Do you need help in any of these areas?
  • Behavioral problems Hand-raising babies Breeding Diet Nail and feather clipping Biting Screaming Feather picking Training Socializaton The right bird for you? Aggression Potty training
Because so many people now have parrots as pets, Bobbi has dedicated herself to helping people understand their companion parrots, and to helping each bird adapt to its environment. Proper care ensures that each bird is as healthy and happy as possible.
Whether you are raising a new baby or have an adult with a behavioral problem, she is here to help you every step of the way.
Bobbi can also show you how to train your birds to do tricks that will amaze you and your friends. Training helps the birds by giving them an opportunity to interact with their owners and use their natural habits and intelligence to prevent boredom. Biting and screaming are the two most common problems that Bobbi gets calls about. Before you come to your wits end, let Bobbi help you solve this problem in one easy session! Feather plucking is probably one of the most frustrating problems that bird owners and veterinarian’s deal with. After years of working with birds that have this problem and worse, such as mutilation, Bobbi has discovered a remarkable method in making these animals

Training The RSPCA commenced dog obedience classes in Queensland in 1986 with 69 students and their dogs completing the course that year. To date, over 20,000 students have completed courses with the RSPCA Animal Training and Behavioural Centre, now a nationally registered training organization. Highly trained staff continue to develop a range of obedience, agility and fun programs for all ages and levels of experience. In recent years, additional animal training centres have been established throughout Queensland, training an average of 3,500 students each year from “K9 kindergarten” to advanced training. Besides providing training facilities to encourage responsible dog ownership, the centres are involved in many education and community events including Million Paws Walks, World Animal Day, Open Days and the Australian Veterinary Association’s PetPEP program. Dogs and owners feature in “prevent-a-bite” demonstrations, “flyball” and agility courses. Dogs from the animal training program and their owners are always welcome visitors at nursing homes as part of a pet therapy program and also at child care centres. Special programs introduced by the Animal Training Centre include - special training classes for cruelty case dogs to enrich the life of these dogs; home training for dogs and students unable to attend a centre, and special intensive school holiday dog obedience courses for school students and their canine friends. The Society also provides hydrobath services for the public at several of the animal training centres throughout the State.

I n Entertaining Parrots , you observed that a parrot could distinguish between several different colors and vocalize the name associated with a specific color. But isn't it common knowledge that animals other than humans are colorblind? Is this parrot special or can other animals also distinguish between colors? Since you can't ask an animal if it detects colors, you'll need to acquire this knowledge in another way. A well-designed set of experiments might answer the question "Can my pet distinguish colors?"

THP TO INSTITUTE ANIMAL TRAINING FOR ALL OFFICERS
Nashville (January 23, 2003) As part of an aggressive effort to address the increasing challenges faced by law enforcement officers, the Tennessee Highway Patrol will develop a new training program that will teach all Troopers and Communication Officers how to deal with situations involving animals. Tennessee Department of Safety Commissioner Fred Phillips made the announcement in the wake of the January 1, 2003 incident involving the Smoak family of North Carolina, whose dog was shot and killed by a Cookeville Police Officer who was assisting the THP with a traffic stop. “We plan to institute a block of training on dealing with animals, particularly canines,” said Phillips. “This training will not only be for uniformed officers, but also for dispatchers who send those officers out to potentially dangerous scenes. We want to put an emphasis on fact-gathering by Communication Officers, and stress the importance of getting accurate information out to our Troopers in the field.” The THP will seek the assistance of animal organizations whose representatives have contacted the Department of Safety to offer their assistance in developing training curriculum. The THP currently has no specific policy on situations involving animals. A survey found that of the eight states surrounding Tennessee, only one state, Missouri, has such a policy.

CATS! WILD TO MILD
Karen Thomas is a studio animal trainer who trains animals for the film industry. She works with insects, reptiles, dogs, cats, farm animals... At what age did you choose your career? I started working as a trainer after college at twenty-one years of age. I have wanted to work with animals for as long as I can remember, but I never thought I would train animals I wanted to be a vet or a zookeeper. Was there a specific event or person associated with that decision? Not really during college I realized that I didn't want to be a vet. I leaned toward zookeeping, but the lack of good-paying zookeeping positions made me look at other options. That's when I looked into studio animal training. What has been the greatest experience of your career? My greatest experiences are when I rescue an animal from a shelter and give it a "star" lifestyle. Also, educating people about animal care and husbandry especially children. What specialized skills do you need for the job? You need to be passionate about animals and have a natural way with them. Having a college degree helps, but without the love and dedication, the degree means nothing. And lots of patience!
