Antonyms are word pairs that are opposite in meaning, such as hot and cold fat and thin , and up and down . Words may have different antonyms, depending on the meaning. Both long and tall are antonyms of short Antonyms are of two types: gradable antonyms are pairs that express relationships in a continuum, such as up and down complementary antonyms are pairs that express an either/or relationship, such as dead or alive Although the word antonym was only coined by philologists in the 19th century, such relationships are a fundamental part of the language, in contrast to synonyms, which are a result of history and drawing of fine distinctions, or homonyms, which are mostly etymological accidents or coincidences. Homonym Homonyms are words that sound the same, but have a different meaning. Homonyms may or may not differ in spelling. Generally the context will make it clear which one is meant. A Horse is a Hoarse, Of Course, Of Coarse
A Lesson Plan on Homonyms/Homophones Purpose : This activity is designed to teach students about homonyms (or homophones) by means of cooperative learning. Though it is intended for intermediate-grade students, it could easily be adapted to other grade levels. Background : Homophones are words that are pronounced the same but differ in meaning and origin. They may also differ in spelling. The word homonym is currently most often used as a synonym for homophone. However, some teachers, writers, and wordsmiths still like to differentiate between the two, using homonym to refer only to words with the same sound and the same spelling , but with different meanings, such as bear (the animal) and bear (carry). These writers prefer that the word homophone be used only for words with the same sound, but with different spellings and different meanings, such as bear (the animal) and bare (unclothed). To confuse matters further, the word homograph is used to refer to words with the same spelling but different pronunciations and different meanings , such as polish (shine) and Polish (the language).

This week let's experiment with synonyms and antonyms and homonyms. Get yourself a dictionary and a thesaurus. First randomly flip through a dictionary, a fiction book or a newspaper and randomly select 30 words other than little words (a, an, the) or prepositions or pronouns. Second write each one down on a separate index card or piece of paper. Then each morning pick 3 to 6 to work/play with. MONDAY
List as many synonyms for your chosen words as possible TUESDAY
List as many antonyms for your chosen words as possible WEDNESDAY
List as many synonyms for your chosen words as possible. THURSDAY
List as many homonyms you can from all three lists. FRIDAY
Combine Monday's and Tuesday's words and generate more antonyms and synonyms, experimenting with combinations of the words. When possible add words from other languages that are synonyms or antonyms for your chosen words throughout the week. Have a creative, unique, novel, unusal or dull, boring, routine, monotous week.

    Description:
Word Seeker is a classic concentration game that helps children learn word skills. The object of the game is to match the first word with the second word that is exactly the same, a synonym, an antonym, or a homonym. The game begins with eighteen blocks faced down. The user clicks on a block to reveal the hidden word. Subsequently the user selects another block to reveal its hidden word. If the words match, the two blocks disappear. Otherwise, the blocks reset to their hidden states. Match all nine pairs to clear the game. Scoring is based on the number of pairs revealed before selecting a matching pair.
