Nutreco,
Boxmeer, The Netherlands 1 INTRODUCTION Consumers show a growing interest in the quality of agricultural products and the manner of production and distribution, including issues such as animal welfare, food safety and environmental pollution. Demands of this type refer to a large extent to the upstream farm stages of the so-called supply chain, requiring that those consumer preferences be incorporated in all stages involved. To anticipate this development, the potential structural and economic effects on the stages of the supply chain should be explored. Regarding product development policies, trade-offs have to be made between preferences and profitability. This paper elaborates on animal welfare in the pork chain, including the evaluation of its perception and economics. To evaluate the economic impact of the pig welfare concerns, an economic pork chain simulation model was developed. The model includes a farrowing stage producing feeder pigs, a fattening stage producing fattened pigs, and a slaughtering stage. Also transportation between the stages was considered. Pig welfare evaluations and economic calculations, therefore, concerned sows, young piglets and pigs during the growing to finishing phase, during transportation and in the lairage room prior to slaughter. In using the pork chain model instead of models simulating the separate stages of the chain, interstage relations could also be taken into account.

Humane On-Farm Husbandry Criteria for Pigs
General Husbandry Housing for animals shall be designed to allow the animal to behave naturally. Housing shall be sufficiently spacious to allow all animals to lie down in full lateral recumbency at one time and to move freely. Pigs are active, social animals by nature, and close confinement in crates is prohibited unless briefly required for vaccination, feeding, marking or veterinary procedures or in the rare event that a sow may savagely attack her piglets, and then only temporarily until the sow is calm. Pigs shall have continuous access to pens bedded with straw or chopped corn stover, or pasture or dirt yards in which they can root, explore, play or build nests. Substitutes for straw and corn stover may be used only with the approval of the Animal Welfare Institute. Straw is the preferred bedding for farrowing sows and their nursing piglets. Even when bedding is not needed for warmth, straw or other approved material shall be provided to hogs that do not have continuous access to pasture or dirt. The bedding shall be provided in quantities sufficient to give the hogs material in which to play, explore and root.

By Professor Paul H. Hemsworth September 2003 RIRDC Web Publication No W03/114 RIRDC Project No DAV-159A
Foreword The joint Animal Welfare Centre was established on the 24th March 1997 by the University of Melbourne, Monash University and the Department of Natural Resources and Environment. The Centre focuses and coordinates the research and academic resources of the three collaborating organisations, providing the farming community with an internationally competitive research, teaching and training resource in animal welfare. In 1997 a 5-year plan was developed for the Centre’s research, training and teaching activities and this plan consists of key programmes and their goals with identified key performance indicators. The plan was developed in consultation with the three partner organisations (through the Centre’s Board of Management), the Centre’s Advisory Committee, clients such as the rural industry research corporations and interested parties such as animal industry bodies and community groups representing the general public’s interest in animal welfare (such as the RSPCA and Animals Australia). The major programs of the Centre are basic research to develop welfare methodology, research examining the effects of human-animal interactions, housing and husbandry practices on animal welfare, the development and provision of undergraduate, postgraduate and industry training programs in animal welfare and the provision of scientific, objective information on animal welfare to the general public.

RSPCA Australia Scholarships for animal welfare research 2004-5 Each year since 1989, RSPCA Australia has offered the RSPCA Australia Alan White Scholarship to fulltime students for the funding of original research aimed at improving the welfare of animals in Australia. In 2004, the RSPCA has expanded its scholarship program and now offers two types of upgraded scholarships, one for research into general animal welfare issues, and another for specific projects aimed at improving the welfare of livestock in intensive production systems.
The RSPCA Australia scholarships are intended to encourage students to take an active interest in animal welfare issues, to support animal welfare research that might not otherwise attract funding, and to promote the objectives of the RSPCA within the research community.
RSPCA Australia Alan White Scholarship for Animal Welfare Research

The RSPCA Australia Alan White Scholarship for Animal Welfare Research was established in 1989 to advance the cause of animal welfare in Australia. The scholarship is named after Mr Alan White, a past President of RSPCA Australia and a past President of RSPCA Queensland. The Alan White Scholarship is available to full-time students in Australian tertiary institutions for the funding of original research aimed at improving the welfare of animals in Australia. The 2004-5 award will be for $7,000 and can be used towards any area of research that fits the general scholarship criteria.

General considerations
21. From our ethical considerations, we concluded that the objections to the use of cloning by nuclear transfer were not such as to rule it out completely if there were sufficiently profound expectable gains and if the costs to the animals involved were light. We therefore went on to consider the circumstances under which this technology may be implemented and the implications for animal welfare. Many of the procedures, for example, the recovery of embryos from superovulated ewes and further laparotomy, are surgical in nature and as such require veterinary input or supervision. Others may involve heavy loss of life, perhaps due to birth abnormalities or longer term effects of the ageing of DNA. We now examine these in detail.

What are the differences between animal welfare, animal ethics and animal rights?
Part 2 – human attitudes and opinions about animals
Carol Petherick, Agency for Food and Fibre Sciences, Beef
Introduction
The first part of this series discussed the term ‘animal welfare’ and how it can be assessed. However, human attitudes to animals will influence animal welfare, as will be explored in this note.
Changing attitudes to animals
The attitudes about the treatment of animals by humans have changed dramatically over the last 400 years. In the 1600s animals were thought to be unfeeling machines that didn’t feel pain or pleasure, and, so, humans could do whatever they wished to them. During the 1700s, debate began about the thinking and feeling capabilities of animals and whether this should affect human treatment of them. By the time the 1800s had come around opinions had begun to change, and the first laws were passed in the UK to prevent wanton acts of cruelty to animals. During the 1900s concern about human treatment of other animals, particularly in the areas of biomedical research and intensive farming, became a major issue for the general community. These changes in attitude have largely come about as a result of our improved knowledge about animals. We now know more of their evolution, anatomy, physiology, behaviour etc., and most people accept that humans evolved from other animals and appreciate that there are many, many similarities between humans and other animals. This has made us compare animals to ourselves and give more consideration to what animals may experience.
