ENDANGERED ANIMALS
An Enrichment Webquest
for 1st and 2nd Grades
by
Mary Jo Kohlberg
Introduction
"we will conserve only what we love,
we will love only what we understand,
we will understand only what we are taught"
Baba Dioum This very famous quotation may sound strange to you right now, but after you have finished this webquest you will know what this writer means and we will discuss what it means to you then. Animals are one of our favorite things to study and we have become quite concerned when we study the endangered animals of the rain forest. Then the latest issue of the student newspaper featured other endangered animals. So now is the perfect time to learn what we can do to help our favorite creatures.

Hint:underlined words take you to the Internet
Task
After reading the latest Scholastic newspaper that featured "Endangered Animals" and a boy doing his part to help them, your school has decided to recycle aluminum cans and use the money to adopt an endangered animal at a zoo. Your group's job is to choose an animal from this animal list . You need to scroll slowly down and click on the Endangered box. It will show you a long list so keep scrolling. You will then create a puppet show about your animal to convince other students that your chosen animal is the most worthy of adoption.

    Introduction Information 1 Information 2 Project ... Teacher page My intention for this webquest is to have 3rd and 4th grade students search the internet and learn facts on endangered animals and their conservation. By getting into small groups and finding a specific endangered animal they are interested in, I think the children will become interested in the problem at hand. As well as what types of conservation techniques are happening, and what they as kids can do to help. This project should take a week to complete. What should be known before starting webquest;
    • Competence with reading/writing Basic computer and internet searching skills Knowledge about animal endangerment Previous knowledge and experience in making skits
    Grading criteria;
    • Appropriate time spent on web pages Each member participating Animal paper containing a minimum of animal name, and two sentences of why animal is endangered. Conservation paper containing a minimum of one way in which people are trying to conserve wildlife, and one way the group would conserve their particular animal.

    Have you seen my friends or me?
    The last I knew, all of the animals on this page were on the "Endangered Species" list. What that means is that humans are destroying our families, our homes, our food, or us. God created us just like He did you but yet here we are, with all the intelligent people of the world running things, or thinking they are, and killing us all off. Oh now should I be surprised? Why would I when many of you are simply busying yourselves killing each other, the human race, off too! Now I may not have a college degree or a pedigree a mile long but I sure can tell you this - that is pure and simple stupidity.
    Why don't you all come out of the dark ages, out of the darkness, and do something to help us all - that's you, me, and all our fellow creatures. Before it's too late for all of us! Am I preaching? YES! Am I upset? YES! Is there hope? YES! The Lord Our Father created us all, I've always thought He did "humans" last because He was not only preparing the most wonderful of places but saving the best for last - YOU!
    And what do you do with it? Destroy it! And He loves you still and even gives you a chance for everlasting life in Heaven.

The Red List is a compilation of species categorized as Critically Endangered, Endangered, or Vulnerable according to the IUCN Categories of Threat. For the most part, categorizations are made by the Species Survival Commission (SSC) Specialist Group covering the taxa in question. Guidelines for using the Red List criteria have been developed to assist Specialist Groups in assessing the conservation status of fishes. The most recent edition of the Red List, which utilized these criteria, is the 1996 IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals. The WCMC Animals Database holds information on threatened species and others of conservation concern. Part of this database is used to generate The IUCN Red List of Threatened Animals, and this information is available here in interactive format.

    Description:
    Common Name: Ocelot
    Scientific Name: Leopardus pardalis The complexion of the Ocelot's fur is a sort-of peach colored background with many elegant black spots. Its tail has black rings all the way down which resembles the tail of a very shorthaired raccoon. The Ocelot has lines of black around its neck, long whiskers, and ears that have been covered in black. This scheme of dark colors helps the ocelot hide itself in the underbrush. The ocelot, like most felines, has incredible sight capabilities and is nocturnal. The ocelot can see six times as well as the average human. The ocelot has a very widespread, carnivorous diet of animals such as small deer, monkeys, mice, rats, birds, turtles, lizards, rabbits, and other animals smaller than itself. Females are pregnant for about 70 days and usually deliver around two kittens. Mothers are left to take care of their young primarily on their own.
    Environment:
    Ocelots have a wide range of habitats including jungles, rain forests, bushy areas, and yearly flooded areas, specifically wet areas such as riverbanks and marshlands. These diverse territories range from Argentina to southern Texas. These wet areas are usually chosen because ocelots are great swimmers. The advantage of swimming gives them the upper hand when defending or hunting in their wetland territory.

    So Many Troubling Reasons Take a look at this graphic that shows reasons why an African animal may be on the endangered species list. Trouble On The Savannah!
    Many African animals make their home on the savannah. Now the population of Africa is growing so rapidly that people must live and farm on these grasslands. A lot of animals need to live in game reserves and parks. Trouble makers
    Poachers are people who shoot animals to get their fur and tusks. Most countries have outlawed poaching, but many still kill animals because of the huge amount of money they will get for the horns and tusks. The Trouble With Hunting When the Europeans came to Africa, they often hunted the native animals for sport and for their furs and tusks. Wars: Trouble For People; Trouble For Animals!
    Europeans came to Africa and took over territory. Disputes arose about this and there was fighting. Many innocent people died in these wars. Other innocent victims of the fighting were the animals. Don't Get On This List! The official list of endangered animals is called The Red List. It is kept by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. This organization looks at the number of animals in the wild and what is happening to the animals' habitat. They look at environmental and predatory dangers that the species might be facing. At a meeting of the IUCN Council in November 1994, this organization set up guidelines to put animals in certain categories. These categories help people all over the world better understand what they must do to protect animals that are in danger of extinction. To find out more about The Red List you can go to

    Animals of the Rainforest
    We have so many animals here in the rainforest. We start learning about the animals and birds even when we are babies. Some animals we hunt for food so we don't go hungry, while other animals we use for fun as pets. Our favorite pets include frogs, baby birds, toucans, parrots, macaws, chickens, monkeys, pigs, baby alligators, snakes, turtles, agoutis, dogs, and even insects ! Do you have any pets like that? Unfortunately, certain animals have become endangered in the rain forests because of their popularity as pets in other parts of the world. "The Remarkable Feet of the Jacana"

    Zoos Animals in zoos are forced to live in artificial, stressful, and downright boring conditions. Removed from their natural habitats and social structures, they are confined to small, restrictive environments that deprive them of mental and physical stimulation. While zoos claim to provide conservation, education, and entertainment, their primary goal is to sustain public support in order to increase profits. Conservation
    Zoos profess to practice conservation, in other words, the preservation of various species, claiming that without their efforts, certain species would become extinct. However, if they were truly concerned with the preservation of species, they would instead work to preserve animals’ natural habitat. For it is in fact humans who are eroding the natural habitat of numerous species through pollution, rangeland degradation, topsoil erosion, crop and groundwater contamination, and other harmful processes.
    Education While a number of zoos make an effort to provide some sort of education, they mostly teach people how animals react in captive situations. Patrons are unable to witness how multifaceted the lives of animals truly are. Instead, zoo-goers observe animals’ reactions to boredom, depression, and stress.

Two years ago, Sally Grenz often heard such remarks from her kindergartners at Robert Healy Elementary School in Chicago. In the past year, though, she says, "I haven't heard these same students argue this way at all. They're treating other people with more respect." Her students-who have now finished first grade-also seem to be more giving toward others. "This past Christmas, in our letter-writing, they've been looking more for ways to help other people, instead of the usual, ‘I want this present and that present.'" Did something change Grenz's students, or did they just grow up a little? "I don't think it's because they're older," Grenz says. "I've visited some other Healy classes and seen the kids arguing like mine used to." She believes her children changed mainly because for the past two years she's given them regular lessons in treating animals, people and the environment with respect. "It's the only new thing I've added to my curriculum in two years."

    dvoorhis@tcsc.k12.in.us Technology has become the new literacy of the 21st century. If students are to acquire the skills and attitudes needed to succeed in an ever-changing global environment, they must be immersed in all facets of technology and research methods. From data research and analysis to multimedia presentations, every child should be given appropriate opportunities to explore and use broad spectra of technology. To provide real examples for students and to inspire them to stretch their own potential, teachers must also make daily use of integrated technology in lesson delivery. Kids with H.E.A.R.T. is an exemplary model of teacher creativity and skill in using technology and library research skills to address core standards in literacy and science while expanding awareness of an important environmental concern. The technology enhanced lesson makes learning fun and exciting, and stimulates students to continue research and create projects of their own.
    Under topic related lesson plans, you will find examples of a PowerPoint presentation on endangered animals, fast fact pages with detailed information on specific animals, sample HyperStudio stacks, sample presentation boards, clay animations, live video footage, and downloadable rubrics. We invite you to view our Kids With H.E.A.R.T. project and hope that it enhances your classroom instruction.
