Definition
Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a systemic disorder that refers to inflammation of the joints in the spine. AS is the primary disease in an entire group of conditions known as seronegative spondylarthropathies.
Description
A form of arthritis, AS is characterized by chronic inflammation, causing pain and stiffness of the back, progressing to the chest and neck. Eventually, the whole back may become curved and inflexible if the bones fuse, which is known as "bamboo spine." Other conditions associated with AS include, reactive arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, spondylitis of inflammatory bowel disease , and undifferentiated spondyarthropathy. AS may involve multiple organs, such as the:

autoimmune oophoritis and orchitis. Blood Vessels autoimmune disease of the adrenal gland. Psoriasis, Spondyloarthropathies such as ankylosing spondylitis.
http://www.niaid.nih.gov/publications/autoimmune/causes.htm
What Are the Causes of Autoimmune Diseases? Are they contagious? No autoimmune disease has ever been shown to be contagious or "catching." Autoimmune diseases do not spread to other people like infections. They are not related to AIDS, nor are they a type of cancer. Are they inherited? The genes people inherit contribute to their susceptibility for developing an autoimmune disease. Certain diseases such as psoriasis can occur among several members of the same family. This suggests that a specific gene or set of genes predisposes a family member to psoriasis. In addition, individual family members with autoimmune diseases may inherit and share a set of abnormal genes, although they may develop different autoimmune diseases. For example, one first cousin may have lupus, another may have dermatomyositis, and one of their mothers may have rheumatoid arthritis. Examples of Autoimmune Diseases:

Klebsiella
Klebsiella
. The reason for proposing Klebsiella as a causative agent of ankylosing spondylitis is that specific antibodies to this microbe, but not to twelve others, have been demonstrated (Ebringer, 105). Patients with ankylosing spondylitis will have specific antibodies for Klebsiella , but not these other bacteria during the active phase of their disease. Such other bacteria are: The first theory under consideration is the receptor theory. In the receptor theory, the MHC molecule acts as a receptor site which binds a proposed, but not yet discovered, environmental peptide. This then somehow increases the chance for a person to develop ankylosing spondylitis. Currently, this is the theory most researchers favor. Recent studies have shown that the HLA-A2 molecule has two alpha domains separated by a groove which is made of eight antiparallel beta strands (Ebringer, 109). This groove would contain or present the peptide. However, since these "arthritogenic" polypeptides in this groove have yet to be identified, this theory will remain unanswered and its use as a model to answer questions about AS will be unknown. Klebsiella antigen, did bind to anti-HLA-B27 sera. However, it was not until 1987, that a certain hexamer amino acid sequence which was present in both HLA-B27 molecule and

(Ankle-oo-sing Spondie-lie-tiss) When most people hear the word Arthritis they think of elderly folks - Grandma and Grandpa. Although many adults and older people will develop arthritis, it is not very common in children. Juvenile Arthritis (JA) is a term used to categorize the different types of arthritis affecting children. The most common type of JA is Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA). The type of JRA that affects the spine is called Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS). JRA is diagnosed in children less than 16 years of age whose arthritis has persisted for longer than six weeks. What causes JRA or AS?
The exact cause or causes are not understood. Sometimes it is triggered by a bacterial infection or an autoimmune problem. An autoimmune disorder can cause the body to rebel against itself. How does the disease start?

Introduction: Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing Spondylitis: Inflammation of spinal joints similar to rheumatoid arthritis Ankylosing Spondylitis: This type of arthritis primarily affects the spine, but may also cause arthritis in the hips, shoulders, and knees. The tendons and ligaments around the bones and joints in the spine become inflamed, resulting in pain and stiffness, especially in the lower back. Ankylosing spondylitis tends to affect people in late adolescence or early adulthood. Contents for Ankylosing Spondylitis: Footnotes: 1. excerpt from

Many sites provide valuable information, while others may have information that is unreliable or misleading." Furthermore, because of the rapid increase in Internet-based information, many hours can be wasted searching, selecting, and printing. Since only the smallest fraction of information dealing with ankylosing spondylitis is indexed in search engines, such as www.google.com or others, a non-systematic approach to Internet research can be not only time consuming, but also incomplete. This book was created for medical professionals, students, and members of the general public who want to conduct medical research using the most advanced tools available and spending the least amount of time doing so.
