464 - Sociology in the Jesus Movement Sociology in the Jesus Movement By Richard A. Horsley New York, Crossroad, 1989. 178 Pp. $22.95. Ever since the publication of Gerd Theissen's work on the sociology of early Palestinian Christianity, scholars have been confronted with a text that effectively reduces the Jesus movement to an epiphenomenon of social change and oppression. There is little comfort in Theissen for 466 - Sociology in the Jesus Movement those who think that individual actors can transcend their situation sufficiently to anticipate the social consequences of their actions, let alone to foresee how protest can result in new forms of compliance and subordination. Theissen's work concludes with a discussion of the "intensification of norms" through which early Christianity scored moral victories and turned its anger toward itself in a posture of moral aggression, as it were. Theissen wrote in the tradition of Nietzsche and Scheler, whose essays on ressentiment came to similar conclusions about religion in general and Christianity in particular. Enter now Richard Horsley on the side of those whose faith is put effectively to the use of liberation.

A Sociological Perspective
"Technology does not exist in a vacuum, and, technology is not neutral" Dr. Michael Mehta is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Saskatchewan, and runs the Sociology of Biotechnology program at the University’s Virtual College of Biotechnology. He holds a B.A. in Psychology, a Masters degree in Environmental Studies, and a Ph.D. in Sociology, as well as four years of post-doctoral training in Policy Studies. Imagine yourself in a classroom, in your office or going about your daily work, when suddenly the lights go out. Although everything else: the people around you and the objects that surround you are unchanged, you perhaps feel a bit of anxiousness. Small noises that wouldn’t usually bother you make you a bit jumpy. You are more volatile and more concerned. This reaction is termed as an ‘anomie’, and describes a state of normallessness, where norms are confused, unclear or not present. In this case, having light in the room would be an expected norm; its removal causes anxiety. The feeling of anomie is one of the activating factors affecting the acceptance of GMOs, explains Mehta. As a sociologist who studies the interaction between technology and society, he has defined a model to show the relationships between these two dynamic components. “Technology does not exist in a vacuum and technology is not neutral,” he says. Instead, he views technology as a product of social relations that exist among individuals, organizations and governments.
