Audience: Key Stage 2 Year Group: 6 This is a 'long' unit that encourages children to investigate, through research, other places in the UK, Europe and further afield that share a similar physical environment. It builds on earlier work, eg studying a contrasting locality. It is a challenging unit suitable for older children and easily extended for more able children who can study the complex relationships between the elements. Children, working in groups or individually, will need to use a range of resources, which could include textbooks and pictures as well as CD-ROMs and the internet. Lesson Plan on Myths, Folktales, and Legends Use this in the classroom to teach your lesson, use it when you teach, if you need a cross curricula project or send it home with the student if they are absent the day you cover myths, folktales, and/or legends. Grade? This lesson plan would be great for eighth grade or above; however, sixth and seventh grade may could concentrate on *animals in myths or another aspect of this. Beware some of the animals in myths may not be appropriate for younger students. Goal: To provide an understanding of and the background knowledge for the concepts of these different types of literature. Objectives:
    • Students will be able to compare and contrast characteristics of folktales, myths, and legends. Students will be familiar with some literature representative of all three types. Students will appreciate literature more having some background knowledge and history as a foundation to understanding it.
"Therefore, even the lover of myth is in a sense a philosopher; for myth is composed of wonders." Aristotle A myth is fiction something which is untrue. Mythology often addresses the theme of good conquering over evil. Scholars of mythology usually define a myth as a kind of story which attempts to interpret some aspect of the world around us. Some background information The Zapotec Indians of the Oaxaca Valley in the southern Mexican State of Oaxaca (pronounced Wah Ha Kah) are the artists of a unique and intriguing art form. The beautiful valley was the site of a very advanced civilization about 2000 years ago, evidenced by the ruins of Monte Alban and Mitla. The woodworking techniques and artistic capacity of the Zapotec people have been refined over generations. Carved from the Copal Tree when the wood is green, this art comes from the three villagesArrazola, San Martin Tilcajete and La Union Tejalapan in the State of Oaxaca. Full of movement and humor, the figures spring from the imaginations and superstitions of the carvers, for whom myth and magic are as much a part of daily life as conventional religion. The wooden sculptures are hand carved then hand sanded and hand painted in their characteristically bright colors. Traditionally, the men are the carversthe carving is done during the "off" season for farming.

    http://teacherlink.ed.usu.edu/tlresources/units/Byrnes-celebrations/Earth Day- H
Mini-Unit Subtopic: Earth Day Grade levels: 4th through 6th Author: Becky Johnson Background: Our planet is a complex system of land, air, and water. Living things depend on each other and this system for existence. Over the thousands of years since life has existed on the earth, it has undergone some changes. The following are some of these changes: Many species became extinct before mankind made its appearance, however, since humans have existed on the earth, the extinction rate has risen dramatically. More than 4,000 species are currently considered threatened. Plant and animal life become endangered for many reasons. Forest depletion, hunting, and pollution are the most obvious factors. When an animal becomes endangered, dozens of other species can also become endangered. For example, elephants disappeared from southern Africa about 80 years ago because of hunters. Elephants continue to be hunted, mainly for their costly ivory tusks. The endangerment of elephants also has endangered such animals in their area as wildebeest and antelope who live off of the open-grassland which elephants create by eating their way through a jungle. Oxygen-producing trees and plants are being cut down for the purpose of growing foods, grazing livestock, making paper products, etc. The cutting down of forests puts forest wildlife at risk and decreases the oxygen in the air. It also defaces the natural beauty of the planet. Tropical rain forests are often cleared for farming. The soil in these forests are poor in nutrients, and within a few years the crops fail and the land is abandoned. New forests are cleared.

Dear Educator: In this era of multi-cultural education, we think it is important to inform students that while the majority of Americans are meat-eaters, millions of Americans are vegetarians. Vegetarian children sometimes find themselves ostracized at school. Even adult vegetarians may encounter misunderstanding concerning their eating habits. Many people are reducing meat consumption and increasing the number of fruits, vegetables and grains they eat for health as well as ethical reasons. Diet, exercise and mental health are all-important ingredients in creating a healthy life style. Please use the attached lesson plan and coloring book with your class. Multiple copies of I Love Animals and Broccoli Coloring Book can be ordered from The Vegetarian Resource Group. Sincerely, Dr. Sheila Schwartz

    Vegetarian Lesson Plan
This is a lesson plan that teachers can use to introduce students to vegetarianism.
OBJECTIVE: By the end of the period today, students will be familiar with the definition of vegetarianism and its various aspects. MATERIALS: Chalkboard, student notebooks. INTRODUCTORY LESSON:
  • DEFINITION OF VEGETARIANISM: Vegetarianism is the abstinence from meat, fish, and fowl. WHY PEOPLE ARE VEGETARIAN:
  • Compassion for animals: Many people do not want to kill or harm animals. For example, Albert Schweitzer and Mahatma Gandhi extended their philosophy of compassion and non-violence towards humans to animals also. Aesthetic considerations: Some individuals do not like the taste or appearance of meat. Ecological reasons: Every aspect of meat production, from raising livestock to slaughterhouse operations, presents ecological questions. It takes more land to produce protein through meat than through vegetables or grain. One acre of land produces 7.9 times more oats than beef and 9.8 times more broccoli than beef. Two- thirds of all cropland in the US, about 300 million acres, is devoted to growing feed for animals whose meat we eat. Excess nutrients fertilizers and animal waste washing off from these farmlands pollute waterways. (Horton, Tom

    Lesson Description: Materials:
    • The Long and Short of It by Cheryl Nathan and Lisa McCourt, Troll Books, Bridgewater Paperbacks, 1998.
    • white construction paper, color pencils, markers, colors,
    • items students can use to make comparisons as they draw their animal
    1. Launching the Lesson
  • Read the book. Talk about favorite pages the children had and why they liked them. Focus on the mathematical vocabulary used to compare sizes.
  • Tell students they will be drawing animals that may have lived long, long ago in Kansas. They can be imaginary animals, or real animals. However, there will be some rules their animals have to fit. For example, I will ask them to draw a body for their animal that is a little bigger than their foot. Then I will ask them to draw heads, legs, eyes, mouths with teeth, noses, and ears. I will demonstrate how they draw the side view of their animals and show pictures in the book so they understand the term profile/side view. I will write the rules down for drawing, step by step. When they are done drawing, they will describe their animal using mathematical terms, but may also use color words. I will model this piece of writing with the picture I have secretly drawn as I gave them the rules.
