and Atypical eating disorders in males Anorexia was first described in males by both Morton (57) and Gull (58). Anorexia in males accounted for approximately six percent of cases seen in an eating disorder clinic (38,59). Anorexia may be underdiagnosed because many physicians, as well as the anorectics themselves, are unaware that this condition occurs in both sexes. The mean age of onset of male anorexia has been reported ranging from as young as 17 years in a British series by Crisp and Burns (47) to 24 years (38,60). Crisp found that the illness was present an average of three and one-half years and that most patients were mildly obese (127.3 percent of ideal body weight, IBW) prior to the onset of illness. Minimal weight dropped to 67.3 percent of IBW (60) during the acute phase of illness. Apparently contrasting socioeconomic groups of origin for male anorectics may represent specific populations, seen in various programs. Andersen and Mickalide (48) found a high socioeconomic group at Johns Hopkins, while Herzog (38) in Boston and Verdereycken and Van den Broucke (59) in Belgium found an even socioeconomic distribution.

    • General Information
Anorexia is an eating disorder distinguished by a significant weight loss resulting from extreme dieting. Although it can effect boys and men, usually women and teenage girls suffer from this disease.
      • Many are motivated by the desire to become thin. They are scared of becoming fat.
      • Anorexics have low self esteems. They have it set in their mind that they are fat, no matter how much they really weigh.
      • They set high goal for themselves so that they can reach the “ideal weight?and have the “perfect body.?
      • They invent rules regarding how much food is allowed and how much exercise is needed after eating certain amounts of food.
      • They must count every single calorie in every bit of food they eat.
      • Some even feel the need to excessively exercise on top of dieting.
      • Not until they can admit they have a problem, anorexics can recover.

    • Symptoms
Noticeable weight loss (at least 15% of normal weight)
      • Isolating themselves
      • Excessive exercise
      • Obsession with food, calories, and diets
      • Excuses for not eating meals
      • Unusual eating habits such as picking at food
      • Noticeable discomfort around food
      • Complaining of being "too fat", even when thin

    Welcome to SexHelp.com!
Special Book Offers Order Sexual Anorexia
Sexual anorexia is an obsessive state in which the physical, mental, and emotional task of avoiding sex dominates one's life. Like self-starvation with food or compulsive dieting or hoarding with money, deprivation with sex can make one feel powerful and defended against all hurts. As with any other altered state of consciousness, such as those brought on by chemical use, compulsive gambling or eating, or any other addiction process, the preoccupation with the avoidance of sex can seem to obliterate one's life problems. The obsession can then become a way to cope with all stress and all life difficulties. Yet, as with other addictions and compulsions, the costs are great. In this case, sex becomes a furtive enemy to be continually kept at bay, even at the price of annihilating a part of oneself. The word anorexia comes from the Greek word orexis, meaning appetite. An-orexis, then, means the denial of appetite. When referring to food appetite, anorexia means the obsessive s tate of food avoidance that translates into self-starvation. Weight concerns and fear of fat transform into a hatred of food and a hatred of the body because the body demands the nurturance of food. food anorexics perceive bodily cravings for sustenance as a failure of self-discipline. The refusal to eat also becomes a way for food anorexics to reassert power against others, particularly those who may be perceived as trying to control the anorexic, trying in some manner to prevent the anorexic from being his or her "true" self. Ironically, many food anorexics are driven by a powerful need to meet unreal cultural standards about the attractiveness of being thin. A terror of sexual rejection rules their thoughts and behaviors and is a primary force behind this striving for thinness. The irony here is that sexual anorexics share precisely the same terror.

An exploration into the phenomenon of eating disorders: anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa through the media of mythology, fairy tales and the psychology of C.G. Jung:
    Alice's Adventures in the Underworld
    by Malcolm Wm Timbers
When Alice retired to her room to do her lessons she went to the window to look outside. The clouds were just parting revealing a dark moon hanging in a starry sky. The last of the leaves were falling from the trees and drifting across the lane under the light of the gas lamp. It had been a stormy evening and the weather was turning colder. Alice lit several candles and peered into her looking-glass. While she sat there gazing deeply into the looking-glass she began to fantasize that her looking-glass was a portal into another world where everything was turned around backwards from the ordinary world. She particularly liked to imagine that her looking-glass was a doorway that lead backwards in time. Then, suddenly, she thought to herself, "if only I could find the key to unlock the door I could enter that strange world."
Alice had always fantasized that her looking-glass possessed a spirit like the looking-glass in the Snow White story. Each evening Alice would light several candles and peer deeply into the looking-glass and ask the fateful question, "Who is the fairest of them all?" Although Alice thought she heard the faint whisperings of spirits, she knew that it was all make-believe, but her fantasies are what made her ordinary life seem worth living. Despite Alice's cheerful demeanour, she was painfully aware of the tragic thread that ran through the fabric of all life, which sometimes made her ordinary life seem stupid and cruel.

    Jeremy Hirst
Anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa affect millions of people each year in the United States ( ). Popular thought holds that these disorders are caused by women trying to fulfill a culturally imposed ideal body image which stresses thinness. As anorexia and bulimia have proven difficult to treat solely with a psychological-based treatment plan it is likely that there are many factors contributing to these disorders. Research has shown, however, that there is a significant biological component which leads to a manifestation of these disorders ( ). Amenorrhea, the cessation of the normal menstrual cycle is a common occurrence among anorexic women. There is a tremendous discord between actual weight and perceived body weight. While the woman may feel fat she is actually excessively underweight. "When she came in for consultation she looked like a walking skeleton. Alma insisted that she looked fine and that there was nothing wrong with her being so skinny. 'I enjoy having this disease and I want it. I cannot convince myself that I am sick and that there is anything from which I have to recover." ( Bulimia nervosa is a related disorder which affects two to three percent of young American women ( ). This disease is most commonly described as the cycle of eating huge quantities of food, thousands of calories in one sitting, then ridding the body of this food through some form of self purging. Purging is accomplished through excessive exercise, abuse of laxatives or diuretics, enemas, or vomiting. Many of these methods are often incorporated simultaneously. The bulimic frequently thinks this practice of bingeing and purging is disgusting and does so in private, making it hard to detect and treat.

    ED-1002-2001
Trisha Rayner Anorexia nervosa is a devastating eating disorder in which those affected adopt patterns of behavior that in extreme cases, may lead to self-inflicted starvation. While men do succumb to anorexia nervosa, most cases are young, middle or upper class women. Researchers have estimated that this disorder affects approximately 1 in 200 young women in our society. Eating disorders, such as binge eating disorder specifically, have a high prevalence among college women. But the aforementioned diseases have narrow definitions. The problem of eating disorders must be seen as a continuum, starting from healthy on one end of the continuum to having the serious disease of anorexia or bulimia on the other end. Why is this such a problem among women? Culturally accepted norms of beauty and fitness are huge factors. Adolescence is a rapidly changing time in our lives and often we may feel that we have little control in the outcome of events around us. Control over our bodies and eating patterns (or lack thereof) is one way to exert power over the forces around us. Unfortunately, many become obsessive about it and develop eating disorders that distort and confuse their sense of how their body should and does look. The defining features of this disorder are: (a) an intense and irrational fear of body fat and weight gain, (b) a determination to become thinner and thinner, and (c) a misperception of body weight and shape to the extent that the person may feel or see "fat" even when starvation is clear to others. These psychological characteristics contribute to drastic weight loss and defiant refusal to maintain a healthy weight for height and age. Food, calories, fat grams, weight, and weight management dominate the person's life and attempts to help are often ignored or met with denial or anger.
