Learning Theory and Learning Theory Classical Conditioning Operant Conditioning Four possible consequences of a behavior ... Who's Using Clicker Training Learning Theory and Learning Theory "Learning Theory" is a discipline of psychology that attempts to explain how an organism learns. It consists of many different theories of learning, including instincts, social facilitation, observation, formal teaching, memory, mimicry, and classical and operant conditioning. It is these last two that are of most interest to animal trainers. Why should animal trainers be bothered with learning the theory behind how their animals learn? Many excellent trainers have no formal schooling or organized understanding of how their training is effective or how their charges work. But training is both an art and a science. More and more trainers - pet owners, show competitors, horseback riders, show-business trainers, zookeepers, aquarium trainers and more - are finding that an understanding of learning theory helps them understand their animals' behaviors better, and plan their training accordingly. So trainers are learning the theory of learning theory!

http://www.seaworld.org/infobooks/Training/atintrobehav.html
Introduction to Animal Behavior
What is "behavior"? Behavior is the way an animal acts. Anything an animal does involving action and response to stimulation is a behavior. Walking, blinking, swimming, breathing, and eating are all examples of behavior. Animals behave in certain ways for three basic reasons: 1) to find food, 2) to avoid predators, and 3) to reproduce. The study of animal behavior is known as ethology. What is learned behavior? Animals acquire learned behavior through experience. In fact, scientists define learning as a relatively permanent change in behavior as a result of experience. Learning occurs gradually and in steps. A few thing to remember about animal behavior. When we study animal behavior, we may mistakenly attribute human characteristics or motivations to animals. Attributing human characteristics to animals is called anthropomorphizing. Beware of these inaccurate assumptions when you observe animal behavior! The study of animal behavior can extend from simple to very complex. For more in-depth information on operant behavior, classical conditioning, reinforces, and natural behavior of marine mammals, please see the bibliography

Exotic Animal Training and Management, Moorpark College
Have you always had a strong desire to care for animals? Have you been intrigued by the amazing performance of dolphins and killer whales in oceanariums? Do you want to help save wild animals from the threat of extinction? Do you want to teach others to love animals as much as you do? We can help you turn your dreams into reality. The Exotic Animal Training and Management (EATM) Program at Moorpark College is an unique vocational program offering education in the care and training of animals and the presentation of educational shows utilizing animals. Students receive instruction in modern techniques of zoo keeping including nutrition, restraint, and veterinary procedures. A variety of animal training procedures are presented, ranging from techniques applicable for confined zoo animals to methods used in working animals in the movie industry. The human elements of the animal industry are also covered in courses dealing with public relations, fund raising, planning, and supervision. At the college's animal facility, the students are able to put into action practices they have learned in the classroom. The EATM Program was established as a major at Moorpark College in 1974. The animal collection has gradually increased over the years as animals were acquired through donations and breeding loans from major zoos and research centers. This extraordinary collection has included exotic animals ranging from marmosets to an Asian elephant, blue-tongued skinks to alligators, button quail to ostrich.

New Age Animal Training
Innovation Or Marketing Strategy?
by Diana Guerrero
Recently being promoted has been a different way of approaching our training animal friends both in the domestic and exotic animal realm. Unfortunately, it is not a new approach at all and although what is being taught is a useful tool, it does not treat our animal friends with a holistic attitude nor does it use some of the vital skills and information about those animals as individuals or as a species or breed that have been gathered over the last hundred or so years. The "Click and Reward" method or the "Operant Conditioning" methods currently being promoted are useful. Probably their best use is that they can teach even the most unskilled owner or client how to begin to work with an animal successfully. Unfortunately, the nuances or trust bond of that training still remains elusive to most people. "Operant Conditioning", is a form of training that relies on food reward. Behavior is shaped slowly and systematically. Ideally food reward is immediately reduced resulting in higher response and criteria of behavior. So, an animal originally rewarded for a "Sit" is given different parameters surrounding the "Sit". For instance, now it will be the fastest, or the straightest, and perhaps a longer "Sit" with more distance from the trainer. The general public is probably familiar with this method as used with marine mammals in oceanariums. In the 1950's Marineland of the Pacific did shows and other work with those types of animals using operant training. Reading Lads before the Wind, or Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor has given many people the idea to use "Operant Conditioning" as a tool. In domestic animal work this has been called the "Click and Reward" method of dog training. However with the various breed specific traits and personalities of different dogs it should not be used exclusively. If an owner has a dog who is non-responsive in a high stress situation or who has no food drive they will need assistance in other avenues of approaching their problems.
