142. Miami Seaquarium - Dolphins, Social And Intelligent Animals
with animals, often in the form of internships or volunteering, is essential forcandidates to understand the demands of animal care and training positions.

Training
How to become an Animal Trainer
Animal Trainer positions are some of the most desirable and sought after positions in animal parks. Due to this popularity, such positions in the marine mammal field, including Miami Seaquarium, are highly competitive. Applicants should have a strong background in science and behavior, along with strong communication and swimming abilities and previous animal experience. A college degree in psychology or a life science is preferable. Courses in animal behavior are recommended, along with public speaking. Animal trainers interact with the public throughout the park in addition to performing in shows, and for this reason, clear speaking skills are a necessity. On top of this educational background, trainers must be in excellent physical condition. As part of the interview process, candidates are required to complete a rigorous swim test. In contrast to popular belief, trainers do more than swim and perform with marine mammals. Previous experience with animals, often in the form of internships or volunteering, is essential for candidates to understand the demands of animal care and training positions. Trainers must maintain a clean and safe environment for their animals at all times. This includes sanitizing environments as needed, up to several times a day, as well as sanitizing food preparation and storage areas after each use. Training positions are labor intensive. Much behind the scenes work goes into producing quality exhibits and shows featuring healthy, well cared for animals.

RESPIRATORY DISEASE AND THE ENDURANCE HORSE
The heart and the cardiovascular system:
Relevance to training and health of the endurance horse
Lesley Young, Centre for Equine Studies, Animal Health Trust, Newmarket Your horse's heart is a pump that supplies all his muscles and organs with oxygen and nutrients and carries away the waste products. It does this under all conditions: when he is galloping after hounds, or when he's asleep. To do this efficiently, the heart is divided into two sides: the left side takes oxygenated blood from the lungs and supplies muscles and vital organs, like the brain and kidney. The de-oxygenated blood then returns to the right heart to be pumped to the lungs, where it is replenished with oxygen. Each side has a muscular pumping chamber, the ventricle, and a collecting chamber, the atrium. With each beat, a typical adult horse pumps approximately one litre of blood out of each side of his heart, this is the stroke volume. With a resting heart rate of 30 - 40 beats per minute, this means the total blood pumped in one minute, the horse's cardiac output, is 30 - 40 litres per minute. Contrast this to man with an average output of 5 litres per minute and we can begin to see why the horse is a much better athlete. How does the heart supply the body under the stresses of exercise The heart is an "intelligent" pump, but has a fairly limited range of options to increase its output to meet the increasing demands of exercise.

T he Center for the Integrative Study of Animal Behavior receives many queries from individuals asking for information about potential careers in the field of animal behavior and about the type of training required. While we do not have the personnel necessary to answer each individual query, we hope you'll find the information offered here a useful starting place. The text below was written by the Education Committee of the Animal Behavior Society . Links to additional resources compiled by CISAB are located at the bottom of the page.
WHAT IS ANIMAL BEHAVIOR?
A nimal behavior is the scientific study of everything animals do, whether the animals are single-celled organisms, insects, birds, mammals, fish, or humans. However, human behavior is more often studied by psychologists, anthropologists, human ethologists, or other social scientists.
T he field of animal behavior is concerned with understanding the causes, functions, development, and evolution of behavior. The causes of behavior include all of the stimuli that affect behavior, whether external (food or predators) or internal (hormones or nervous system changes). The function of behavior include both the immediate effects of behavior on an animal (such as attracting a mate), and the adaptive significance of the behavior in a particular environment (such as huddling together in cold weather). The development of behavior is concerned with the ways in which behavior changes over the lifetime of an animal. The evolution of behavior is concerned with origins of behavior patterns and how these change over generations of animals.
