University Extension or mail to the C. Wayne Ellett Plant and Pest Diagnostic Clinic, 110 Kottman Hall, 2021 Coffey Road, Columbus, Ohio 43210-1087, phone (614)292-5006. A nominal fee is charged for specimen identification. Some ants are so small and similar in appearance when viewed by the naked eye, that it takes trained specialists to tell the difference between species. Common Name Scientific Name Carpenter Ant Camponotus spp.

In 1955 the third and final method was developed to effectively control fire ants at a fraction of the cost of either of the previous methods. This breakthrough is: The Amazing Fire Ant Probe The Amazing Fire Ant Probe can treat 10 to 15 mounds using 2 gallons of mixed liquid insecticide with a 98% "kill" rate on the first application! Skip to Content. Home Forestry Regulatory Svcs ... Contact Us Main content begins below. IMPORTED FIRE ANTS HISTORY OF IMPORTED FIRE ANTS: Imported Fire Ants (IFA) were accidentally introduced into the United States from South America, beginning in about 1918. Solenopsis richteri or the black IFA was the first of two species of fire ants to be introduced via shipping into Mobile, Alabama. Another species of fire ant ( Solenopsis invicta or the red IFA) also became established in the Mobile area by the early 1940’s. The most common of the two species is the red IFA, which is now established in all or part of 13 states and Puerto Rico. The black IFA is found in a relatively small area comprising a part of northeastern Mississippi, northwestern Alabama, and southern Tennessee, with a hybrid of the red and black IFA being found near this region. The first confirmed sighting of IFA in Tennessee was an isolated infestation in Shelby County in 1948, which was quickly eradicated. Natural migration of IFA was first documented in Tennessee in Hardin County in 1987. Now, much of southern Tennessee is infested with IFA. Tennessee IFA Quarantine Map.
