The Wild Ones is an international club with the goal of providing students ages 7 to 13 with a place to share information about endangered species, different habitats and environments, and each other. It links to animal-related sites on the Internet, such as zoos, science institutions, and animal rights organizations. There are also links to student projects sponsored by the Wild Ones as well as those supported by other organizations.(M) The Santa Barbara Wildlife Care Network

We humans wreak havoc intentionally and otherwise on wild birds and mammals with our stray fishing line and hooks, guns, lead shot and sinkers, big windows that reflect the sky, pet dogs and cats, cars, pesticides, oil spills, chain saws, and other trappings. Some of the victims of our insensitivity are presented to us here through images and stories of their personal struggles to live. Remarkably, the producers of this site don't pound us with guilt but rather seek to uplift our sensibilities and knowledge. It is a renewing, thoughtful site for both adults and children. Information about the SBWCN, pictures and examples of animals rehabilitated: herons, pelicans, raven, loons, oiled bird rehabilitation. Ways you can help. (M)

    http://www.great-lakes.net/teach/chat/answers/061901_endangered.html
What specific species of wildlife are being endangered by the pollution of the Great Lakes?
from Julie in Chicago, Illinois, Age 13 Pollution in the Great Lakes affects the water itself as well as the life in and around the water. This includes the lives of many species of wildlife, not to mention humans beings. The decline in health of the wildlife in the Great Lakes region is a testament to our duty to clean up the Great Lakes and keep them clean. Every animals is vulnerable to pollutants, but some moreso than others. Amphibians, such as frogs, are especially at risk from pollution because they have thin skins and chemicals can pass through this barrier with ease. Animals that are higher in the food chain are exposed to even greater numbers of toxic chemicals due to their diets. Heavy metals (like mercury and lead) and human-made organic chemicals (like pesticides) bioaccumulate as they move up the food chain, resulting in tumors, deformities, and death for many animals, including tadpoles and frogs, old lake trout, herring gulls, mallard ducks, Canadian geese, loons, cranes, eagles, and wolves. Hawaii! Teaching about the 50th State
Hawaii celebrated its 40th anniversary of statehood on August 21, 1999! Take a tour of this exotic state, examine its wildlife, creep to the volcano's edge, and discover the wealth of culture and diversity that isolation can bring. Aloha! After 20 years of classroom teaching, Lena Kanemori of Enchanted Lake Elementary School in Kailua, Hawaii, became a technology coordinator and teacher of the gifted and talented. While studying endangered species, she was shocked to discover that Hawaii has the greatest number of endangered species of all of the United States. In response to this revelation and as an introductory Web-publishing project, she and her students created Endangered Species of Hawaii "Three years ago, when my students were involved in their study of Hawaii's endangered species, they were amazed, and I was more so, to find out that we had the most endangered species in the nation," Kanemori told Education World. "Finding out why we had so many endangered species was also most distressing."

    Teacher Tips!
Introduction: Your expertise is needed! "At the present rate of extinction as much a third of the world's species could be gone in the next twenty years." ( World Wildlife Fund )What can be done about this? As Wildlife experts you have been hired by the School District to inform the second grade about this problem. Task: The second graders have been studying animals. They are curious as to what endangered animals are. Our library materials on this subject are difficult for them to read and understand. You are an animal expert and have been asked to teach second grade students about endangered animals. It is important for the students to not only understand the problem but to be a part of the solution. You and two other experts will work together to create materials to help them understand the concept and plan an activity that students can do to help animals.
    Process:
    I. You will work in a team of three students. Brainstorm all you know about endangered species. Then create a list of questions that you need to answer to complete your task. Ideas to consider: What is biodiversity? What is an endangered animal? How does an animal become endangered? What animals are endangered? Where do they live? Are there any in your area? Does it really matter if a species disappears? What is being done to prevent extinction? Does more need to be done? You may have other ideas to add. Use notecards to keep track of the information you collect. You will have two periods in the media center to research and class time to finish your tasks. You may also work outside of school. You will present to the second grade in two weeks.
