and peer-reviewed provide the best assurance of quality.
Internet publications (including books and CD-ROMS that mirror web pages) are especially problematic, since it is possible for anyone to publish "information". The quality of information ranges from outright lies and false information to info provided by the world's experts in their field the trick is learning how to tell the difference! Is that page about frogs posted by a 9-year-old who likes frogs, or by a scientist at a research institution? I know one web page devoted to a famous artist that is full of statements that are not true; it was created by a knowledgable fellow who tired of school children sending him rude e-mails demanding help with homework. He thought having a web page full of lies that children would put in their reports and get bad grades was a nifty way for him to get the last laugh. This is why it is important to know how to judge information!

How Not to Teach History in Science
by Douglas Allchin Minnesota Center for the Philosophy of Science, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis MN 55455, USA allchin@pclink.com
ABSTRACT. While history is a valuable tool for teaching science, many methods of applying history can mislead students. History does not create role models or lessons about "pathological" science. The cognitive recapitulation analogy can be overstated. "Wrong" ideas, when presented in their historical context, however, can be critically instructive. Teachers may also use history selectively, so long as they maintain fundamental respect for the integrity of the process of science historically. Finally, historical sensitivity to context is itself a skill fundamental to science, especially valuable in collaborative contexts where scientists (or students) disagree about how to interpret evidence.
1. INTRODUCTION History is not a stranger to the science classroom. What student does not learn of Darwin and his voyage on the Beagle , Mendel and his pea plants, Newton and his three laws, Mendeleev and his stunning predictions based on his periodic table, or Wegener and his underappreciated insights on continental drift? History often serves as an occasion to organize the serial development of concepts, to reconstruct reasoning, to celebrate scientific discovery or to bring anecdotal humor into a lecture. Teachers have used experimental simulations on historically faithful instruments (Conant 1957; Heering et al 1994), portrayed historical characters (Eakin 1975), and introduced the social and ethical contexts of science through case studies (Aikenhead 1991; Hagen, Allchin and Singer 1996). The value of history as a tool in science teaching is well documented (Matthews 1992; 1994; Hergit 1989; Hills 1992).

RESOURCES IN ETHICS AND RESPONSIBLE RESEARCH David G. Elmes Professor of Psychology Washington and Lee University Preparation of this site was supported by a by a grant from the Class of ’65 Endowment for Excellence in Teaching. January 2002 Updated September, 2003 OVERVIEW At its basic level, scientific research is a social process—produced by people for people. As such, scientific research reflects the strengths and weaknesses of the people who undertake it. All social phenomena are based on social contracts of one sort or another. Two of the most important guides to social interaction are morality and ethics. This site presents the moral and ethical issues that responsible scientists ought to consider as they engage in research. Various regulatory agencies, both government and disciplinary, mandate ethical practice. I hope that this site will permit scientists to access the resources appropriate to their disciplines and needs. IMPORTANT ISSUES The following issues are detailed at the web site: Responsible Conduct of Research , which is supported by the Office of Research Integrity of the US Department of Health and Human Services.
