105. Ministry Of Agriculture, Nature And Food Quality - Policy Theme Animal Welfare
Finding solutions to animal welfare problems is no easy matter. animal welfare Policy Memorandum (PDF-format, 68 Kb) (march 2002).
http://www.minlnv.nl/international/policy/animal/welfare/
The welfare of animals was no issue until the late 1960s, when intensive livestock production developed. Ideas on how to keep animals rapidly changed. Awareness grew that animals were not created just for the benefit of man and that they have a value of their own. This intrinsic value is independent of the use an animal has for man.
Growing awareness of the intrinsic value of animals has led to a reconsideration of the manner in which animals are dealt with, farm animals as well as pets and zoo animals.
Finding solutions to animal welfare problems is no easy matter. Besides the animal’s there are other interests at stake. For example, a livestock keeper investing in animal welfare should keep an eye out for competition. And consumers compare prices when buying meat.
The improvement of animal welfare plays an important part in the policy developed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature Management and Fisheries. Travelling with dogs, cats and ferrets Animal Welfare - Policy Memorandum PDF -format, 68 Kb) (march 2002)

Where lost and abandoned animals can find food and shelter from the cruelties of life. Donate Sponsor Volunteer Adopt ... Contact Us Welcome to Animal Haven! We are a dedicated group of people with the goal of providing protection and refuge to homeless and abused animals. We provide shelter, veterinary care, and rehabilitation for life, or until someone like you comes and adopts one of our animals. Although our emphasis is on farm animals, we also have cats and dogs that desperately need a home.
We work closely with other animal welfare organizations including kennel clubs, breed rescue groups, and directly with the public. Our goal is to alleviate overcrowding in our local animal shelters by providing an alternative to traditional sheltering.
In addition to the care of our sheltered animals, we currently have two community support programs:
    • We supply pet food via the Meals on Wheels program to ensure that pets of low income families receive proper nutrition. We host and sponsor educational programs for children to encourage responsible pet ownership and compassion.

We invite you to browse our web site and call or email us with any questions you may have. We are desperately looking for volunteers and donations to help care for our animals. Of course, adoption is our main goal so please call us to arrange a visit.

The truth about cats and wildlife
Introduction Against cats In defense of cats References
    Introduction
Rightly or wrongly, environmental groups and councils have increasingly called for the confinement of cats to prevent their predation on birds and other wildlife. Cats do impact on wildlife, like humans they kill to eat, but there has been a great deal of misinformation and propaganda about the true harm they do. This debate has become so heated at times, fueled by a minority of vocal cat haters who often have the ear of government, that people have lost sight of the fact that it is humans themselves who are the real culprits. Massive, ongoing and largely irreversible damage to the environment by human activity is the main reason for the loss of wildlife, the impact of cats being infinitesimal in comparison. In fact if given a choice, cats mainly prey on pest species such as rodents and rabbits as they have done for millennia, with the full endorsement of humans. It’s almost as though history is repeating itself. Cats through the ages have been cruelly persecuted and almost wiped out at times for various reasons, most notably during the Middle Ages when they became all but extinct in Europe due to suspicion and fear that they were witches in disguise. The result was that rats were able to proliferate and bubonic plague or Black Death, which is carried by the rat flea, killed one third of the known human population. It is worth noting that the plague bacillus is still with us today, still present in many countries including Australia. Rodents also transmit other diseases that are potentially devastating to humans, including hanta virus, which makes cyclic reappearances in various parts of the world whenever carrier rodent numbers build up.

Sustainable Animal Production - Visions for the 21th century Welcome to our Website
Sustainable animal production is a system which preserves the basis of life of future generations. The foundations, conditions and perspectives for animal production are exceedingly variable in different parts of the world. This project focusses on the future supply and quality of food for humans and animals, animal welfare and health, the effects of animal production on the environment, the influences of new technologies, future animal production sites and global trade. These pages contain the Conference Sustainable Animal Production , the documentation of a multidisciplinary project to develop a global vision for the future of the production of food of animal origin. This site is also intended as a forum to continue the dialogue begun in the virtual conference and workshop series "Sustainable Animal Production". The project was realized by a consortium of scientists from four research institutions in northern Germany and includes a virtual conference launched in October, 1999, and followed by a series of
