Summertime tips for taking care of your household pets By Laura Orban
SPECIAL TO THE NEWS-TIMES
Although it seemed like it may never arrive, summer weather is finally upon us. For many, that means swimming, vacations, picnics and fun in the sun. For your companion animals, it means taking a few extra precautions to ensure their health and comfort during the hot weather. The Danbury Animal Welfare Society recommends some specific tips to ensure your dogs and cats enjoy the summer, too.
One of the most important summertime tips for companion animal care is not to leave any animal in a parked car for any length of time. Even with the windows partially open, a parked car can easily reach temperatures in excess of 120 degrees on a warm day in just a few minutes. Companion animals can suffer brain damage or die from heatstroke when trapped in such high temperatures. What may seem like a quick trip into the store for you can be a very dangerous and life-threatening experience for your animal.

Tag Day: Saturday, April 3, 2004
According to a 1997 study of 1,000 animal shelters conducted by the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy, approximately one million dogs and 584,000 cats were taken in as strays. Unfortunately for both owners and animals, only 16% of these dogs and 2% of cats were returned to their owners. These statistics are alarming. Tag Day is a major effort by American Humane to combat these statistics. We want to educate consumers on the benefits of identifying their companion animals with ID tags, license tags, microchipping or tattooing. Identification is your pet's ticket home! What To Do When Your Pet Is Lost
If your pet does become lost, don't delay. Take the following steps to help bring your companion animal home to safety.
  • Act fast!! Don't wait days hoping your pet will come home. The sooner you begin your search, the better the odds of finding him. Search your neighborhood or area where your pet was lost, and let people know she's missing. You may want to offer a reward. Call your pet's name and check any places she could have become trapped, such as in basements or garages or under vehicles. A lost pet often will hide during the day, so be sure to go out again at night with a flashlight and call for her. Sometimes a can of food can lure a hungry and scared pet to you.

Do your homework before adopting pet

Every year, animal shelters are overflowing with orphaned dogs and cats and according to American Humane, shelter populations tend to increase during the spring and summer. While The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) estimates that 6 to 8 million dogs and cats enter shelters each year, only about half find homes. The others lose their lives. For those wanting a new pet and wanting to save a life, shelters have the best selection of animals all ages, personalities and breeds waiting for you to take them home.
"Most of us want a buddy when we go looking for a pet. And buddies come in all shapes and sizes. While one out of every four dogs in U.S. shelters is a purebred, you're sure to find that one-of-a-kind buddy at your local shelter too," exhorts Stephanie Shain, director of outreach for companion animals for HSUS. Although it is easy to fall in love right away, adopting a pet is a serious decision and prospective pet owners need to do their homework to make sure their family is ready for the responsibility. Pets require time, money and care they're a long-term commitment (10 to 15 years for dogs and up to 20 years for cats). So before adding a pet to your family tree, take the time to ask yourself a few questions:

Vet's Office Proves Traumatic For Some Pet Owners
Same Treatments Apply To Animals As Humans
POSTED: 6:46 pm CDT April 29, 2004
UPDATED: 9:54 am CDT April 30, 2004
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. The veterinarian's office can be as traumatic an experience as the emergency room. Many routine days at the vet's office include treating "patients" for yearly shots, Other days, however, are full of surprises. At the Vestavia Animal Center, Dr. Shane West's first surgery for the day is a hairless rat named Igor. The mammal has a small growth, possibly a tumor, that West believes need to be removed. "Sometimes it surprises them to learn that their pet has a condition that somebody they know has had," West said. Noel, a 17-year-old feline, is having eating problems. Another cat that was hit by a car needs to be put to sleep. Its owners cannot afford to have West treat the animal. Igor, on the other hand, comes through his operation OK. His tumor has been sent to a lab for a biopsy.
